G'day

Purchased a Sony KDL46W3100 on the weekend and far from happy with the quality of the display. Image is not clear from the tuner, LG dvd player or LG PVR via HDMI through Yamaha RV X1800. I have tried some of the suggested calibrations as per this forum with little or no improvement. The image appears cloudy at the best. Any suggestions or have I bought a lemon?

Clive, sorry to say but I saw that display next to a Sammy 46 inch LCD at GG Morayfield when helping the father in law choose a new tele. Needless to say, he bought the Sammy.

The colour just looked washed out, is that what you mean by cloudy. It definitely shouldn't be ghosting or anything like that.....

G'day Clive,

I think there's something wrong with the TV. The words "LCD" and "cloudy image" don't go together. LCDs have a bright and sharp picture (too much for some people's liking). The Sony is a little less sharp as compared to the Samsung, as jayweb has pointed out but your description sounds like a problem to me.

Please run your DVD on a display set in the shop and if you're not satisfied, exchange it for a Samsung 46" M81. It can be had for a lot less than the Sony 46" W3100 these days, or for around the same price as the W, you'll get the 46" F81 ($2500 is the latest update on its price).

Thanks for the help. I'm intending to go back to the store where I bought it Clive Peeters and hopefully they will do the right thing. Otherwise I guess I'll have to fight with Sony. Oh well I had to send my PS3 back as well. Not having a lot of joy with Sony.

Best of luck Clive, I bought my XE1 through CP Aspley, very good service, they should be fine if you bought it on the weekend.

If you dont have much luck check out Bitey's thread on your rights, seems to be spot on and very helpful.

The PQ of the W shouldn't be any different to that of the X/XBR. You get motionflow & better SQ on the X/XBR and that's about it. Sounds like it could be faulty. I've got the 40W and the PQ is sweet as and it doesn't suffer the symptoms you've described. I would certainly take it back & get them to test it next to one of the display models. The Samsung is the other alternative if you can't talk them down on the price of the Sony X.

How much did pay for the Sammy 46 F at GG Morayfield, they are my local GG and I am looking at either the 40 F or the 46 F sammy LCD.

Are you viewing in a dim or dark room?

For what it's worth, I have the 40" version, and the PQ is pretty good - sharp and clear, both the in built digital tuner and via HDMI (using a PS3 or a PC with a HD-DVD player). Some motion blurring, but I was aware of that when I bought it.

It was a while back and dont quote me but I think 2499, it was on sale then. I must say it was a very impressive panel. Cant remember if it was the F8 or M8, pretty sure it was the M8. The guy who sold it to him was a real AV fan, had a good chat, in fact father in law started to get the dirts because we were talking tech, he was irish cant remember his name tho.....
