Is there a cheap power-amp that I could get in Asia? I will be in Malaysia and am contemplating going to Singapore or HK.

I have currently an Onkyo 875 and 4ohm Krix speakers.

What brand(s), and places to get it from?

I was hoping to spend less than $1.5k if it is an awesome deal

Hi Serpeant,

Check out the Buying Abroad thread, lots of ideas there. The regular suspects such as NAD, Rotel etc available. I too am interested in a power amp from Singapore, the thread mentioned ATI power amps. They caught my eye as you can configure them from 2 to 7 channels (I want 3 or 6 channels). The 1800 series seem pretty good value. I couldn't find much info about them, but apparantly they make the Outlaw brand power amps, AND they use better components in their own ATI brand units. Could be worth a look? Not sure how you go bringing one in, they are very heavy!!

Cheers

Andrew

Home theatre is not as developed in Malaysia relative to Australia, the stores tend not to have dedicated listening rooms but if you go mid week they are not that busy and will let you demo gear.

I would recommend the following areas for hifi:

- Amcorp Mall about 20 mins from city centre which has about a dozen stores dedicated to hifi. I have purchased from a store call Acoustique Systems, owner is called Mr Lim and he stocks Marantz and a lot of second hand gear

- Sungei Wang in the city centre, two stores in this mall, CMY which stock Cambridge Audio, Marantz and Audio Line which stocks NAD.

- Centre Circle Audio in TTDI (a wealthy suburb, which everyone will know about) is one of the only stores whcih I know that stock Rotel gear.

Not too familar with 7.1 power amps, in your price range I think NAD and Rotel may be the only gear available. In terms of stereo gear in Malaysia, NAD is about the same price as Aust, Cambridge Audio and Marantz are significantly cheaper. In Malaysia do your research about the price you want to pay, haggle as they don't put price on gear and will inflate starting price for foreigners.

Very easy, you can approach the manufacturer and telling them you are interested in the amp and asked them to provide you with a quote for both the amp and shipping cost to send it to Australia. You can also asked them if they can modified the amp so it can run

from on 240v so you don't need to buy a huge step down trannie. Amp modification to run 240v usually cost around USD50. Shipping cost of something 40kg+ can be very expensive and could well be above USD500 +via courier service such DHL or UPS.

I emailed Outlaw about a year ago about shipping to AUS but they said no go. <_<

ATI do make 220-240V units so they may ship to OZ, not sure if Outlaw make 220V units?? I was going to check ATI amps out in Singapore next time I am there, if you go Serpeant, let us know how you go. This place in the US (HERE) has the 7x 180WRMS 1807 for US$1715, you could use this price as a benchmark.

If you do intend to go to HK as well as Singapore - go there last (save lugging the beast around) and checkout the AV shops in Kowloon - directions available in the other threads it's about 20metres from the subway entrance.

Prices in HK appear to be better than in Singapore.

I bought a 2600 Yammy for about $1100 Aud when rrp in Oz was $2500
