Fronty Posted May 19, 2008 Posted May 19, 2008 According to a rumour on the TWGF which is the lil'ol2%SBS gypsy channel's football message board..... ESPN Acquires from MP & Silva Rights to Italy’s Serie A in the Pacific Rim Through 2010 ESPN has signed a two year agreement with MP & Silva for rights to Italy’s Serie A in the Pacific Rim. The agreement covers the 2008/09 – 2009/10 seasons. ESPN will have the exclusive television rights to telecast all home matches of the top ten clubs in Serie A: AC Milan, FC Inter Milan, FC Juventus, Fiorentina, AS Roma, SS Lazio, Genoa, Cagliari, Catania and Torino. Serie A is the top division of the Italian Football League and is widely regarded as one of the top football leagues in the world. The rights were acquired from MP & Silva, the international sports agency that owns and distributes the Italian Serie A media rights worldwide. “We are thrilled we will continue to have Serie A in our programming lineup,” said Tim Bunnell, senior vice president, programming and marketing, ESPN International. “Serie A is home to some of the world’s top players and most storied clubs, and fans throughout the Pacific Rim will now be able to see expanded coverage on ESPN, along with the other top European football properties we air, making our networks the place to see the best in European football.” Carlo Pozzali CEO, MP & Silva USA branch said "We are delighted to expand our partnership with ESPN, a broadcast partner which ensures top class coverage for Italian Serie A in the Pacific Rim.” Serie A joins ESPN’s lineup of top European football properties, including UEFA Champions League, UEFA Cup and Spain‘s La Liga, allowing Pacific Rim fans to see some of the world’s best football matches, teams and players in one place. Italian Serie A is considered one of the top three football leagues in the world. Top teams include AC Milan, Juventus and the current Italian Serie A Champions Inter Milan. ESPN have also secured rights to internet and broadband in addition to mobile clip rights. Now there's no confirmation link for this post but its similar to an E mail I got from ESPN international last week......
the_wonderchild Posted May 19, 2008 Posted May 19, 2008 Bloody brilliant news! I certainly hope it turns out to be true, because it means more people with Foxtel will have access to the coverage.
MattWinter Posted May 19, 2008 Posted May 19, 2008 Yeah great news, shame it took this long, but looking forward to some good Serie A games next season.
Deaf Bhoy Posted May 19, 2008 Posted May 19, 2008 One thing I noticed Serie A isn't widescreen but yet the 2nd leg of the Uefa Cup tie between Firentina v Rangers in Italy was in widescreen. The German league also isn't widescreen but a German FA Cup game I saw on Setanta once was...puzzling? Yer'd think the big leagues of Europe would want to showcase their games in widescreen now days? As we've seen with SBS even when widescreen footage is available for certain games eg. Champions League thay don't always bless us with the widescreen broadcast and don't be surprised even with ESPN HD if we still don't get football games in widescreen!

I doubt ESPN will take a HD feed from Sky Italia, but hopefully the international feeds (the same ones that both ESPN and Setanta get) will be HD next year. BTW. Virtually all football in Europe is shot in widescreen - we just often don't get it here.

Understood but surely if Serie A is going to be on ESPNHD the source material would be the one and the same HD footage shot from sky italia? im just looking forward to some good quality stuff its a shame setanta has the euros thee watermark is not high enough for my liking....
Deaf Bhoy Posted May 20, 2008 Posted May 20, 2008 im just looking forward to some good quality stuffits a shame setanta has the euros thee watermark is not high enough for my liking.... Aye the Setanta watermark has been a sore point for most of us for quite awhile! I dug up one of Matt's old posts where he made a good example of how it should look! Hasn't been mentioned in a while, but although the Setanta watermark is much better than it used to be, it still could use a little tweaking - it's still quite big, and I think the lower half of the watermark (black bit behind the "live" section) could be more transparent. Also, comparing it to the UK watermark, it seems that there is more space around the actual "setanta" text - the UK watermark seems more compact and I think it's much better. I'd like to see the Australian watermark tweaked to look a lot more like the UK watermark.Edit: to illustrate my point, current watermark on left, what I am suggesting on the right. http://img170.imageshack.us/img170/140/setantaih7.jpg I have an even better idea I'll try whack an example up when I get some time. The thing is Setanta should ave the tech's who can work on this themselves?
ajhogg Posted May 20, 2008 Posted May 20, 2008 Pity they couldn't secure the rights to a decent, non-corrupt league actually worth watching.
BrigateRossoNeri Posted May 20, 2008 Posted May 20, 2008 Pity they couldn't secure the rights to a decent, non-corrupt league actually worth watching. LOL it just had to happen... buddy take your stirring opinions elsewhere... theres no point questioning the ability of the players, teams in the league or nation because the tropheys for the nation and its clubs and their stars accolades speak loader than your hate now moving forward

It's more of a pity when misinformed opinions and comments are judged from an outside approach, and with little internal knowledge of events (something, i too cannot speak for, hence would not make such a rash statement). What about the English leagues? We've all heard about the Harry Redknapp stories and the like. Does this make the EPL or its subsiduary leagues corrupt and non-decent? I think not.
BrigateRossoNeri Posted May 20, 2008 Posted May 20, 2008 LOL it doesn't surprise me if i was on a soccer forum but this is DTV what the? id hope for some more decorum discussing iq2 select tvs inability to be bold or the future of HDMI not 'Italans are cheats...' WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH THAT GUY

I doubt the SD version of ESPN is going to be a down convert of the HD channel. The HD channel has to only show HD material which means the SD channel will have different material. Plus why make the SD channel better if you want people to go HD?
Fronty Posted May 21, 2008 Author Posted May 21, 2008 Now ESPN have the rights to both Serie A and La Liga perhaps they will produce or commission some sort of highlights/magazine show whereby they will show all the goals and action from the two leagues..... I know they do a Soccernet Press Pass how but thats only half and hour which is way too short!! Apart from Setanta Sports who have some excellent magazine and highlights shows there is a dearth of decent specific football magazine content on both FoxSports and ESPN international. Setanta has three fantastic hour long football shows covering the English Premier League.... Macca's Monday Night,Football Matters and The Friday Football Show and ESPN could learn a lot from them...... Their Scottish shows are quality aswell even if the standard of the actual football is a bit poor.... PS I'm with BrigateRossoNeri the Calciopoli scandal is something that need not be discussed on a foxtel forum. As it goes t was major embaressment for the football community in Italy and is something they'll take years to get over.....I'm only interested in the quality of the football and Serie A is one of the best and i look forward to some great games next year!!!
BrigateRossoNeri Posted May 21, 2008 Posted May 21, 2008 you are 100% wrong & that's the truth. im italian and the games are corrupted like hell in Italy. dude corruption is rifle in world sports... why don't u mention the match fixing in Germany 3 years ago or 'bungs' in the EPL or bruce grobbelar taking bribes to cop coals for Liverpool? yes Italy has it problems teams with more influence and favorable decisions.... but no more or less than the big clubs in engand spain and Germany also receive just to kill this anti Italian football rant for every Italian example of trechary bad sports or corruption u can draw a comparison to somewhere else... my suggestion is to watch games and enjoy them im just sick of ill informed hateful opinions 'Italians are cheats' 'Italy is corrupt' **** guys i think i said it earlier i thought this WAS A TV FORUM ???

I HOPE ONE DAY it gets cleaned up. like the germans and english did. the other leagues were bets scandels with refferis and players, serie A is a lot worse and can not be cleaned. sorry it's my opinion, not trying to put serie A down.

I'm not denying there are issues, these issues are everywhere in professional sport. you say it in a way to detract for the efforts of players and their ability's and talents and i think thats wrong Italy produces many great talents its just most people don't see them cuz many don't go to the EPL and the average football fan dosent see beyond the premier league
