2Brix Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 To buy or not too buy. Was in Tokyo earlier this week and noticed PS3 40G models selling for 39,980 Yen (not much more than $420 Aussie). An Asian region PS3 may suit me, and i would intend to primarily use for Bluray DVD playback (rather than gaming). Would anyone suggest reasons not to buy a PS3 from Japan, other than the warranty risk if noisey fan or other issue ?
Arecsa Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 Apart from the warranty risk there isn't any downside to it, except it isn't region free for dvds. But it's much cheaper than buying one here and you're in the best region, A, for Blu-ray.
Elmo1 Posted May 17, 2008 Posted May 17, 2008 (edited) On the topic of buying PS3's overseas. I have been contemplating on buying one from playasia but the 110V concerns me as some people say it is fine by using an australian power cord (internalmulitvoltage power supply) and others, including playasia, say that I will need a step down converter. Which one is it? Edited May 17, 2008 by Elmo1

I reckon $130 bucks more is worth the Aus warranty but then being Region A for blu-ray is also worth more cause of the cheaper discs over there. Plus getting it for $550 again means you probably got to wait till Christams when competition between stores is high. If I had to buy a Ps3 right now I would go for Japan/USA version cause of price and blu-ray region locking. does anyone know if the USA prices are any good ? Edited May 17, 2008 by tvbert
Craigus Posted May 17, 2008 Posted May 17, 2008 A negative of a japanese console is the X / O button swap. You get used to it though (I've got a 60GB Japanese).

The PS3 does not need a stepdown converter. Mine is currently using an old kettle cord as its power cord.

Mine is currently using an old kettle cord as its power cord. thanks Aresca, I don't want to sound like I don't believe you, I just want more people to confirm that this is definitely the case. I'm just getting conflicting feedbacks from diff sources that's all. I really want a white one but at the same time, it will work out more expensive (than a local with warranty) and have an extra 'thing' there if I really do need a step down converter. Thanks.

You get used to it though (I've got a 60GB Japanese). is it tha same as the psp? when you're going through the PS3 menu, it is swapped. But when you actually get into a game, it goes back to 'normal' X/O configuration?
ministry Posted May 17, 2008 Posted May 17, 2008 (edited) If you are going to get an asian machine make sure it is the hong kong version as the japanese one has a built in censor chip to take out blood in some games like drakes fortune and resistance which can be bypassed using an american save but on drakes fortune it can't. I think for the money I'm saving...I can deal with a little less/no blood. Not really my type of games anyway. I'm more worried about easy compatibility with use in Australia. (no step down converter) Edited May 18, 2008 by Elmo1

I have 3 of them from OS and they are 240v, as stated just need an Aussie cord Edited May 18, 2008 by Cap'n Jack
tvbert Posted May 18, 2008 Posted May 18, 2008 So when you say OS that is the Jap version and the USA version ? Cause looking on ebay america people selling the Ps3 for under $400USD with post.....which is not bad at all.

djmm Posted May 18, 2008 Posted May 18, 2008 Yes, you can get a 40g landed for around 5 to 520 from Play asia How did you calculate that? From my calculation, it was around 560 or close to 600 bucks if you use better shipping method... making me think twice about getting imported one (versus buying Aus version one).

Doing it now I see US$449 + 56.40 shipping. Their website currency converter says that's A$485 + $A61 = A$546. Plus you'll get a crappy exchange rate on your credit card most likely too.
