Tassie Devil Posted May 17, 2008 Posted May 17, 2008 Should have posted here before about this. This was replaced with a Sony VW200 in January which is better, but not dramatically so. The Barco had its life on the floor with excellent cooling so has not been subjected to the heat of ceiling mounted units. Buyer pays freight. We live in N.Tasmania but you will need a van or wagon if you wish to collect as it is not small. I have a brochure I can email if you get in touch at j_coulson@[miss this out]bigpond.com If you are at all interested please get in touch ASAP as we will be away for some time leaving the last week of the month. John EDIT: That figure I originally posted of $70+K is misleading as it included a Barco BSE40 quadrupler which I stupidly nuked. Apologies for the misleading header. Now corrected. It was nearer to $55k but at this stage of depreciation it is all rather academic!

John Is this the Graphics 808s model that uses the Sony tubes or the Data 808s with the MEC tubes?
Tassie Devil Posted May 17, 2008 Author Posted May 17, 2008 Is this the Graphics 808s model that uses the Sony tubes or the Data 808s with the MEC tubes? Hi Ken Not sure. What is the difference and is there any easy way of finding out? John
ArthurDent Posted May 17, 2008 Posted May 17, 2008 Hi KenNot sure. What is the difference and is there any easy way of finding out? John Morning John, I'd hope it would say on the unit somewhere or in the manual and here's a link to my mate Curt's section on the 808 which may be of help... http://www.curtpalme.com/Barco808.shtm
bizzibee Posted May 17, 2008 Posted May 17, 2008 (edited) Morning John,I'd hope it would say on the unit somewhere or in the manual and here's a link to my mate Curt's section on the 808 which may be of help... http://www.curtpalme.com/Barco808.shtm Taken from the above link: http://www.curtpalme.com/Barco808.shtm ...The Data 808, Data 808s, and Graphics 808 models use MEC tubes that are rebuildable, the Graphics 808s model uses Sony tubes that are currently (April 2006) not rebuildable. The cost of the MEC tubes are $500.00 USD for a rebuild, the Sony's are $1300.00 USD and can only be purchased as new..... Bottom line is: Barco Data 808, Barco Data 808s, and Barco Graphics 808 models use MEC tubes. Barco Graphics 808s model uses Sony tubes. Edited May 17, 2008 by bizzibee

mig36 Posted May 21, 2008 Posted May 21, 2008 Hi John, Is the PJ still for sale? I currently have a Barcovision 508 and would like to upgrade. Have you fed the 808 HD DVD or Blu ray and if so which video processor did you use (would have to factor this into the cost)? I imagine frieghting this over to Adelaide would be pretty expensive! Tim Yes it is a DATA model so definitely has the MEC tubes.John

Have you fed the 808 HD DVD or Blu ray and if so which video processor did you use (would have to factor this into the cost)? I imagine frieghting this over to Adelaide would be pretty expensive! Tim Yes it is still FSA. I fed it scaled up SD via an iscan DVDO HD+ and had very good results. Note the 808s has RGBHV input and that fitted in well via the iScan. My Iscan has been sold. freight to Adelaide would not be inexpensive but it would still make the 808s a cheap buy. One problem: We will be away for a bit early next week so if you are serious, we would have to move quickly - not trying to pressurise you but that is the situation. Give it some thought. I'm about to go out now but will be back this afternoon so email me off board at j_coulson@[miss this out]bigpond.com or ring me at 0363281237.

Have you fed the 808 HD DVD or Blu ray and if so which video processor did you use (would have to factor this into the cost)? I imagine frieghting this over to Adelaide would be pretty expensive! Tim Back home earlier than expected. I measured it and rang a freighting company and the price to send it to central Adelaide was quoted as $123.80 - I guess that is at their depot. To have it sent to a suberb would be extra cost with a local carrier but collecting it from the depot would save a lot as long as you did it with a waqgon, van or ute - it is too big to go in a car. If we go ahead I will have to borrow a ute from a neighbour to deliver it to Launceston. Monday is the last day I can do this. So if you want it, get in touch ASAP and $1070 would get it to central Adelaide for you. Just did a quick Google and a brand new iScan HD+ is FS for $999 at http://sfbay.craigslist.org/nby/ele/688447988.html but this place has one for $300 - a steal http://www.onecall.com/ProductSearch.aspx?N=1330 Items imported at that price attract no duty or GST so you could get completely set up for not much over $1600 all up. Some one on DTV site was offering one FS some time ago so you could strike lucky locally. Hope we can go ahead, it is a very good projector and has a lot of life in it yet. I had it installed on the floor and not up in the hot ceiling so no doubt that has helped. John
Tassie Devil Posted May 22, 2008 Author Posted May 22, 2008 $70K!?!? Actually more than that - sales tax was in vogue at the time.

ledge Posted May 22, 2008 Posted May 22, 2008 $70K!?!? well i got a 708mm BarcoVision about 9 ago, that was close to 18k. 12k hours?, are those original lamps in there ? ... if so, i thought the life was around 4k at best.. i could be wrong though.

Those are the original lamps. Lamp life could be heavily influenced by the heat factor. The lamps in this unit still have life left in them - absolutely no sign of redness. Also it could be that cheaper lamps were put in lesser models. Just rang Barco and they said 15k was the more usual life as long as they were not fed static images (as these burn the tubes unevenly). Tim I went from a BV508 to the BG808 and the difference was dramatic. Because HD DVD and Blu ray are 60Hz sources a video processor isn't required, there are no porch issues. The 808s should have had component inputs which may or may not be hd component, so you may not even need a transcoder. Otherwise factor in $200 for a good YUV>RGB transcoder. The 808's a great unit, I'd highly recommend it.
Tassie Devil Posted May 22, 2008 Author Posted May 22, 2008 $70K!?!? You are right in querying this. The $70k is misleading and I've corrected the original post. Memory is not so good in old age - my excuse and I'm sticking to it! John

John I dunno, still a little misleading, rrp of a 808 data was closer to US$17k But I guess most who are looking at CRT's these days realise they can be had for much less anyway. For your asking price the buyer is getting a bargain performer for sure! Ps. Nice gear Edited May 23, 2008 by Gino

For your asking price the buyer is getting a bargain performer for sure! Ps. Nice gear Not trying to be misleading. I know what I paid and unfortunately it was big bucks (which were worth more then than they are now). Looks absurd in the light of what you can get now but at the time it was the only real high end video choice. CRT still reigns supreme for colour + blacks although the VW200 is close. It is hard to judge just how much progress I have really made because I'm now using a different processor feed + now have different inputs (main one being the Topfield 7000 with its software problems). Thanks for the compliment re the gear. It has grown like Topsy and is completely insane but I guess that fits John
