larry42 Posted May 18, 2008 Posted May 18, 2008 (edited) While i realise that new features and audio/video formats will always be coming.... with the present formats -dvd/bluray/hdtv if you look (or listen :-) ) to present avr's eg denon 3808/4308 , yamaha 1800/3800, etc do they miss any features or formats that are out now ? -the present avr's have hdmi inputs/outputs , plus the new hidef sound formats so they seem to be as 'up to date' as they can be ? Looking at it solely from a format stance larry ; it really cant get any better than the lossless decoding we have now ; lossy codecs always had room for improvement ; past history now . Computer codecs like flac may be implemented more in the future[if thats important]but there are ways around this. The obvious trend will be more hdmi inputs and less analog ones in the future; but switchers are available.Specific features the yamaha's lack [which wont matter if you dont upscale] is scaling a analog input rather than an hdmi one . Similarly the denons use faroudja upscaling not reon [not including the avp or avc's realta]. I wouldnt worry about these if using hd sources as scaling will become redundant eventually as hd proliferates. Ide be more interested by denons dual differential dac's
eleventyseven Posted May 18, 2008 Posted May 18, 2008 If you get on this bandwagon, expect there to be a new, updated, extra special, faster bandwagon coming really soon. I remember buying gear that was "future proof" years ago... must've been a different future (twilight zone) than the one I'm experiencing now. I actually think change is accelerating now. I even heard yesterday of a movie that was 7.1 only (haven't confirmed it myself though). If that's the case it's useless to me and if I want to watch it I'll have to upgrade. If you like the gear you're looking at and you think it represents value for money get on board and enjoy it to the max - but don't expect there won't be new codecs, upscaling chips, connection types, surround sound options, etc coming real soon to a store near you. I'll get off my soap box now.

The one thing for sure is that they will continue to upgrade receivers.Ok soon all will have the latest codecs and a gazillion HDMI in/outs. Then they will start adding things like what the Denon pre/pro has with room correction and para EQ. So there will always be something better, they'll make sure of it.
Shonky* Posted May 19, 2008 Posted May 19, 2008 Nothing is ever future proof. End of story. That said, I think you would be reasonably ok for a few years with a current receiver with the latest codecs and enough HDMI inputs (3 and probably 4).

larry42 Posted May 19, 2008 Author Posted May 19, 2008 hi skonky and other i don't expect to get an avr and be future proof for ever i just wanted the check that if i got a decent avr now, that there isn't any present format/codec that i will need.. and it seems that the present range of mid/high avr's cover the present formats and codecs
Shonky* Posted May 19, 2008 Posted May 19, 2008 As long as you get a receiver with TrueHD and DTS HD MA (as well as receiving PCM) you'll have all the current codecs covered. If it can receive PCM then if a new format/player comes out that can decode the codec itself, it should be able to pass the decoded PCM to the receiver and will work just fine. Any half way decent receiver can do that these days.
