wolfmanoz Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 (edited) Ok I'm on a limited budget & have decided to buy a HD Dvd player (yeah leave it late lol) So I've seen E1's EP10's & XE1's advertised for varying ( and dizzying) amounts. What's going to give me the best "bang for my buck" at a reasonable price ? Also anyone with a good drive to sell is welcome to contact me if the price is right. Oh..I forgot to mention that I have built up quite a collection of HD titles as I also got the HD add-on drive for the Xbox360 (picked up a cheap box with RROD & fixed it for $3- & paid $60 for the add-on). Just want something a little "quieter" lol What's wrong with my avatar..it's all in the mind ;-) ? Edited May 8, 2008 by wolfmanoz

AndrewW Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 you have probably left your run a bit late. If you really want to get into it at this stage, the EP10 is the best bang for your buck. But the HD DVD titles are starting to dry up, and if you are on a tight budget then you may find it difficult to build a decent collection before the disappear completely. Oh, and I'd suggest changing your avatar before the mods change it for you ...

Oh, and I'd suggest changing your avatar before the mods change it for you ... I started my HD DVD Run two weeks ago and I believe I got in just in time. I was able to get 300, planet earth, bourne trilogy, oceans trilogy all the harry potters and a number of other titles (totally 21) for $210. Sadly Ezy dvd has only got Rio bravo/nacho libra. harry potter left, Ebay prices are going up and players are scarce. I to would recommend a Blu ray player to be honest
Scorchie™ Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 Your avatar is inappropriate; it has been removed. Do not re-add it.
the_wonderchild Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 you mention that you have built up quite a nice collection of titles; could you give an approximate figure on this number? If you have an amount that you believe will be suffice to last you your viewing days (or until the next big thing), then i'd hunt high-and-low for an EP-10. If however you've got a smallish sample of titles, you'll probably be hard pressed to find any extra ones locally and hence (unless willing to pay big bucks) should focus on anything Blu-Ray from now, because after all, you've still got a great addition in the 360 add-on drive.
wolfmanoz Posted May 8, 2008 Author Posted May 8, 2008 Thx for the input..I've prolly got around 50 titles including a few box sets (like Planet Earth, Blade Runner) so I suppose I really need to weigh up if it's worth spending $300 plus for another player (albeit one that upscales std DVD's) or as you suggest, wait for the next "big thing". OK I'm still open to reasonable offers if anyone wants to shed an EP10 ;-)
peterjcat Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 You might also want to consider a combo player... you'd have to import one from the US but the LG BH300 should be available next month, it'll be BD Profile 2.0 as well as playing all your HD DVDs. I've got the BH200 and it's surprisingly good, bitstreams all the audio codecs, is now region-free for SD DVDs (with great upscaling) is BD 1.1 with the possibility of 2.0 (allows external storage and has internet connection) and you can change the BD region back and forward with a remote control sequence. I was in your position with about 50 HD DVDs and an E1; this has been a good machine for the transition to BD and the E1 is now the backup. Not for everyone, but another possible avenue.

Although i have an E1 in my bedroom and it is a rock solid player, if you could pick up one cheap i would not over look it depending on your display device, on our older 66 LCD i noticed bugger all difference between the EP10 and E1. The XE1 is definetly a much better player but at $3-400 more than Ep i dont think it is worth it. My2c Edited May 9, 2008 by achjimmy

wolfmanoz Posted May 10, 2008 Author Posted May 10, 2008 Thx for the advice..sounds like an EP10 is the go ! On the track of one thx to Yorac
theslydog Posted May 10, 2008 Posted May 10, 2008 Thx for the advice..sounds like an EP10 is the go !On the track of one thx to Yorac There are still quite a few new EP10s in NZ for around the $300NZ so if u could convince them to send it to you that would be a better option than local ebay - which is currently like a shark feeding frenzy on EP10s and XE1s atm. tsd
sebbyr Posted May 17, 2008 Posted May 17, 2008 (edited) Just buy another Xbox HDDVD player and keep it in the box for a spare. There as cheap as chips if you can find one. Got mine from Harvey Norman Cairns for $47. Edited May 17, 2008 by sebbyr

Biz Posted May 22, 2008 Posted May 22, 2008 I've been using the LG BH100 'Super Multi Blu' combo player HDDVD/BD and it has exceeded my expectations. I've watched a few upscaled DVDs (choice of 576p, 720p, 1080i upscaling) and it's a lot better than 576i. Unless the xBox has a warranty, based on the number of these units breaking into the 'rings of death', that is probably the worst option. I have a xBox HD DVD unit too, and would appreciate tips on free or good value player software. I was thinking it would be a nice some-time second unit , attached to a new laptop. With laptops at $520+ (Compaq C774TU w. JB Hifi 10% off less $150 rebate) you have a new laptop + HDDVD player under $600!
