Tony2038 Posted May 17, 2008 Posted May 17, 2008 (edited) Anyone know if this is being broadcast in HD ???? Edited May 17, 2008 by Tony2038
digitalj Posted May 17, 2008 Posted May 17, 2008 Anyone know if this is being broadcast in HD ???? no. SBS has no native HD. Even then SBS 'HD' is only 576p and tends to look worse than SBS SD at 576i
Rev Posted May 17, 2008 Posted May 17, 2008 Yeah, I watched UEFA Cup Final Thursday morning on SBS SD, and it looked pretty decent. I'd assume FA Cup Final will be widescreen also?!
suldaman Posted May 17, 2008 Posted May 17, 2008 champions league games are never in widescreen. So i dont expect the fa cup final to either.
nordesmic Posted May 17, 2008 Posted May 17, 2008 champions league games are never in widescreen. So i dont expect the fa cup final to either. The two aren't related. The FA Cup was in widescreen last year, from memory. I think it would be the same this year.
MattWinter Posted May 17, 2008 Posted May 17, 2008 The FA Cup final has been in widescreen for years - it will definately be this year, hopefully it will be shown here in HD before too long. Nobody knows why the Champions league isn't in widescreen more, there have been about 2 champions league games that have ever been shown in widescreen (the 2005 final and one of last year's semis).

Champions League is shot in widescreen. Its just SBS doesn't get a 16:9 feed.
MattWinter Posted May 17, 2008 Posted May 17, 2008 Well yeah, I would think that SBS would usually have a widescreen feed avaliable to them - they just don't pay for it or something... Setanta has shown a lot of champions league in widescreen, of course they take feeds straight from the UK (and their coverage is delayed only).

SBS = cheap I really don't think they should get government funding if they bid for events that someone else would show. Really all they do is drive the bidding up and end up wasting tax payer money. I'd much prefer it to be on Foxtel, would get it in widescreen and might even get viewers choice that way. Yes I know ESPN already has the Pay TV rights, I'm just annoyed by SBS coverage. It sucks and they always use crap commentators. Edited May 17, 2008 by Hosko

They showed Football/Soccer when no one else was interested. OT they also introduced a lot of people to some great foreign films.I still think there is a place for them as their funding is minuscule compared to the millions wasted in other areas.

They also use to not show commercials in the middle of shows. Now they seem to put on shows that will rate well rather then shows that appeal to their traditional audience. They want to become more commercial they shouldn't get government funding.
MattWinter Posted May 17, 2008 Posted May 17, 2008 I think the best thing for SBS would be to focus on highlights shows, reviews, general coverage rather than extensive live coverage of selected competitions. Rather than spending money on the Champions leauge, I'd much rather see them buy back the EPL highlights program, and start showing a few review programs from European leagues and other competitions. The word is that after next season, one channel will gain exclusive rights to the Champions league, and I can't see SBS outbidding the likes of Setanta, ESPN or Fox. Maybe if Setanta buys the rights they will allow SBS to have some coverage - Setanta and SBS seem to have a good relationship.
Deaf Bhoy Posted May 17, 2008 Posted May 17, 2008 What's worse is that Basheer is commentating... Lucky I'm too deaf but I can imagine he's a piss poor commentator! SBS should just get the BBC feed including the pre game build up and forget about Les and those tools in the Studio! I'd like to see Setanta get the Champions League rights but thay'd need to seriously start lookin at bring Setanta Sports 2 Down Under.

SDL Posted May 17, 2008 Posted May 17, 2008 Forgetting Basheer commentating, and worse expert comments from interupting Bosnich whos says the same thing over and over, it was good coverage. It was, and has been previously, widescreen, and that is the best at the moment we can hope for. I prefer it on SBS to Channel Nein or some such that would be breaking for ads as much as possible and would leave out anthems, Abide With Me, cup presentation etc. And I don't want it on Sentanta as I don't pay for it. So I am happy SBS gets it. Sure it isn't SKY/BBC/ITV coverage, but it's the best we have.

We don't always get crap commentators - In the past we have had the English commentators, or Martin Tyler (reknowned as one of the best in the business) doing it for SBS; 2. SBS do have it in Widescreen; Which FTA channel would you prefer? At least as I said above you get the lead up and the cup presentation, any Commercial Channel would butcher it as they did in the past.
mwd Posted May 18, 2008 Posted May 18, 2008 O.T. I know but SBS are about the only FTA station that cover Cycle Racing. Pretty good job they do with it too.

Please! Please when did the champions league get close to a million viewers. Heck when has it ever rated over around 500,000 Which FTA channel would you prefer? At least as I said above you get the lead up and the cup presentation, any Commercial Channel would butcher it as they did in the past. Personally I don't subscribe to the notion that sport should be free. I'm happy to pay to watch it as long as its delivered with in depth coverage. Look at how Fox Sports presents the Premier League, its better coverage then you can watch on Sky Sport in England. In England last week you had the choice of the Man U match or the Chelsea match, here you could also watch the relegation battle.

Nah the ABC use to do a better job when thay just used the BBC feed with the real FA Cup commentator John Motson... forget Tyler and Basheer! Back in those days there was also Big League Soccer with Brian Moore RIP Ah the good ol' days!
blairy Posted May 18, 2008 Posted May 18, 2008 Basheer was ordinary and bosnich awful...however even they were light years ahead of the village idiots on ESPN (who also had coverage). WS too, as FA Cup has been for some years now, and to me PQ was better than any football I've seen on foxtel in recent times (OT - sooner fox goes HD the better)...no SBS is not HD but it was still better (to my eyes) than fox. Looking forward to ECL final on Thursday and SBS will do it better than ESPN for sure. cheers blairy
MattWinter Posted May 18, 2008 Posted May 18, 2008 I worked out about 30 minutes into the game that you could listen to BBC commentary through channel 867 on Foxtel (sbs radio) - a quick change of cables and I had fantastic commentators for the rest of the game. Put both SBS and ESPN to shame (although they were radio commentators so they were a little over-descriptive, but personally I don't mind that.)
Saxon Hall Posted May 18, 2008 Posted May 18, 2008 Back in those days there was also Big League Soccer with Brian Moore RIP Ah the good ol' days! What a great show it was . Brian Moore was fantastic, 70's hairstyles, and all shown on a one week turnaround, ah memories. Speaking of memories what about the great David and Goliath 1973 FA Cup. Mighty top flight Leeds United against lowly 2nd Div Sunderland. Leeds was stacked with International players against the no international battlers. One of the greatest mismatches in the history of the Cup. Sunderland lifted the Cup against all odds. This sums up the romance of the competition.
JimmyXR6T04 Posted May 18, 2008 Posted May 18, 2008 personally, i chose SBS over ESPN when watching the champions league semi finals. Even though ESPN is in widescreen, it was so blurry, and blotchy. SBS has a better picture quality. This is on a 50" panasonic. I'll probably watch the final on SBS too. Although i flick it over to ESPN when i want to rewind the IQ box and see something again! But i agree, the commentators on SBS aren't the best!!
Hosko Posted May 18, 2008 Posted May 18, 2008 Even though ESPN is in widescreen, ESPN isn't widescreen
