From engadget: Link

The first Blu-ray recording has been released. Fans of anything other than Divertimento, hold your horses:

The first release is from Thondheimsolistene, an orchestra from Norway. "Divertimenti", as it is called, will be released

by the 2L label in full HD audio glory along with a SACD track for those not on the Blu-ray bandwagon just yet.

Formats include 2.0 LPCM, 5.1 LPCM, 5.1 DTS HD Master Audio, 5.1 Dolby True HD, 5.1 Dolby Digital at 48KHz,

and it has been confirmed to work just fine on the PS3

I hope this is the first of many..

cheers :D

I hope they release more HD audio that ISNT classical or jazz...

Unfortunately as there is no 'marketing machine' behind this very enticing possibility of HD media I think it's niche only at this stage.

maybe I'm confused, but aren't there dozens of BD music titles which have High Definition audio available already?

Sadly, I think I'll have to agree with you Rod.. :(

DVD-Audio hasn't set the world on fire either.

SACD and DVD-Audio are about 2% of total music sales. (2007)

Cheers...

Fascinating Kjay; wonder why they think 24/192 is necessary when 24/96 is better than human hearing anyway  Doesnt look good for a universal bluray player ..

Who knows... It's probably more about quality than quantity..

However it would be interesing for someone with a keen ear and a really slick system to have a listen and

report back on the various formats... (Al, are you listening? )

Cheers. :)

Kjay, sorry I overlooked this thread when I posted elsewhere.

Even though I'm not a great fan of the classical genre, I also thought this would be a good disc to compare the new HD audio codecs.

The set also includes a hybrid-CD (SA-CD).

Lindberg Lyd:

We have implemented as many encodings as we can possibly fit into this BD50 (dual layer) with the purpose of getting your help to evaluate the quality, and to choose which one to use in future releases. Normally a BD25 with only selected encodings would be sufficient for a Blu-ray containing music only.

According to Wiki, there is suppose to be a —Profile 3 — BD-Audio specification eventually developed. If thats true, I hope it incorporates DSD technology (SA-CD).

I gather it has something to do with "headroom"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Headroom

Apparently, SACD is equivalent to 20 bit/192khz resolution although I have read the PS3 outputs the DST signal at 24 bit/176 khz PCM

. . . .Whether DSD proves sonically superior to 20-bit/192-KHz PCM remains to be seen. . . .

I have 7 SACDs from 2L and they are fantastic recordings especially the ones that use the DXD recording process at 4 times the data rate of SACD, this release was recorded using DXD.

I would think 2 and 5.1 24/192 LPC and 48khz DD should keep most people happy without the need for DTS MA and Dolby Tru HD, plus an SACD of course.

Good point azure ; nothing worse than insufficient headroom compromising the dynamic range of a recording.Hopefully the hard filters that sacd uses to push quantisation noise out of band wont be needed?
