reags Posted May 25, 2008 Posted May 25, 2008 very subjective, though since youre asking us to push you one way or another id say sony since ive had the worst experience with sammys with 5 faultys in 1.5wks, and a sammy sales rep whos a smart alec and looks down upon little consumers like us. arrogant.
Rocean Posted May 25, 2008 Posted May 25, 2008 umm interesting... i wouldn't say sony reps are any better... but i think with that comparison.. i would only bring it down to 1 thing.. do you need a 40" or a 32" ... and what do you watch on it ? any games you gonna play there? if its just for regular hd channels ONLY.. then just go for the 40" .. if you gonna watch your blu-rays and play you games etc... then 32" i say...
Deathgod Posted May 25, 2008 Author Posted May 25, 2008 thanks for the replies so far guys .. the TV will be for bedroom and getting another for my guitar/guest room no gaming, i game on my 86cm Sony HD CRT .. Teevs will be for FTA and Foxtel split to them, and the odd DVD umm interesting... i wouldn't say sony reps are any better... but i think with that comparison.. i would only bring it down to 1 thing.. do you need a 40" or a 32" ... and what do you watch on it ? any games you gonna play there? if its just for regular hd channels ONLY.. then just go for the 40" .. if you gonna watch your blu-rays and play you games etc... then 32" i say...
kulfi Posted May 25, 2008 Posted May 25, 2008 Who told you the Samsung doesn't show a 1080 image ? It's going to downscale it from 1920X1080 to 1366X768. 1080i is not a problem, so go for the extra 8" size. It makes a big difference. About your audio problem, saying that the Samsung's speakers aren't the best, the Sony isn't that massive on sound either. But there is a way out for you to get the 40" Sammy and get good sound - Logitech X-530 5.1 speakers are available for $70 to $75. They come with an adapter in the box, which allows you to connect the Red-White AV audio output from your TV to the speakers' pink-green-black connector. This means you can get the TV to pump out its stereo sound to the external speakers and get a great output for a low price. I have a similar setup and can confirm it works.
webbiegareth Posted May 26, 2008 Posted May 26, 2008 (edited) Whoops... ignore this post! I made a wrong assumption. Edited May 26, 2008 by webbiegareth

Hey Guys, I'm new sorry if this is the wrong forum but - I have a new Samsung LA40R81BDX and wanted to get a cheap 5.1 surround for it, like the one mentioned above (hence my posting here), does anyone have any alternatives for me to look into i've got a budget of about $250-350 and want it to plug straight into the tv for watching films etc and also into my laptop so i can use my new tv as a massive pc for my music / podcasts etc. (my laptop only has the built in speakers, which is no good for this) Thanks in advance eggs x
SG24 Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 whats the best price you have seen for the Samsung LA40R81BDX 40" LCD? I am looking at this one too
kulfi Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 whats the best price you have seen for the Samsung LA40R81BDX 40" LCD? I am looking at this one too No more R81. That has been discontinued. The 40" A450 is the replacement for the R81. I've seen it and it's quite good. Look for a target price around $1200 to $1300.
