Cret Posted May 11, 2008 Posted May 11, 2008 Hi guys - found your forum after googling for problems with my LG recorder. Had it 17months and it's already been repaired twice, once for the fan, and second time the whole DVD drive was replaced. I love this machine as it does just what I want but seems pretty unreliable sadly. Last night the output to the TV suddenly went off for no apparent reason so I tried rebooting everything (amp/telly/hdd etc) and found when the power button on the LG is pressed the display shows the normal "HELLO", followed by "PLEASE WAIT". This second message just repeatedly scrolls across the display and nothing else happens apart from HDD nise & fan noise or possibly DVD drive noise. I've found loads of great info about upgrading firmware and stuff like that, but it needs to be able to play a disc to do so and this machine is currently an expensive but useless lump of metal! I'm happy to tackle things myself where I can, so if anyone has suggestions as to what may have gone wrong or where to start with this I'd be very grateful, thanks. Cheers, Jim
I am not a duck Posted May 11, 2008 Posted May 11, 2008 Ahh yes - the dreaded "please wait" - caused by I believe a handshaking issue with all the bits not talking to each other in the correct sequence on start-up. Fixed a 2 year old RH7521W model with this problem by replacing all the power supply capacitors - pure arse - it was going to the tip otherwise. Find yourself a good LG asc - if you're "lucky" (pun intended)
Cret Posted May 11, 2008 Author Posted May 11, 2008 Really? That's interesting! Must admit it's a long long time since I've been doing stuff like soldering components in & out of boards and I'm not entirely convinced I'd do a good job of it given how out of practise I am but it could be worth a try. How do I tell which ones would need doing & how is it caused by the capacitors in question? I'm probably being stupid here but what's asc? Thanks for the reply

Thanks for the reply I replaced all the capacitors in the power supply. This is called a "shotgun" approach. Even though I have an ESR meter for testing capacitors, I couldn't be bothered since the owner had given up on this unit anyway and it was destined for the tip. If you attempt this, the capacitors should be 105°C temperature and low ESR rated for switched mode power supplies. My assumption is the capacitors go below spec which raises the noise level on the various supply lines leading to timing errors or data corruption during the boot phase of the machine. asc is acronym for authorised service centre Edited May 11, 2008 by M'bozo
Cret Posted May 11, 2008 Author Posted May 11, 2008 Ahh, I see. Not sure I'd be able to identify the correct ones and get suitable replacements. Even then I guess it might not even be that even though it did the trick for you. I think what I might try first is a grovelly letter to LG saying how much I love it and love their brand but how the three failures with this particular piece of kit have made me lose faith a bit and how it could be restored by them arranging to fix it for free..... Miracles do happen as it worked when I tried it with JVC and they're notorious for customer service. Thanks for the information anyway - it's much appreciated.
