The title pretty much says it all.

As my other thread mentioned, one the new speakers im looking at for my PC are the definitive tech procinema 1000's.

I notice that the center channels are just about the same price each as the "mains" or bookshelves, but offer "more" in terms of drivers and radiators.

see this link (click on the specifications tab) , is there something im missing or would i be better off going for 2 center channels?

I think those MTM designs are meant to sound better when mounted vertically. You probably can mount the center channel horizontally but try to mount the mains vertically to give better sound dispersion. But yeah if the cost of a center channel is half the price of a pair of mains, and had an extra woofer, and were the same size drivers, then I'd definitely get three centers. Then you'll know you have an equally matched front stage. Might as well get an extra two for your rears as well. :P

The answer depends on how you arrange the two centres. One above and below the screen shouldn't be a real issue. But, in my experience, placing them left and right of the screen is not a good idea. When the speaker is mounted dead centre, people across the screen hear the sound coming from the centre of the screen, which is what we want. When you have a pair mounted either side, people seated to one side will hear the sound as if it is emanating from the speaker they sit closer to.
