BribieG Posted May 25, 2008 Posted May 25, 2008 New lifestyle programme Domestic Blitz on 9 So this week they are doing a makeover of the home of the Irish lady Fenola who is currently in remission from Mesothelioma (remembered her from channel 9 what a coincidence - RPA) Good on you team. However, question: if Fenola and her family were renting I expect 9's response would have been p** off Fenola? Recent reports, in Brisbane at least, is that by next census the number of households renting will be 40 %, increasing eventually to over half of households, with many going onto European type leases of several years at a time. Good grief, after a few good decades Australia is joining the rest of the world that most Germans, French, Swedes etc have lived in for centuries. It strikes me that the media still (Like John Howard) are pitched towards white anglo saxon mum and dad home owners with 2.3 kids living in their own (mortgaged) home. Anyone else (like 50% of the population) is considered to be unAustralian or just irrelevant. Any wonder that FTA is dying. PS we rent, as I have said on other threads I have owned 2 houses and wives got both of them and the Mrs had a nice home that her husband swindled her out of. Too late for us to re-enter the market.
mwd Posted May 25, 2008 Posted May 25, 2008 (edited) I am surprised that Renters are not the majority in Australia. Seeing as the workers in this country tend to be quite transient. I am nearly termed an old timer in Cairns I have been here for 15 years. Everytime we see a Victoria Rego plate " The Place To Be" the comment is Why don't you go back then ? On a practical note. Not much point making over a Rental Property only the Landlord would be smiling as he/she issued the eviction notice. It is not that long ago that Property in Australia was cheap compared to Europe but it caught up quickly. Women usually end up the winners financially in Divorce Settlements unless you are smart and liquidize everything smartish before the hammer drops. Rental wives are also the way to go. When you get fed up just trade in for a newer model. All the pleasure none of the grief. Move to Thailand or Indonesia. Edited May 25, 2008 by mwd
BribieG Posted May 25, 2008 Author Posted May 25, 2008 Everytime we see a Victoria Rego plate " The Place To Be" the comment is Why don't you go back then ? The previous plate used to read "Victoria, On the Move" ... yes, up here! My stepdaughter used to live in Cairns, at Kewarra Beach, and the entire street of brand new 4br houses with pools etc was rentals. On your other point, of course Australian real estate was cheap when people were happy with a 3br, carport and one dunny. Now with McMansions with 3 bathrooms, Home Theatre, 2 roller doors and 5 bedrooms considered entry level by the x and y gen, of course property in Australia is now the most expensive in the world. Whatever happened to Villaworld type estates where you could get a basic duplex or townhouse for $120k, only about 10 years ago.
