I have a strange problem with my HD-XE1, when watching a HD-DVD the display freezes and the audio continues to play.

It has happened a few times now at random spots, on different HD-DVD movies.

The only way around the problem appears to be to turn off the HD-XE1 and turn it back on.

Is there another other way to fix it.

Is there a way to bookmark where it happened and resume play at that point after powering back up.

I am running HDMI 1080i to a Plasma Screen and analog audio 5.1 to Yamaha 2500.

The XE1 is set to "Upto 1080i".

The firmware currently on the HD-XE1 is 2.7/T23T

Should I upgrade the firmware to 2.8. If so, where can I download 2.8 from, I presume I should be running HDDVDUsers firmware update.

Thanks

Wayne

I don't think that 2.8 is going to fix the problem, I'm running 2.8 on both of my XE1's and having random freezing problems, particularly on the newer one.

So, is this a common problem with the HD-XE1.

Never have these problems with the HD-A1 that I have, it plays the HD-DVD's flawlessly.

What work arounds do people use, when this problem occurs.

Has anyone investigated it fully to determine the causes of this.

Thanks

To be honest it is rare on the original one but happens quite often on the new one, I haven't had time to think about doing anything about it yet.

Can't say I've ever had this problem on mine (one of the first batch with the noisey fan)...... Touch wood......

I had a look briefly at AVSForum and could not see any discussions on this problem.

Does anyone have a link to AVSForum or any other forum that describes the problem in more detail.

I would think a problem like this, would be discussed extensively.

Or is it a problem with the Aus versions of the firmware.

Thanks

Wayne

I am still interested in know how people have worked around this problem.

Which firmware are you running.

The standard Aus firmware, the modified firmware, and which version.

As to the region free SD DVD aspect, I do not use my HD-DVD players to play SD DVD's, I have an OPPO DVD player for that purpose.

Thanks

3 months and although on second unit as drive started to act up I have never had a freeze be it on SD or HD DVD including playback and/or special features including web enabled features.

Always been on V2.7 though due to problems with 24p playback on 2.8. tried 2.8 and went back immediately. :D:D

Are u on HDMI as it could be HDMI handshake failure of some sort. You could try V2.8 and downgrade to 2.7 if it changes nothing. If component then I am at loss but do not run component.

I have the same problem, only on HDDVD playback not SD DVD. Where can I get the 2.7 firmware from. I have 2.8 after loading the 2.5 region free.

I upgraded to 2.8 and so far so good. Have not experienced the problem again, so hopefully it is resolved.

You have the same problem, picture freezes and sound continues.

Do you have any work arounds.

How often does it happen to you.

Could it be a sync problem with the display (mine is Fujitsu 50" Plasma, with HDMI, 1366x768 res).

Have you contacted Toshiba.

Thanks

I have no problem on my first machine. My second XE1 has picture and sound freezes. I rang Toshiba they told me to check firmware, which I have 2.8, they then asked me about whether it happens on SD DVD's as well. I tried on the weekend managing to get Star Wars IV to lock up, but not sure if it was because I was watching and pressed the on screen display button? Anyway tried a different HDMI cable, one I know works, tried some different settings in case it was a handshake of 1080P/24Hz to a non Full HD telly. Anyway, it still locked up so I am taking it into the service centre tomorrow. Let them work it out, it's under warranty. Best case I get a new one, second best the replace drive and laser, third best they can't fix it and give me my money back. Would prefer if it was the first one as that cost over a grand.

I put this in a pm to Wayne but I'll put it here too

I have this problem every now and then, with both of my XE1's, but not often enough to have contacted Toshiba.

It happens whether it's running into the plasma or the PJ so I doubt it will be a problem with the Fujitsu.

It is quite random and not disc dependent.

I'd go back to 1080i.

I was at a friends place and we had a problem with an HD-DVD disk that I'd been playing on my XE-1 without drama but it would not play.

We changed his back to 1080i, same as mine, and voila!!!

No problems at all on the XE1, SD and HD

Problems with SD discs on E1 freezing during fast forward, otherwise perfect for both

Both 2.8 f/w and region free.

Sorry, thought we were talking about the XE-1.

Anyway it was only that one time.

I have not had any issues on mine, touch wood.

Pretty sure we are, if that was a dig, I thought the above info may have been of use, as I have both machines.

Sorry to stray so far off topic.....

Me too.

My display (Fujistu 50" plasma, with HDMI port) only supports upto 1080i.

So it is only running 1080i.

Tried cheap to very expensive HDMI cables, currently using Xstream HDMI cable(very expensive).

Thanks

Tis all good. I just thought for a minute my comments were out of place.
