My friend was offered to choose between an LG 42PG20D and a Pana TH42PX8A

for the same price $1350. She does not know which one is the best, neither do I.

Their specs look very close to each other. The LG has 25000:1 contrast ratio, however,

it does not say dynamic or native ratio. Please help my friend to make decision. Thank

very much in advance

I will help you.

Go to the store. Stare at both for 15 minutes. Buy the one that suits them.

Seriously, buying a TV is very subjective and a decision cannot be made for you based on specs.

I have learnt a lot this week!

My brother has had a 42 LG plasma for 2 years and I really enjot watching it. I myself have just purchased the 50PG20D and am receiving it tomorrow. I'd say pay a couple hundred extra and go for the 50" LG.

I previously had a 42" samsung plasma and wouldn't recommend it as it used to fuzz and blur when wtaching sports. The lg has a feature which prevents this from happening which is called 100hz true motion.

Can't really say anything about the pana as don't know any one who has one or the specs but as stated I'd suggest go to the store and see which one you like most.

One thing I've learnt from my previous samsung purchase is that looks can be deceiving.

seriously, if you can't tell the difference between an LG 42PG20D and a Panasonic TH42PX8A the FIRST thing you should do is go to an optometrist and get your eyesight tested.

Panasonic is streaks ahead.

Says who? The magazines? They rated the LG very highly.

I looked at both and thought the LG was better. I even sat by a Pioneer and thought it was better in some aspects (dark shadow detail) althouth the Pioneer was definitely blacker.

I personally like the Full HD Pio. As a result, I never look at the HD LG or Pany.

Further more, you can not compare panel by panel at the shop any way, since they may have

different signal feeds and the setting may be different depending on which panel the

shop owner want to get risk 1st. The question is for my friend, and I 'd like an unbias

answer, why Pany is better than LG or vice versa, and in which aspect, eg constrast, color,

detail, after service, etc...

Have you owned a LG that you are so certain whether they are good or bad?

I know of people who have owned LG's for years and have had no problems. Their only track record happened from the old rear projection tvs which are no longer in production and ceased long ago.

They sold the most units and naturally might seem like have more problems.

LG are garbage.

They may look ok, but they have a dismal track record for reliability.

A sweeping statement ;)

That being said I've always been partial to Pana gear having owned many items in the past & present.

Ask any tech who repairs any LG appliance how they compare to other brands.

Sure, there are some who have had a good run out of an LG purchase, but the odds are there are a far greater number who haven't.

LG is built to a price, not to a high-quality standard.

Just my opinion.... people can choose what they want. :)

I've had 3 replaced in 2 years (have a pioneer now) next door neighbour is on his second, sons 4th grade teacher is on his second............ shall I go on?

See comment above re ask a repairer.

Do yourself a favour, tell him to buy the Panasonic!!!!!!!!!!!!

it's interesting that Panasonic is considered the more reputable brand. Over in the Projection Display world, Panasonic quality and after-sales service is generally regarded as appalling.

I'm interested in a 50" HD (not Full-HD) plasma and was looking at the Panasonic & LG latest models. As far as specs go, the LG looks to be better with 100Hz and 14 bit colour processing. In the store, the LG looked better than current model Samsungs and Panasonic 70 series and pretty close to the much vaunted Pioneer. I'd buy a 5 year in home warranty warranty with either, so for me it would come down to which one looks the best of similarly priced models.

Thank you very much guys for all your inputs. I 'll pass this link to my friend. Let she read and

make her own decision. She properly screams when she know that the LG is ticketed at $1199.

After reading quite a few posts about the new LG 42" and 50" plasma range, I was in two minds as to whether I actually should purchase the LG.

Today, I took the time to head down to JB and take a look at these two plasma's.

Fortunately for me the 42" 60U and the 42 80A were displayed side by side with the same movie playback.

The 80A blew me away with its richness of colour, clarity and the gloss black finish of the cabinet.

I posted this the other day ... the basic 8 series are best panels out right now IMO ... they smoke the PIO 42 inch and 7 series pana ... especially on basic high def tv feed.

The 8 is incredibly detailed and lifelike ... and bright as you want ... easily 100% better than the xbr.

Just when I thought I was out, you lot drag me back in... (to the Panasonic range that is!)

Only downside for me is the lack of swivel stand and it's the same price as the 60U whereas I can buy the 50" 50PG20D for $1,799...

Perhaps Olympic specials will bring it down?

Swivel stands is only 1 support and are inherently unstable ... they are only suited to 40 inch or less. Id rather a wide base or double support.

Ive got a small TV unit on wheels that can give me swivel but its not a big plus.

Can't agree with this. TVs are getting lighter and the stand itself weighs around 5kg, so it should be strong enough to support the weight.

As an example, the previous generation 50" plasmas weighed 60 kg but the new ones weigh around 40 kg. Current 46" LCDs weigh around 30 kg and 52" LCDs weigh around 33kg. This isn't that much and if someone can wall-mount them, why can't the company's stand take the weight ?

Agree swivels easily take weight, but at 46 inches if you touch the buttons on tv or bump it can wobble for a while. Would be a little more nervous about knocking over esp by kids but not a deal breaker..
