Pfeff Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 Dropped by Macgregor store to look at laptops and noticed B2G1F Blu-ray offer on selected titles. Good range of titles, most in but Disney excluded. Also noticed the odd price reduction too. By promo material, looked like company promo not just this store. Cheers.
the_wonderchild Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 yep, apparently started a few days ago. Our very own DTV 'insider' tipped us off http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?s=&...t&p=1057791

Sorry. Been travelling and not up to date on the forum. Didn't drill down far enough to see it had already been posted. Oh well, JB probably won't mind a second plug (unintentional!)
betty boop Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 thanks for hte heads up, I've been travellign most of the last couple of weeks and didnt know either. might pop in and see whats to be had
mickwounds Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 i waited a few weeks for JB to do this deal as ezydvd was already doing it. heard nothing of JB doing it so i bought a few movies at ezydvd then i go into JB a few days later and they are doing it. haha. annoying but it worked out ok because ezydvd is doing disney titles like pirates of the carribean which i picked up and jb was doing simpsons movie and die hard 4 which ezydvd werent doing which i picked up.
PKK Posted May 17, 2008 Posted May 17, 2008 JB prices are different between stores as much as $3 so I have to mix and match around. Too bad I bought most I want from ezydvd before their sale including some $42 disc.
Sunshine Ed Posted May 17, 2008 Posted May 17, 2008 Went into the JB HiFi at Kawana to look at this and was massively underwhelmed... Most titles had been put up to $40. Some older catalogue titles were around for $25 (Bullit, Dog Day Afternoon, etc) but none of them grabbed me enough to make me trade up from my DVD's. And there was a lot of stock that was noticeable by it's absence - no Die Hard 4, I, Robot, Aliens vs Predator 1 or 2 or 30 Days of Night. So, they had effectively cleared the shelves of anything remotely resembling a new release, put the price up on some titles, put out a load of back catalogue and vanilla releases and expected everyone to get excited. The final straw was when I asked a sales drone if Close Encounters was included in the B2G1 sale only to be told "No, because that's a box-set" despite it only being a two disc edition in slightly chunkier packaging. At which point I thought "F*ck it" and walked out. And this is why I only own 1 Blu Ray title....
klokwerk Posted May 17, 2008 Posted May 17, 2008 It's a pity to hear this about various JB stores; all the pricing up prior to the sale and lacking in the recent release stock. However, it does depend on whether that store's DVD people are on top of things and honest, I suppose. From the few titles you mentioned, I can say that my local JB has plenty of Die Hard 4, AVP2 and 30 Days of Night in stock. Not sure about I, Robot. Also, the only "boxsets" that should be excluded from the deal are: * Planet Earth: Complete Series * Spider-Man Trilogy * Pixar: Shorts Volume 1 (I think this is similar to CE3K, and so should be allowed, but hey, what're you gonna do?) Basically, the Close Encounters Blu-Ray should be part of the sale as far as I know. Finally, this sale has been extended to the end of June. That means I'll be grabbing Men in Black as part of the B2G1F when it comes in (yes the promo does apply to new releases that arrive during the promo period.
the_wonderchild Posted May 17, 2008 Posted May 17, 2008 Sunshine, that's bad to hear mate. I went to my local JB yesterday and bought my dad some Blu-Ray's as a birthday present. Ended up with Ronin (he loves that one and i didn't mind it when i rented it), Space Odyssey (another of his favourites) and can't remember the otehr one at the moment. I enquired about Close Encounters and it was included; i already own it so no point in doubling up. They also had heaps of AvP and 30 Days of Night, but the most bemusing thing i found was that some of their titles were actually at $35. Looking at Master & Commander, Robocop, Ronin, Day after Tommorrow, and a few others, it was very suprsing, however, i think i know why.
klokwerk Posted May 17, 2008 Posted May 17, 2008 A number of titles were marked down permanently from $39.99 to $34/$35.99 some time earlier this year. Primarily the barebones Fox releases it would seem.
The D-Train Posted May 17, 2008 Posted May 17, 2008 And there was a lot of stock that was noticeable by it's absence - no Die Hard 4, I, Robot, Aliens vs Predator 1 or 2 or 30 Days of Night. I Robot hasnt been released in Aust yet. Im not sure how much youve seen on these forums (so hopefully im not telling you how to suck eggs) but the best way to go is check out Mo's thread here: http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?showtopic=50447 Then order all the region free ones from Amazon or Dvd pacific in the US. ( I prefer Dvd pacific) It works out much cheaper.
twinkle toes Posted May 17, 2008 Posted May 17, 2008 I don't know why anyone isn't surprised that stores like JB raise their prices on a lot of stock before a sale as Kmart have been doing that for years now. I've noticed whenever they had a 15% off storewide sale that around 90% of dvds and games suddenly are close to full price again and as soon as the sale is over they drop their prices. I had a look at JB hi fi and couldn't find any decent blu rays that i wanted. More than likely they've been sold already or they've put the stock out back.

monkeychow Posted May 18, 2008 Posted May 18, 2008 I'm over JB. Of the two stores near me...the store at Southland charges $3-5 more per BD than the frankston site...i guess due to shopping centre rental...but its still annoying. They need to change their hiring policies...its only boys that will see you equipment (and god knows I've sometimes had to stand there waving around fistfulls of cash before they come over as I don't look like the type to have a HT system), and if you buy a CD or DVD its only ever these rude girls behind the counter who have no concept of customer service or even basic manners it seems. I'm saying this from multiple experiences too..not like its a one off. I'm voting with my feet from now on.

These days I tend to import much of my music, and in many cases movies, like wise I find the management/staff at several EzyDVD outlets have similar mannerisms to the JB staff.

Yep not wrong there Spearmint and like you I also import most of my music/movies, I just can't be bothered with the extremely rude unhelpful staff. Which is unfortunate as it means Australian stores are missing out on sales.

It is unfortunate, and normally I’m all for supporting local industry, but instead of putting up with rude unhelpful staff in many cases with a major attitude problem, if there’s something I’m chasing I’ll spend my money elsewhere before helping keep these ‘people’ employed. Don’t get me wrong there are a few nice and helpful employees in these stores, just few and far between IMO.

I've had mixed results from JB staff - some are helpful, some are honest enough to admit they don't know the answer. I find JB good for a browse, and the occasional impulse buy. I import most of my music from the UK through a mix of independent websites and some e-bay stores because they stock what I (mainly progressive rock and 70s/80s rock) want and on average are well less than half-price (even including shipping - which typically takes less than a week from UK too). As for the topic itself, I have struggled to motivate myself to replace existing SD-DVD's with Blu-Rays and so until some more Pixar movies or the real blockbusters make it out I'll keep my wallet to myself.

And looking at their share price they must be pulling in the money I agree totally with you thou I waited 10mins while 2 chaps were chatting up one of the female staff who had enough stainless steel or what ever attached to her face that would set off any metal detector cheers laurie
SDL Posted May 18, 2008 Posted May 18, 2008 Must say I was happy with the service at Southland today. Picked up 3 and did my standard turn upside down and listen for any sound of disc moving about. Apocalypto moved and rattled. The girl opened, inspected the disc, looked fine but told me to bring back if I wasn't happy. She also replaced the cover as there was a broken piece of plastic floating about.
broadbean Posted May 18, 2008 Posted May 18, 2008 That's the nice thing about BDs - it's meant to include a layer of disk protection.
KPL69 Posted May 18, 2008 Posted May 18, 2008 I noticed there were some titles marked down to $24.95. I picked up three of those in their B2G1F sales which worked out to $16.63 each!
klokwerk Posted May 18, 2008 Posted May 18, 2008 KPL, that was a lucky move on your part. Those $24.98 titles aren't supposed to be in the B2G1F. I might try and pick up the few Disney $24.98 titles I want, see if they notice or not.

These are the titles I picked up (I'm not sure whether these are Disney but they were in the main BD display) King Arthur Crimson Tide Enemy of the State I was mindful not to pick up any of the animated ones though that were obviously Disney
