pgdownload Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 Hi, We're not too sound sophisticated and are looking to get a simple convenient system with a nice strong speaker output (big open space room). We have the music stored on an iPod and can line in to a system that really only need to have a good AM/FM radio (ie cd player optional but nice). Was looking at the tivolli model 2 with subwoofer ($1000) but the tangent mcs-600 from encel also looks nice ($900=>$500). I realise these units are way beneath most regular posters here but wondered if anyone had any comments on either of these systems or perhaps something else that I've not yet found? $1000 is about my price limit. Regards Peter Gillespie
Jeffie1503561482 Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 These look good - 40w rms x2 http://www.carltonaudiovisual.com.au/?q=node/view/925
geoff888 Posted May 10, 2008 Posted May 10, 2008 Hi Peter, ipod and Hi Fi are oxymorons Have you considered connecting your ipod to an amp/receiver and speakers of your choice (may need an ipod dock but some newer amps can be connected directly). That way you are not limited and can upgrade or mix and match any component along the chain. A good budget stereo receiver is the Marantz PM4001, then may be the Tannoy Mercury F1 or F2 should more than bring you under $1000 if you bargain (oh and don't forget stands). They will give much better sound than all-in-one micro systems. However, they are small speakers and a 2x30W amp may not totally fill a large room. More suited to smaller rooms. Need to spend a little more for more powerful amps and larger speakers.
???? Posted May 12, 2008 Posted May 12, 2008 Something like this will sound pretty impressive, especially if you fill your iPod with lossless audio. At $700 you'll likely have some cash left over... http://www.coemaudio.com.au/Packages-and-B...nd-Bundles/204/ All you would need to add is a stereo line out dock like this: http://aloaudio.com/store/catalog/index.php?cPath=21_39 (although I'm sure you'll find decent quality at a cheaper price!) I purchased a Kingrex T20U + PSU from Coem about 8 months ago, which I run a Macbook Pro into via USB, then out to Quad 12L bookshelves. Sound is far beyond my expectations - don't get too wound up in the 'must spend more' mindset. I found Coem Audio great to deal with, and they will let you 'try before you buy' so if you're not into it - just send it back. I haven't heard the JohnBlue speakers myself, but highly reccommend the Kingrex gear. There are many other speakers that would suit it well. Bear in mind that there is no remote and limited inputs (varies depending on the unit you purchase). If this is the sort of system you might be into, it's well worth reading the reviews linked to on the Coem link I provided... Hope you find a suitable solution!
Andre281503560612 Posted May 12, 2008 Posted May 12, 2008 I have a friend in a similar boat. He is currently using regular package deal PC speakers, but wants to add something better. I think he has a max budget of $500, which need to include amplification and speakers. I suggested the Logitech z-5500, but also thought he might be better using the whole budget on a 2.0 setup. How would the Z-5500's compare to the Akimates? Anything else out there in <$500 land?
petetherock Posted May 12, 2008 Posted May 12, 2008 May I suggest you buy direct from John Blue in Taiwan - Dared MP 5 for USD 250 plus shipping. It is the same as the Fatboy sold locally for 700. Add a pair of speakers with the change. Google for his contact.
