franin Posted May 27, 2008 Posted May 27, 2008 I had friends the other day from Canberra which we haven't seen for awhile and they basically came over to see us and we showed them the house. We showed them the HT room and he was thouroughly impressed. But.. He then went on about how I should have cinema look where I should have chairs behind me on a carpeted box and so on.My theatre room is really just for me and my family we don't need that many seats to cater for people as we really don't invite people over for a movie night so they will be empty.I understand if you have a good size family but we don't.If people come over we more tend to sit back have a drink or two and chat.Personally Im happy with my room and I dont care for empty seats behind me. So what would you classify a proper HT room?
Volunteer Kazz Posted May 27, 2008 Volunteer Posted May 27, 2008 So what would you classify a proper HT room? I don't know that there is any such thing as a "proper HT room". We all have different wants and needs and a HT room is what we make of it. Even if someone has their HT room set up like a mini theatre there will be others out there who don't like. I say we should be happy with out HT setups if they give us pleasure and meet our needs and what others think is irrelevant. And bloody hell Franin there's nothing wrong with your setup.
stahc Posted May 27, 2008 Posted May 27, 2008 a screen i'm happy with...................sound gear i can cope with until the powerball cheque arrives...................some comfy seats...............our fireplace for winter.....................my bar & bar fridge really i think what makes it a proper room is that you're happy with it
drsmith Posted May 27, 2008 Posted May 27, 2008 A room in which you have at least some control over the amount of light entering the room.
Austen Posted May 27, 2008 Posted May 27, 2008 ........until the powerball cheque arrives....................... i think what makes it a proper room is that you're happy with it Ding !! We have a winner !! In my travels I've seen some rooms that I'd consider awesome, some that...well....But the one thing they all had in common was an owner who was happy with them !!! I'm the first to admit that from a "technical" point-of-view, my setup doesn't even get to enter the "proper HT room" competition, but turn the lights out, put a good movie on, snuggle up with Mrs A on the couch and life's great :) !!! If you're happy with it, it's a great setup !!! Austen.
Guest Posted May 27, 2008 Posted May 27, 2008 You guys are right in what 'as long as your happy with it' but I guess the general concensus that people would think that a proper HT room consists of row of chairs(mini cinema) which I know will be a waste for me.
stahc Posted May 27, 2008 Posted May 27, 2008 my only regret is that we built the bar before i knew about this home theatre thingy i was was about to stumble into............the bar runs the wrong way in that i cant quite have the seats as far back as i would like..................sounds stupid in a room thats 6.5m by 6.5m but that's whats happened.......there are worse things in life
stahc Posted May 27, 2008 Posted May 27, 2008 But lights off you enjoy it correct? yep....................i only have 4 downlights over the main viewing area.................may not be everyone's cup of tea but i like it dim
stahc Posted May 27, 2008 Posted May 27, 2008 lights off mine is batcave dark.I love it! we put double bifolds on the rumpus (H/T room) last year at last......................had been wanting to do that for years.........really closes it off from the rest of the house & cuts out the glare from the family room during the day
Mr.Bitey Posted May 27, 2008 Posted May 27, 2008 Whatever works for you is what goes for me! Im not fussed with fancy seating.. Feels Ok (seats that is!) - Looks ok (kids **** isnt in there) - sounds ok (speakers actually hooked up) - that'll do! (oh and a heap of snacks and booze helps :!) But wheres the limit?? - a 4:3 CRT and audio going through the Stereo instead of the TV speakers - thats fancy enough for some! Minumum qualification would have to be that the damn thing is in its own 'area'.. Its a 'home theater' - not just a TV in the family meals area... its gotta have some definition of a decated area, if not a room. thats enough ranting So long as your happy with it - who cares if its a tv in the family meals area that you watch your movies on! if thats what works for you and your enjoying the movies then thats all that matters in the end... Cheers, Bitey

Brendon Posted May 27, 2008 Posted May 27, 2008 I would say that a home theatre is not defined by the seating or style but wether you can recreate to a degree your happy with the big screen experience so far as picture and sound goes. as the guys above said so long as your happy who cares . Having said that I feel a front projector or a bloody big flat screen at close range and a 5.1 sound system is really required for theater experience. Brendon

It has it's own corner though! Does that count? I'm happy given my space limitations though......
Mr.Bitey Posted May 27, 2008 Posted May 27, 2008 Does that count? If you've got a roped off area, with red ropes and brass rope-stands.... I guess it could count ;-) Cheers, Bitey

stahc Posted May 27, 2008 Posted May 27, 2008 What about if it's roped off with police tape? then he's watching CSI
Mr.Bitey Posted May 27, 2008 Posted May 27, 2008 well he did show me to my seat with a torch..............how old school is that Ok - well thats seems to fit then! ...... I'd print him a certificate of "Official DTV Endorsed HT", but without a proper HT wall to hang it on, theres no point Cheers, LOLey
digitalj Posted May 27, 2008 Posted May 27, 2008 A HT Room for me would have the following: Full-HD Plasma with Deep Colour (size depends on how far back I intend sitting) Blu-ray Player Blu-ray Library 7.1ch AVR with ability to decode lossless audio formats through HDMI HD-PVR No Windows Air-conditioning (reverse Cycle) Recliner Sound proof so I can have it loud and not disturb others. Very Expensive HT Room
