since you hear no sound quality difference between an AVR and a power amp, why don't you sell it to someone who can hear the difference and that will give you some money in buying something that will provide better sound quality in your system such as better speakers or other components.

Please read my posts again. I have already explained why .

At the end of the day , there are many ways to audition new equipment and imo it is very easy to get all wrapped up in philosophies to the extent that they cloud your judgment and this applies to both subjective and objective camps.

Testing methodologies have been discussed ad infinitum since electronic sound reproduction began and very very seldom do you see folk jumping camps .

I have never found dbt productive in putting together a music system but if it works for others ,as long a we are all happy with the end result in our search to hear music at it's best in our homes ,then that's fine.

When I read your comments re the avr versus the power amp the 1st thought that crossed my mind was i wondered how efficient your vafs were.Looking them up on vafs website they are 93dB which is quite efficient......I wonder wether this contributed to your results.

I have the VAF DCX G4 allrounf in a 7.1 system. The confirmed sensitivity is 95db. I have certainly noticed the difference by adding the Elecktra to my system.

Heres my experience with the Marantz 8002 running as a pre out to the Elektra Theatron 7 channel.

Have found increased volume compared to when the Marantz handled the speaker amplification.

Have not noticed a difference in the audio signature sound from the Marantz amplyfing compared to the Elektra amplyfing.

Have not noticed any compression in centre channel dialogue as of yet which I have experienced on the Marantz and my older Onkyo.

Running Uncompressed PCM 5.1 is excellent now as the volume can be really cranked to new levels without distortion etc etc.

Overall I give the Elektra Theatron/Marantz 8002 combination 2 thumbs up :).

great to hear adam, particularly given the obvious dissapointment you originally had with jsut using the avr's amps. excellent to hear you explored the option to find it bring the improvement you were looking for and happy with :)

Sorry if this appears to be a stupid question, but would there be a big difference between the 7002 and 8002 if you're only using it to feed the elektra?

If you're not taking advantage of the extra power, then why not just go with the 7002? Or am i missing something?

Cheers

Only thing I can think of is the copper chassis better protecting the guts from interference (or something like that, so the glossy brochure claims).

How revealing the rest of your system would need to be, to expose such interference, is probably the bigger factor.

if you are only gaining 1.2db in loudness from a black box that you think made no improvement in SQ. It may be a wiser decision to sell it and put the money towards a pair of more efficient speakers or something you don't have in your system.

Just an idle question or two:

With the 8002 you can bi-amp the fronts. Is it still a good idea to bi-amp the fronts when using an Electra? What about the centre? (I'm assuming that there is little/no benefit to be gained from running the rears through the Electra.)
