whamcs Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 Hi Guys, I may just have some dodgy wireless in my PS3 (two weeks old), it works, but is very slow. For example, to download firmware v2.30 took approx 3.5 hours. As a comparison, to download from my hard wired PC took 8 minutes. Initially I through it was an incompatibility between my Apple airport extreme base station (at back of house) and the PS3. So I then pointed the PS3 to the wireless access point on my Bigpond 6520 router (front of house). Same problem, very slow downloads and dropped connections. Signal strength to the airport was 95% and 75% to Bigpond wireless router. I was using WPA encryption on both. So in frustration I got one of my old Linksys access points and set it up in bridge mode (client mode, WPA encryption), bound it to the MAC address of the apple Airport and plugged it into the Ethernet port on the PS3. My god what a difference! Running a speed test through the PS3 web browser at www.ozspeedtest.com I’m now getting 384kb/sec downloads. This is as fast as my hard wired PC. Accessing the PS3 store is now very snappy. Not only that, the connection to the NAS that I stream DIVX ‘s from runs like grease lightening. So if you have slow wireless, try either plugging in ethernet or use an access point in bridge mode. I'm not convinced that anything is broken in my PS3, just some sort of wireless incompatibility issue. Regards, Stephen
MC DUI Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 My PS3 doesn't even seem to detect my router's wireless signal, despite my Wii, PSP, and DS having no problems? I've bought an ethernet cable for it but I haven't hooked it up as yet.
ledge Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 Personally ive never liked Wireless routers. Im still running a Netgear wired router. Has worked perfectly ...for the both PCs I use, the laptop and the PS3.

Hi Stephen, I only purchased my PS3 last week and I have experienced the exact same problem. I have a second PC in my house that uses the wireless as well and that performs at full speed, it's just the PS3 that seems ridiculously slow. I'm thinking of routing an ethernet cable under the house as it takes far too long to download anything from the PSS or anywhere else for that matter. The 2.30 firmware update took a good hour or so whereas on my primary PC in downloaded in a few minutes... Anyway, just wanted to let you know that you're not alone!

PS3 wireless sux. Perhaps this is because of a lack of a visible antenna?
drclaw Posted May 10, 2008 Posted May 10, 2008 Same experiences here. PS3 wireless sux.Perhaps this is because of a lack of a visible antenna? My wireless works fine - I stream 720p movies from my server to the PS3 and it works a treat. It maxes out at about 25Mbps though. Have you tried setting your wireless access point to G only? I had issues when mine was B and G, and it was much quicker when I went straight to G. Plus the usual - making sure your access point is on a channel not used by anyone else etc. Maybe your PS3 is in a place where it's picking up another network on the same channel?

Hey claw what wireless router do you use and what distance is it from router to ps3? I'm looking for one at a distance of about 10- 15 m but the reviews i read on wireless routers are all mixed and gets me very confused, thinking aout getting a netgear wpn824.
Riggi Posted May 10, 2008 Posted May 10, 2008 My wireless works Ok connecting to my Netgear DG834G adsl modem/router. Can stream video without any problems. I do find it is quicker though with a wired network connection when I'm browsing the web or in the PS Store. Most obvious was on youtube. Wireless it would take ages (sometimes 10 seconds or longer) for a the "Do you wanna run the plugin" prompt to come up everytime I play a video. With the wired connection it comes up almost straight away. I just run a long network cable now as I'd rather the speed and live with the cable running from room to room.
suldaman Posted May 10, 2008 Posted May 10, 2008 i had many problems with my wireless with an old bigpond router. Mainly problems with media server. After getting a new router from bigpond, never had any problems.
T800 Posted May 10, 2008 Posted May 10, 2008 how do u find out what speed you are getting downloading via PS3??? Currently Im running wireless for my laptop and PS3. Laptop is twice as fast downloading when I connect Ethernet cable. As for PS3 , was about the same. Took me about 4 hrs to download GRID last night which is about 900MBn and thats on Optus Cable..
whamcs Posted May 10, 2008 Author Posted May 10, 2008 Hi Dazbug, From the PS3 web browser go to www.ozspeedtest.com and click on the 15mb image link on the right hand side. It will ask you if runnning java script is ok. Answer yes. It will then download an image and display the download speed. Regards, Stephen how do u find out what speed you are getting downloading via PS3???
whamcs Posted May 10, 2008 Author Posted May 10, 2008 (edited) Thanks for all the feedback guys, I appreciate it. It really does seem to be a bit hit and miss to get a good wireless connection. Some of the guys I work with who also have PS3's have no issue at all with their wireless. I have two wireless access points in the house set up for 'roaming', same SSID, different channels (channels 1 & 6), same WPA key, the client locks onto the one with the strongest signal. In the case of the PS3 it can see both channels so you can select which access point to connect it too (I've tried both) Turnng off 'b' mode is a good suggestion, my problem is if you do that the Wii won't be able to connect as it will not work in 'G' only mode. I also have a new Telstra 'Two Wire' access point sitting in a box, so I might give that a go, third time lucky... In the mean time, using a Linksys access point in bridged mode has solved all my wireless issues, I've got fast internet access from the PS3 and can stream 720p video over wireless. It's still frustrating however that I would have to go to these lengths. I'll keep looking into the wireless issue and report back. senverse Posted May 11, 2008 Posted May 11, 2008 Sorry if this is too off topic but can anyone tell me how long the first charge for the wireless controller should be. Is it like a mobile phone where the first time charge is around 16 to 20 hours?
X-phile Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 From the PS3 web browser go to www.ozspeedtest.com and click on the 15mb image link on the right hand side. It will ask you if runnning java script is ok. Answer yes. It will then download an image and display the download speed.Regards, Stephen I too found the wireless connection to be deplorable... So I soon snapped up some ethernet cable for a direct feed. According to the speedtest, using the OptusNet Mirror, I'm getting a line speed of 1.74Mbps and downloading at 218KB/s. Complete noob to the world of PS3, but I gather those are respectable figures?
bennobee Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 I found PS3 sucked for wireless but once I went and boosted the signal strength from the router I stopped getting drop outs watching movies and downloads are fine now.
mickmick Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 I was the in the same boat and couldn't get the wireless going so just went wired, then when i finally got my laptop going wireless i found the ps3 hooked up through the laptop which means 1 less cable around the house. My line speed is 3.22Mps and download speed is 403Mps. Not sure if this is real good as i'm meant to have ADSL2. Anyone doing much faster?

On ADSL2, my download speed via wireless on my PC is usually about 12000kb/s. I think this translates to 1.5 MB/s. The PS3 seems to have a much slower download speed. Downloaded the burnout demo (800+ MB) last night which took 45 minutes, presumably averaging 0.3 MB/s only. Used a wireless connection for this. Seems a bit too slow to me. Anyone else having the speed?
