Cars and Knight Rider on Seven

Bad Boys II on Nine

nine here in Sydney always displays as 5.1 on my amplifier, even if the program isn't a true 5.1 program. Now you just have work out for yourself if the program truely is 5.1 or just faked.

I'm only geting Dolby Prologic for Pirates on Ch7 in Brisbane.

Do I have to set anything on Sony Bravia X to get 5.1. I'm using an optical cable to a Onkyo 605.

Any confirmed 5.1 in Brisbane?

you might have the bravia set to output everything as 2ch PCM and your AVR set to perform Dolby Prologic, to get 5.1, you need to output compressed signal.

That Most Likely isn't the problem as HD Channels only have DD Audio (except SBS HD which only has MPEG Audio) and 5.1 is only available on the HD Channels (except ABC where it can be received on SD as well). The Problem is most likely what I said above, i.e. the output format, he most likely has it set to 2ch PCM instead of Compressed (some models say Dolby Digital)

Dyllip,

Thanks for that.

Changed the setting on the Bravia X.

My Onkyo 605 is now showing "16 Blocks" as Dolby D 5.1

The guys at Sony Central were no help.

Once Foxtel goes to 5.1 I'll be a happy camper.

Yep it was 5.1, but for one "session" (between adds) only the surround channels could be heard! no centre. I thought it was some wierd arty directing at first, changed settings to mpeg and there was the dialogue! Fixed itself after the next add break

The bus scene, where it was just the background sound but no dialogue. Check out the sound through Foxtel HD, and it was the same. No center channel. I thought it was jusy how it was meant to be.

I don't know if I need to recalibrate the reciever, but some of the DD5.1 sound like was inside a barrel, a bit of echo.

Nine appears to have stopped upmixing their multicast programs :) (at least here in Adelaide)...or someone forget to press the button tonight.

(kind of ) glad to hear I'm not the only one with no centre channel on 16 Blocks (9HD) - just watched the recording tonight and thought there was a fault with my PVR. I had a similar problem about a week ago - cant remember the show now but it sounded to me like the sound channels were in the wrong order - ie left front coming out of left rear and centre coming out of left front etc. Wish the broadcasters would get their acts together - it like living in a 3rd world country.

Quick heads up for the 20/20 cricket on 9hd ;5.1 with a very nice splash screen announcing 5.1 and the commentator actually mentioning it :)

edit ; NBN just switched to 2.0 :angry2:

I havent read back through this thread, but was watching NCIS tonight on 10HD and flicked on the AVR to see if it was in Dolby 5.1.

On the AVR it showed that it was Dolby Pro Logic (although the "digital" label was lit up as well) with the Left and Right channels active and also a "Surround Mono" channel which I havent seen before.

When the broadcast went to the adverts the AVR display changed to standard 2 channel stereo broadcast then back to Pro Logic when the program resumed. I noticed it doing this during CSI: Miami last night as well. Thought I had messed up an audio setting in the TV or AVR, but then Rush comes on 10HD and boom, full Digital 5.1, so it's not my AVR or TV.

Question is, what is going on with the audio broadcast, why the pseudo Dolby Digital, is this normal for programming and why the difference between the program content and the adverts?

cheers

TB

edit: ok, so I got off by slack assss and read back through the thread. Is what I'm saying above considered to be this "fake" 5.1 or something different, as it's not showing up as 5.1 just 2 dot something (surround mono)....

Hi tb; csi miami is pro logic encoded dolby digital 2.0 ; the flag sent with the dd2.0 activates a dsp that extracts a matrixed mono surround channel in your avr . Quite normal. Fake dd5.1 is different and is a phase trick to make you think your getting real discrete channel 5.1 lossy when its a poor substitute. <_<

The adds are just plain dd2.0 ;no prologic encoding . I dont get 5.1 shows on sc ten but a good indication would be a proper lfe output from your sub and more discrete sounds than ncis or csi :)

interestingly I noticed that when watching Rush in 5.1, the adverts were in Pro Logic, but when watching NCIS in Pro Logic, the adverts were in Stereo. Each took one step down a peg as it were.

Does 5.1 audio come through on AC3 capable tv capture cards?

Hi evildmt,

I can answer this question for you because I'm a bit of a Windows XP/Vista media center fan, I'm not sure if this discussion is appropriate for this topic but you've probably hit a few keywords there that'll show up on google.

Yes on most digital TV cards the DD5.1 will come through (be aware the the only channels outputting in DD5.1 are the High Def digital channels so your tv card must support digital HD). The issue is getting it to play back, you will need either a HDMI port capable of carying audio from your computer or a toslink or other SPDIF digital audio interface to get to your amp, DD5.1 will not run down your normal stereo line out most people use off their computer.

The other way of doing it is to buy an xbox 360 and use the media center extender function built in to that to watch your live and recorded TV shows coming from your computer on your TV and amp. The xbox360 will deliver DD5.1 via it's toslink port no problems. I think you can buy an xbox360 for $379 at the moment which is not bad considering a decent sound blaster card that will do the same will set you back around $100.

Anyway I hope that explains it, it's not the audio coming in to your computer that's a concern it's getting it back out that's the problem.

Cheers avatar76, im encoding it to x264 for watching it later on. so the toslink issue shouldn't be an issue.. i have optical on my pc and thats how im watching it. since im just grabbing the .ts streams i should get them anyway hey.
