Paranoid666au Posted May 19, 2008 Posted May 19, 2008 (edited) I'm pretty sure it should be fine but would running an 8 to 10 metre cable from the wall socket to the Foxtel box, probably an iQ2, be fine? I want to put the box in a separate room with out having to move the outlet. Of course it would take a miracle for me to take up Fox again. Giving them a ring tomorrow to see if I can sweet talk them. Probably get sweet FA but any ways. Oh and can anyone recommend where I can get a good quality cable? Thanks EDIT: It's for cable not satellite. Edited May 19, 2008 by Paranoid666au
mtv Posted May 19, 2008 Posted May 19, 2008 Shouldn't be a problem. From memory, Foxtel's maximum cable length (assuming it's satellite) is 56 metres from dish to receiver. Remember, for iQ you require two cables and they must be RG6 Quadshield or trishield. DSE and Jaycar sell RG6 Quad, but imo, it's overpriced, so you may want to check around.
Paranoid666au Posted May 19, 2008 Author Posted May 19, 2008 It's for cable not satellite. I put that in the title but I probably should have stipulated that in my post. It should still be fine though?

I missed that. Yes, should still be ok.... someone correct me if I'm wrong... but I think cable iQ only requires one cable (not two, like sat).
Sidor Posted May 19, 2008 Posted May 19, 2008 Oh and can anyone recommend where I can get a good quality cable? Thanks EDIT: It's for cable not satellite. from eBay ... what you need is RG6 tri- or quad shield coax cable fitted with f-connectors on both ends
Paranoid666au Posted May 19, 2008 Author Posted May 19, 2008 (edited) Yea it's one cable on cable. I just had a look and there's still the cable for the Foxtel screwed into the wall. Now that I remember, when I canceld my Foxtel the guy that came around to collect the iQ wasn't interested in the cables. I just handed the box and the iQ through the door. So yea just an RG6 quad-shield with F connectors. Unfortunately I don't like buying stuff of ebay but I'm sure I'll find a cable somewhere. I do have a crimping tool so I might even have a go at making my own cable. Edited May 19, 2008 by Paranoid666au
mtv Posted May 19, 2008 Posted May 19, 2008 As I mentioned, Jaycar & DSE sell RG6 Quadshield for around $2.25 per metre. SatPlus in Melbourne (and QLD) sell it by the metre, or made leads http://www.satplus.com.au/category26_1.htm but what you save on the cable price, you'd lose on postage. I literally have kilometres of it, but I'm not back in Sydney for a few weeks. Forum member charlesc does installs in Sydney also... perhaps he can help?
Paranoid666au Posted May 19, 2008 Author Posted May 19, 2008 (edited) OK thanks for that and your PM Sidor. I might get some cable from Jaycar or DSE, seems cheap enough. I might even have one or two F Connectors lying around. Edited May 19, 2008 by Paranoid666au

Thanks EDIT: It's for cable not satellite. Do you currently have Foxtel??? It sounds like you use to and now don't, but thinking of getting it again. You also say it would be for an iQ2 so you wouldn't have that yet. My solution would be just get the Foxtel installer to give you the 8-10m lead when he installs the service. Then you don't need to pay for it. You also wouldn't have to pay if you did decide to get the outlet installed at the other position. Your already going to have to pay for installation your going to pay the same if you ask for a 8-10m cable or ask them to install an outlet at another position.
Paranoid666au Posted May 19, 2008 Author Posted May 19, 2008 Yea I used to have Foxtel last year. So with the cable already in I would be asking for a DYI install. If I don't get Foxtel HD, that 5 star deal doesn't look so bad though. $5 install $5 per month for iQ. Then I could get an 8m cable from the installer.

You'd probably pay $25 for the 10m RG6 quad with F connectors if you were to do it yourself.
nipper Posted May 19, 2008 Posted May 19, 2008 also if you are into any pay per view you require a phone connection for IQ
Hosko Posted May 19, 2008 Posted May 19, 2008 also if you are into any pay per view you require a phone connection for IQ They can install a wireless phone extender thingy if you don't want them to wire the point in. If it looks like a tough job they go for this option very quickly.
Paranoid666au Posted May 19, 2008 Author Posted May 19, 2008 (edited) Yea I should have mention that too. There is a phone connection that Foxtel put in, the ADSL filter is still there even. So I'll just run a phone line extension cable as well. I used to have a really long one I got with my Sega Dreamcast years ago, I lost it a while back, would have come in handy. Hmm, I wonder if it's possible to run the foxtel phone thing through VoIP. Would make the phone calls much cheaper that way. Edited May 19, 2008 by Paranoid666au
