Cinetastic Posted May 20, 2008 Posted May 20, 2008 Now the dust has settled, is there any company planning to keep releasing HD-DVDs after their current slates have expired? Or is there any profit in releasing titles to the HD-DVD machines already out there, or are all just going to release on Blu-ray? Is this the quickest death of a format ever in AV land? It is just that I remember that some companies kept releasing things on the 'dead' Sega Saturn or Dreamcast, or like when VCDs are still being released as there is a market for them. I guess one reason not to dual HD release is that the Mastering of titles for Blu-Ray (the extra space) means that it would be too large to fit on a HD-DVD unless that was specifically kept in mind - which I doubt they will now do anymore.
cooyarpjm Posted May 20, 2008 Posted May 20, 2008 (edited) To my knowledge the answer is no. Paramount and Universal Dumped the format like a hot potato the minute Toshiba announce the discontinuation of the format including sending any ready to release prints to landfill (i.e. Bee Movie) the only one that continues to release is warner (in the states anyway) until they finish in a couple of weeks time. I guess 2-3 million customers does not constitute a profitable market these days IMO Toshiba should have sold the technology to a 3rd party like LG and given them a go at it. If they can turn a SH** brand Like Goldstar in to one of the most popular Brands today imagine what they could have done with HD DVD Edited May 20, 2008 by cooyarpjm
the_wonderchild Posted May 20, 2008 Posted May 20, 2008 aren't FilmFour (i think that's their name) still releasing the odd movie or two; or have they too put out all their cards on the table already?
SDL Posted May 20, 2008 Posted May 20, 2008 I'm not sure Wonderchild. I did see they released a few movies and there was talk of some more such as Zulu, but it seems to have gone away. I still would have thought they could get the remastered movie at somewhere like Studio Canal and release limited HD DVD's, but I somehow doubt it will happen now.
ausnew Posted May 20, 2008 Posted May 20, 2008 Is the Kite Runner still being released ? Of course there is Twister as well
