andys Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 I was looking at either the Samsung F8 46" or the Sony 46X. I know the in's & out's of the Sony, but I don't know much about the Samsung. A few questions for F8 owners: Does the F8 do 1080/24p? Can you switch off DeNile? (I had a Samsung panel I had a few years back & you couldn't switch it off & it was a real pain in the butt. It was very slow to react when going from bright scenes to dark scenes). Can it be switched off on all inputs? Is the sound quality any good? 2 x 10w doesn't sound like very much. Can you switch off the Blue light below the panel? (Does it go off when you turn the TV on?) Is it an 8 bit panel or a 10 bit panel? What are the basic pros & cons of this TV? Why would you pick the Samsung over the Sony? Any questions you can answer would be appreciated. Andy
GP11 Posted May 17, 2008 Posted May 17, 2008 I'm in the same boat andys.. also looking at Sony 46X3100 or Samsung 46 F8 There are some good prices on the F8 ie., Samsung 46inch F series $2600 before cashback, Myer Tuggeranong (ACT) posted here earlier.. When you include the cash back and 3yr warr it does look attractive. I spent 1/2 an hr at JBs this morning comparing the F8 and X46 and after fooling with both panels it was hard to pick a winner.. Maybe f8 more detailed, but sony had better contrast.. !!?? all subjective. My question.. has the latest firmware improved the 100Hz motion flow on the F8? as I know lots of ppl were turning it off. Or.. is it worth waiting for the supposed "Hdtv's Will Get Stupidly Cheap in May" ? Looking forward to a F8 owners comments.

Sound quality is okayish.. just decent i would say.. i use my hoome theater speakers anyway.. 3. Let me check up on that.. ive seen that Dnie can be switched off at times.. and sometimes it can't.. i'll get back to you on that.. 4. Blue light can be switched off/on/standby/always on at your own wish.. 5. not sure about 8bit or 10bit panel. 6. Pros: Its a great tv.. awesome blacks and picture quality.. quite cheap for its price and 3 year warranty.. and ofcoures the regular.. can do 1080p etc.. way cheaper than the bravias.. if you get it by 31st may... you could get your blu-ray player bd-p1400 for only like 250$ or so... Cons: Motion plus is yet to develop and its just okay at the moment. The latest firmware 1013's motion plus settings is much better than what it was before. on medium while watchin FTA.. i have had no problems with it.. i do find a difference with the motion plus on and off.. and i prefer it to be on. but watching blu-rays on low.. every 2-3 mins.. the picture judders for approximately 0.05 seconds.. it would be hard to miss.. but you can still notice it.. but this judder can be removed by just putting motion plus on off. im unlucky in this respect.. my window faces the F8 directly. .and hence i have some reflection issues. .but that's the problem with my window.. so it shouldnt worry you too much if you have a proper direction to keep your F8 at... The Samsung is in my price range at the moment & the Sony isn't. I checked out the Samsung today & it looked pretty good, although I noticed a lot of reflections, which weren't on the Sony's??? I'm sure the Sony's will drop in price as there new models come out. Might hang out & see what end of financial year bargains there are on both.

I noticed reflection when looking at these at the stores but I don't notice any when at home. On a bright sunny day with all the blinds open I still cant see any reflection.
MACH1NE Posted May 17, 2008 Posted May 17, 2008 guys do use reckon there will be a improvement on the 100hz issue with samsungs coming a650/a750 models?
Liamh80 Posted May 17, 2008 Posted May 17, 2008 guys do use reckon there will be a improvement on the 100hz issue with samsungs coming a650/a750 models? Hey, I have had my sammy for 2 months now, and it is such an enjoyable piece of equipment to use. I rate them highly, and also the motion plus feature. It's great when watching fast action movies or sports, with very little eye strain to focus on what exactly is happening on-screen. I think the motion plus/flow will be a benchmark quality soon, with potential buyers and sellers promoting this feature heavily on sale or resale. Thumbs up to Samsung for the quality of the panel so far, however customer support could be better. Keep this in mind too if you are looking for a sammy. Liam.

Well reflections are very minor.. thats only if your TV is basically facing hte window head on.. otherwise shouldnt be a problem at all.. but its still very minor..
Guest Krushull Posted May 20, 2008 Posted May 20, 2008 I gotta say I'm rarely happy with anything I fork out over $2500 for but this TV is just awesome. With the new firmware you really can't fault it.
