mn9 Posted May 30, 2008 Posted May 30, 2008 Hey All, I watched last nite American Gangstar on my Full HD Bravia via PS3 upscale and was so dissapointed with every scene plagued with smearing. I cant understand why this happens on some movies and not others, even Blu ray this can happen i.e Saw4. What is the point of paying so much money for this TV? The old rear proj tv never did this, the only really good quality movie I have seen on the Bravia was Apocolypto on BD. Does anyone know how to fix this smearing or why it happens on some movies and not others? Cheers Michael

wallywonka Posted May 30, 2008 Posted May 30, 2008 Turn off the all the enhancements if you haven't already, especially noise reduction.
hipnhop Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 Turn off the all the enhancements if you haven't already, especially noise reduction. The noise reduction is suppose to make the image clear why would u turn it off??

I think it could be the way they have been made, not sure. Haven't noticed it with any other movies though on dvd or BD. One setting to check, in your PS3 settings what do you have the BD 24hz output set at???? I noticed when I had it set to Auto the smearing was pretty bad so I tried turning it off, I noticed a huge improvement. I then switched it to "On" and it was still ok. I also turned off all enhancements in the tv's settings. Give this a go and see what you think.
Autocrat Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 The noise reduction is suppose to make the image clear why would u turn it off?? Because the smearing probably isn't caused by a noisy source, it's a "feature" of LCD technology. Its vaguely possible that the NR settings are accentuating the smear.

mn9 Posted June 3, 2008 Author Posted June 3, 2008 Thanks to All, I will play with the settings and see what I can do, I watched I am Legend, was perfect but I have noticed when there is any scenes with low light there is smearing no matter what the movie.
shano23 Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 Have you tried calibrating it correctly? Calibration can make a huge improvement
mantronic Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 I had this on my x series .. it almost looked a picture made of slow moving liquid. Funny that ;-). You stared dreading when it would rear its ugly head again. About 2 mins with a plasma you forget about motion blur. Havig said that every so often you get the false leading edge which isnt great, and the phosphor trails on some content that Im starting to think could very quickly induce epliepsy. I was even lucky enough to see some rainbows on top gear last night. The LCD probs are far more obvious but the plasma ones are more disturbing and headache inducing for me. You cant win with flat panels ... just learn to live with it.
mn9 Posted June 3, 2008 Author Posted June 3, 2008 Well, I went to JB the other day and saw all the panels together, they were all playing planet earth at Full HD and Sony was the best, even better then Pioneer Full HD. Sony was so much brighter then all and its blacks where on par with Pioneer. Its HD was also one of the best.

PositivelyMusicallyGeared Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 Buy a plasma? Buy a HD second-hand CRT. Or anything with a smaller screen. -J

You've already crossed the 5-post barrier, your PM is enabled and so is the ability to start a new thread. There's no need to continue spamming. Edited June 3, 2008 by kulfi
mantronic Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 (edited) Another great moment in porcine aviation. Ha ha. He is right that is brighter though. It also get pretty black, after it does is not too subtle backlight dimming, as long as you dont mind everything from lightgrey to black being the same black ha ha. Edited June 3, 2008 by mantronic

That's certainly better than everything from lightgrey to black being the same lightgrey. No doubt it's brighter, but then I don't live in a solarium so it makes little difference.
Sabor Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 Did I miss something? Why is everyone having a go at mn9? Strange.
Autocrat Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 I'm not really having a go. It's just that (this year at least) the only way to get the black levels on an LCD comparable to the 1080p Pioneer is to pull the plug on the LCD. But then contrast tends to suffer.
mn9 Posted June 3, 2008 Author Posted June 3, 2008 Black level compared side by side was minimal but the brightness compared side by side was huge, Pioneer looked shadowed. I would though take Pioneers reliable quality anyday.

I don't think this is the case. Maybe with a CRT or the new Kuro models.
