mjh1503561750 Posted May 21, 2008 Posted May 21, 2008 i am looking at either getting a beyonwiz dp-p1 and upgrading to 750gb hdd (about 900 - 1000 bucks i presume with hdd) or spending 1000-1200 on an htpc setup. the pros i see of the beyonwiz option is that its relatively 'plug and play' besides the hdd upgrade; whilst the cons are the gui, ease in transferring files to pc and burning recodings to dvd. the pros of an htpc (using vista wmc) i can see is ease of future upgrades, gui and ease of transferring files and recording dvd i have saved whilst the obvious cons include setting the thing up. what are some opinions on which options to go, how easy are people finding it with the beyoniwz dp-p1 to uprade the hdd, transfer files to pc and record these to dvds.
ajm1503559545 Posted May 22, 2008 Posted May 22, 2008 Sounds a little bit to me like you're wanting someone to talk you into or out of the HTPC idea (?) Am I close? Honestly, you could do your head in trying to decide. Bottom line, which is the most important feature for you? You've listed a bunch of pros and cons but I guess the decision will, ultimately, come down to which machine does what you need? So if there's one feature you absolutely have to have and only one machine can manage it (even if that feature is reliability) then the decision should be easy. If it helps decide, I usually ask people if they are ready to take on a new hobby? If they are then the HTPC route is ideal - you'll have a new interest and a new way to invest time and effort into a project that will give them some great results. If time and effort aren't things you want to invest or you're not real comfortable with troubleshooting PC problems then maybe look at a standalone device.
