Samsung LA40R81BDX 40" LCD

Pros :

its 40 "

Cons :

no 1080i

i read somewhere that it has a 'clicking' sound when turned off in standby mode (TV will be in bedroom so could be an issue)

50Hz

speaker sounds shitty

SONY Bravia KDL32D3100 32" LCD

Pros :

Its a SONY

true HD

great picture - v noice

Resolution 1366 x 768p

very subjective, though since youre asking us to push you one way or another id say sony since ive had the worst experience with sammys with 5 faultys in 1.5wks, and a sammy sales rep whos a smart alec and looks down upon little consumers like us. arrogant.

umm interesting... i wouldn't say sony reps are any better...

but i think with that comparison.. i would only bring it down to 1 thing..

do you need a 40" or a 32" ... and what do you watch on it ? any games you gonna play there?

if its just for regular hd channels ONLY.. then just go for the 40" ..

if you gonna watch your blu-rays and play you games etc... then 32" i say...

Who told you the Samsung doesn't show a 1080 image ? It's going to downscale it from 1920X1080 to 1366X768. 1080i is not a problem, so go for the extra 8" size. It makes a big difference.

About your audio problem, saying that the Samsung's speakers aren't the best, the Sony isn't that massive on sound either. But there is a way out for you to get the 40" Sammy and get good sound -

Logitech X-530 5.1 speakers are available for $70 to $75. They come with an adapter in the box, which allows you to connect the Red-White AV audio output from your TV to the speakers' pink-green-black connector. This means you can get the TV to pump out its stereo sound to the external speakers and get a great output for a low price. I have a similar setup and can confirm it works.

Hey Guys,

I'm new sorry if this is the wrong forum but -

I have a new Samsung LA40R81BDX and wanted to get a cheap 5.1 surround for it, like the one mentioned above (hence my posting here), does anyone have any alternatives for me to look into i've got a budget of about $250-350 and want it to plug straight into the tv for watching films etc and also into my laptop so i can use my new tv as a massive pc for my music / podcasts etc. (my laptop only has the built in speakers, which is no good for this)

Thanks in advance eggs :) x

whats the best price you have seen for the Samsung LA40R81BDX 40" LCD? I am looking at this one too

No more R81. That has been discontinued.

The 40" A450 is the replacement for the R81. I've seen it and it's quite good. Look for a target price around $1200 to $1300.
