Guest Lichbane Posted May 11, 2008 Posted May 11, 2008 (edited) Folks, Bear with me folks, as I'm a bit of a newbie around this technology ... I've been looking at the Samsung PS50P91FDX vs Panasonic 50PZ700A 50" Plasmas and I have to say I'm a little confused. I've read the Pana is a better model, but when I checked them out at JB's, the Pana was has a massively grainier picture quality. Can anyone clue me in on what is the pros and cons of each and which one would be a better buy ... considering the quote I have puts them at the same price. Or should I wait for the 50PZ800A with it's 15K contrast ratio ... and will it put it on a par with the blacks you get on the Pioneer PDP508XDA. Damn ... the more I look at these TV's the more confused I get. Edited May 11, 2008 by Lichbane
Guest Lichbane Posted May 11, 2008 Posted May 11, 2008 Oops ... amended my original message. I got the numbers mixed up. Either way I'm talking about the 1080p 50" models for the Pana and Samsung.
brettenator Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 I'm also considering one of these two and would like to know whether it'd be better to wait....
jarthel Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 wait for panasonics Pz800 series... inmho it will be more expensive though
Guest Lichbane Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 it will be more expensive though Yup. Around $4,000 according to the guy at JB's
PominSydney Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 I would recommend having a good read of the dedicated threads relating to both of the plasmas, so you can get an idea of what they are like. I personally have the Samsung P91 and absolutely love it ... I don't think you can go wrong with either plasma. For me I would be buying a cheap plasma now rather than waiting for a new version which clearlywill be more expensive ... if something is 60% more money .. is it 60% better ... I would doubt that. I would rather buy a plasma now and then spend the rest on an amp and speakers ... that really makes a cracking cinema experience. My 2c

I agree Lich, I have heard rumours of the Samsung getting pretty hot, but the Pana is too Dark and I agree it looks grainy when not playing Blu Ray or good HD at 1080i or 1080p. Neither will be on par with the Pioneer it is like a mercedes compared to a holden or ford. For $ I would go with the Samsung if you can't afford the Pioneer. That is just my opinion after having looked closely at all three for a few months now. Chris P
iron99 Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 i have a choice between: Pana TH50PZ700A (may be able to get it at $2700) Samsung PS50P91FDX Samsung LA46F81 Sony Bravia KDL 46'X' major uses will be ps3 gaming, watching foxtel, sport and dvds/blueray can anyone suggest the best option, thanks.

Chris P I don't agree with the mercedes to holden or ford comparison between the 3 plasma. The only advantage that Pioneer has over the other two is in its contrast and possibly video processing with SD-DVD but otherwise its slim advantage over the other two does not warrant the extra $2000 plus. Samsung has pretty poor video processing build in but if you ever put a good scaler or a good upscale dvd player to play SD-DVD you will be surprise how good Samsung really is and how tiny difference between Samsung and Pioneer really is despite their huge price difference. With a good scaler the difference between the 3 plasma is more like a Toyota, mazda and Honda comparison.

Damn ... the more I look at these TV's the more confused I get. Samsung has better picture quality than Panasonic but out of the box you will find Panasonic has better colour than Samsung. But once fine tune Samsung has better PQ than Panasonic. Contrast wise Samsung is just as good as the lower end Pioneer Plasma but it does not match the higher LX series plasma form Pioneer. I would go along with Samsung and looking for better video sources such as BD player, upscale dvd player such as Oppo or dedicated scaler.

Does a PS3 Qualify. I plan on getting on getting one along with the plasma. From what I've seen (admittedly on a Kuro) it does a reasonable job upscaling DVDs, but will it be good enough for the Samsung?
