ToeCutter Posted May 17, 2008 Posted May 17, 2008 (edited) Looking at the coverage map, Nyngan is just outside the broadcast area for Dubbo. Is it possible to pick up DTV with a booster or any special equipment? I'm not there yet so can't test it out but will be moving in a few weeks. Edited May 17, 2008 by ToeCutter
digitalj Posted May 17, 2008 Posted May 17, 2008 Nyngan has a translator: http://www2b.abc.net.au/reception/frequenc...missionid=14329 EDIT: According to current licenses on ACMA, Nyngan has Access to ABC and WIN on Analogue and ABC on Digital. EDIT2: According to Alanh's Get the best reception post, Nyngan has access to ABC, PRIME and WIN on Analogue and will have those 3 on digital as well, so if you don't watch TEN/SC10 or SBS, then what's available at Nyngan should work perfectly for you.
wahroonga farm Posted May 17, 2008 Posted May 17, 2008 This is what the April 08 ACMA report shows. Mixed H+V & A+D ....but not much
alanh Posted May 17, 2008 Posted May 17, 2008 ToeCutter, If you are living in town, you will only need a small band 5 Yagi antenna and a STB. The STB will be used for the ABC digital on channel 53 and WIN is on analog on Channel 60. I am sorry to say this is the only program choice. Any future new channels can be received with the above antenna. AlanH
wahroonga farm Posted May 17, 2008 Posted May 17, 2008 (edited) Depending on where you live Mt Cenn may be an option? Or maybe Tottenham? A quick scan around town for antennas will sort you out. Edited May 17, 2008 by wahroonga farm
alanh Posted May 17, 2008 Posted May 17, 2008 Wahroonga Farm, Why do you think that transmitters have been installed in Nyngan? Tottenham is a very low powered transmitter. AlanH
wahroonga farm Posted May 17, 2008 Posted May 17, 2008 Nyngan itself is in a flood plain and requires local coverage, however depending on your needs and actual location, alternative reception may be available.
ToeCutter Posted May 18, 2008 Author Posted May 18, 2008 There seems to be some competing response as to what digital channels I'll get. Will I be able to get ABC only? Or ABC, Prime, and WIN as digital?

alanh Posted May 18, 2008 Posted May 18, 2008 Digitalj, The ABC is definately on in digital in Nyngan. There is no Prime transmitters in Nyngan of any type. WIN is only analog. Any new services will be digital only. AlanH

AlanH I wasn't denying that ABC existed in my previous post and I thought there was no PRIME, however, your get the best reception post says that Nyngan has PRIME, i.e Your posts says the following is available: ABN3, ABN53, CBN66, CBN65*, WIN60, WIN59* *not yet available

Better than nothing and means my Topfield won't go to waste.
mtv Posted May 18, 2008 Posted May 18, 2008 So WIN is virtually channel 9? Correct... WIN is the channel 9 regional affiliate network.
wahroonga farm Posted May 18, 2008 Posted May 18, 2008 (edited) AFAIK, the ACMA 2008 April report (3 May excel report) and image excerpts as posted, are correct (they are clickable links ). PS I wouldn't be holding my breath for more local (Nyngan) transmitter/translator services in the near future. If you're serious about additional digital channels; then go looking for fringe reception as discussed. The current ACMA channel assignment is pretty thin, despite Alan's assurances. Here's the full Media Release. Let us know how you go when you get there. Edited May 18, 2008 by wahroonga farm

According to the july 2006 ACMA Media bullatin, CBN (country Boradcasing Network) which is owned by Prime, and is basically the same as channel 7. Has been assigned the ability to broadcast, but according to the Official ACMA April 2008 stations listing I posted earlier after almost two years its still yet to broadcast in Nyngan. I think the only other option for the origional poster would be going satellite TV. Where he can get all States ABC and SBS digital SD. Or get a one off purchase of a smart card to access the "Optus Aurora" remote area broadcasting service. See below link for a list of channels available on the Optus Aurora sattelite service. http://www.satworld.com.au/downloads/Auror...nnel%20Info.pdf Edited May 19, 2008 by g12345567
RayDio Posted May 19, 2008 Posted May 19, 2008 (edited) Having Spent some time working in that neck of the woods some years ago the only suggestion would be Mt Cenn Cruiach (Central West Slopes) The basic signal test would be with a portable FM Radio (Antenna Fully Extended) and see if you can receive the ABC Radio services from Cenn Cruiach JJJ 102.3, Classic FM 105.5, News radio 106.3, Abc local 107.1 & Radio National 107.9 If these stations are audable outside your house at ground level there is a good chance that a Hi Gain antenna system Mounted from top of the house will pull in the TV Signal from the same site. Cenn Cruiach digital signals are Digital ABC VHF 12 (Vert) Prime (7) UHF 41 (Hor)****Dunno If Operational Yet**** SBS UHF 44 (Hor) WIN (9) UHF 45 (Hor) SC-10 (10) UHF 46 (Hor) Annalog Prime VHF 6 (Vert) ABC VHF 11 (Vert) SBS UHF 29 (Hor) WIN UHF 32 (Hor) SC-10 UHF 35 (Hor) Edited May 19, 2008 by left behind
wahroonga farm Posted May 19, 2008 Posted May 19, 2008 (edited) ....... Or get a one off purchase of a smart card to access the "Optus Aurora" remote area broadcasting service....... Unfortunately as Nyngan is well and truly in the terrestrial licence area, Aurora reception via Optus C1, for other than ABC (no ABC2 or Dig radio from Aurora) and SBS (in SD equivalent DVB-S, 4:3 only), will mean completion of an ACMA B58, by a suitably knowledgeable bod, ...... which quickly sorts the men from the boys. And in any case who wants the weather and bull prices in Catherine Edited May 19, 2008 by wahroonga farm
wahroonga farm Posted May 19, 2008 Posted May 19, 2008 Having Spent some time working in that neck of the woods ....... Good straightforward advice. Tks left behind.
ToeCutter Posted July 8, 2008 Author Posted July 8, 2008 Well here I am living in Nyngan with ABC digital coming through nicely. Got my hopes up last night, was a cloudy and cold evening, thought I'd try to scan more channels and found I was receiving Prime, WIN, and SC10. I was stoked!!! But it wasn't to last, no sign of it this morning or again this evening. Local antenna guy tells me we're about 180kms from Mt Cenn Cruich and that 150kms is usually the limit of transmission, however unusual weather conditions sometimes allow for the digital reception I experienced last night. He tells me Prime was due to commence broadcasting in the area last month, and now this month, but not to hold my breath...
alanh Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 Toe Cutter, Mt Cenn Cruaich does not have a Prime digital transmitter currently. The only other possibilities are NEN9A on Mt Dowe or CBN 37 on Mt Canobolas What antenna are you using and what direction is it pointed. AlanH
digitalj Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 Toe Cutter,Mt Cenn Cruaich does not have a Prime digital transmitter currently. The only other possibilities are NEN9A on Mt Dowe or CBN 37 on Mt Canobolas What antenna are you using and what direction is it pointed. AlanH given that Mt. Dowe doesn't and never will have WIN, instead it has/will have NBN and that Mt Cenn Cruaich doesn't have PRIME and Toecutter said he got PRIME, WIN and SC10, I'd have to say that it's pointing to Mt. Canobolas as the site where they came from.
alanh Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 DigitalJ. Mt Dowe is an NBN site, Mt Cenn Cruaich is a WIN site and is on air. AlanH
digitalj Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 DigitalJ.Mt Dowe is an NBN site, Mt Cenn Cruaich is a WIN site and is on air. AlanH I knew that, hence: "instead it has/will have NBN", it was due to the fact that Mt. Dowe is an NBN that I knew it couldn't be Mt. Dowe that Toecutter got the commercials from.

Dowe that Toecutter got the commercials from. The absolute Limit to Mt Dowe's Fringe Reception to the south west is Halfway between Gilgandra & Warren. The Only Major TX site that can be received in Nyngan would be Cenn Cruiach, I Can remember staying at the Overlander Hotel/Motel & Being able to listen to JJJ (Only Just) on 102.3 from Cenn Cruiach on My Portable radio. To The Best of My Knowlage the Overlander @ Nyngan had a big antenna system so they could receive SC-10 (Annalog) from Cenn Cruiach in the main bar because they don't have a local repeater out there.
