I posted in a thread yesterday that I was up to the last mission in GTA4.

I get home to finish it off yesterday and low and behold I've got the dreaded RROD. I've never had this before and the console is about 2 months past it's warranty I think...maybe more.

In any case, I'll probably send it away if I can, and buy a new elite at the same time, that way when the old one comes back I'll have a media center extender in my room. That's just a bonus though...my real question is can I swap the hardrive out of the broken console into the new elite when i get it?

As cool as GTA4 is, It's getting a little stale for me and I doubt I have the motivation to go through the whole thing again.

I've also read somewhere that people are "fixing" the RROD thing themselves temporarily by heating the console which is supposed to warp the mainboards back into shape or something...sounds dodgy to me has anyone had any luck with something like that?

You can swap the drives, but you can also get a transfer cable that will transfer all the stuff from the old HDD to the new one. Does the Elite have the new bigger HDD?

3RROD has a 3 year warrenty, so it should still be covered.

I'm not sure what size drives the Elite has, as long as it will accept the old drive I'll be happy. I'll probably consider the transfer cable when and If I get a working console back from MS.

Thanks for the help guys, I've read about the RROD plenty in the past and just figured I was lucky. Good to know MS are going to cover it though. What a huge cock up the whole thing has been for them.

I think I've read that MS wipe the HDD's when they get them so you will get back an empty one....

Why would you need to go through the whole thing (GTA4) again, you just continue off from where you last saved. you didnt send your hard drive away did you?

My friend had the RRod problem. He just sent the 360 console alone...no cables, power brick, controller or HDD. 3 days later he got the 360 back all working fine.

I wont be sending the HDD with the broken console. The plan is..

1) Remove HDD

2) Send console away

3) Buy elite (depends on Price really)

4) Swap drive

5) finish GTA4

6) If - Receive fixed console then

6a) Swap HDDs back

else

6b) buy a PS3 :)

Microsoft specifically tell you to remove your face plate and hard drive before sending the console in for repair.

So there's no need to worry about starting again, all your data will be safe :)

Hey man, you should be able to just swap the HDD over from one xbox to the other it think, Unless the elite has some kind of different hard drive???

And you dont send your xbox away with the HDD for repair you send the xbox and thats it. it took about 2 weeks and i had mine back and working again.

As far as fixing the RROD yourself, the way some people are doing it (look it up on youtube) they wrap up the xbox in a towel and turn it on and leave it on for a while which over heats it and some how makes it work again? im not to sure what exactly happens.

Damo.

oh okay good plan, i just got confused when you said "As cool as GTA4 is, It's getting a little stale for me and I doubt I have the motivation to go through the whole thing again", i assumed you thought you had to play it all over again.

so that means you're gonna end up with 2 XBox 360's? :o

Yeah I did that when I had my first RROD back in January 2007. It kept my 360 going for a few weeks over the Christmas break, but it didn't always work... and anyway, it certainly isn't a long term solution. SEND IT BACK for repairs! It heats the board up where the GPU sits which temporarily fixes the connections between the GPU and the board... notice I said "temporarily"!

The new fix involves epoxy and a heatsink and I hear that it works fine (mine now has this). My second RROD was about a month ago. Only took a week door to door for the fix which I was very impressed with.

Thanks for the help guys. I'll send it in as people have suggested.

I think I'm supposed to be taking a break from games for a while anyway...made the mistake of trying to install XP service pack 3 on my games PC last night and it's also screwed now. Not my week really.
