I am thinking to buy a PS3 with MGS4 bundle coming in June. But I was just wondering, how do we actually check if we have the latest version installed in the console?

And say if it's not, how do we actually update it? eg. do we actually need to connect the PS3 to internet? I wonder if this is a difficult process.

if you have a Wireless network connected to broadband modem, then when you turn on the PS3, you go to settings -> update and the PS3 will search the internet for more recnt software and if it finds any will download and install it.

I don't have a wireless network, but I can connect PS3 to my ADSL modem. So what you are saying is, it's better to have your PS3 connected to internet all the time? Or I can just plug it in whenever I wanna play online or when I wanna get a software update? (I will be using the PS3 mainly for Bluray I think)

If you leave the PS3 permanently connected to the net (in your case via LAN cable) then you can choose whether or not you are 'always' signed into the PSN. That is, whether or not you are always online when you turn the PS3 on.

If you only require plugging the cable in when online gaming or updating then that is fine, as far as i know.

Once you get the PS3, plug it in, set up the network and your PSN ID, do the system update, then disconnect the cable, and your done.

Alternatively, im pretty sure you can download the firmware on your PC and install it from a thumbdrive. Check out the PlayStation website for more information regarding that.

Good luck with it. :)

Thanks for the info.

I am not the type that does online gaming much or browse/buy online contents. So I guess my best option is just to hook it up online the very first time I got the console, and then unplug it and just do the occasional software update.

Now can't wait for the MGS4 bundle to be released here.

Yep. First time, and update it to the current software.

If you keep tabs on here and on the Sony website you can monitor whether new updates have been released, (or just periodically plug in the cable and let the PS3 run a 'scan' for updates).

Also note though, that some games require updating/software patches/etc, GT5P is one example, so as i mentioned, it might be a good idea to periodically let it check for itself. :)

I would just use a flash drive to update the firmware on the PS3 if it is a pain to plug the PS3 up to your modem

Why is it a pain?

He said if it is a pain for you. Meaning that you might have to unplug everything and lug it to the other end of the house or whatever....

One thing that comes to mind is the nature of your ADSL modem. Is it a full router modem whereby you plug the PC into it via ethernet, and the username is programmed permanently into the modem? Or is it a modem that you plug into your PC via USB? Also, if it is ethernet, do you have to program your modem with the username and password, or do you enter your username and password into a program on your PC?

If the modem is an ADSL router, then no problems. Just plug the PS3 into its ethernet port and it is on the net. You can then update to your hearts content, and also browse the Playstation Network store to download demos and such.

If the modem is eiher of the other two, then youre out of luck. You would have to rig up internet connection sharing via your PC or some other bodgy solution to get the PS3 online. In this case, then you would need to copy the updates over via a USB storage device.

You also sound as if you are someone who has a limited download quota. Keep in mind that each update is in the order of 150Mb (am I right people? I haven't ever downloaded one manually).......well, definitely over 100Mb. Luckily they only ever come out once every couple of months. Game demos can vary in size from 50Mb to 1500Mb. Individual game updates vary in size too much to comment on.

Haha... should've read it more carefully.

Anyway, it's not a pain, my PC and modem is just next to the TV setup, so all I need to do is just run a cable to it.

I'm not sure what kind of router ADSL I have, it's a LinkSys ADSL2 Gateway with 4 port switch.

I am pretty sure that I can just hook it through ethernet and get it running without having to reconfigure my modem, because that's what I did with the laptop too, all I need to do is just get a LAN cable, hook it up to my laptop, and I can connect to internet.

That is right. All you need to do is connect it to one of the spare ethernet ports of your router and it will be fine

The firmware updates sit at about 128MB.
