hi huys

Which AV reciever should i choose if im wanting to buy energy take classic 5.1 sat system

http://www.energy-speakers.com/v2/products...pecs.php?id=338

i was going to choose the onkyo 605 , but black is sold out in every JB in Perth.

Im willing to spend $900

and i want black to suit everything else in my livingroom

thanks

The 605 is probably the pick of the bunch in its price range. I have heard the take classics with a Denon receiver, I think it was a 1907 model and they sounded excellent, but the new Denons will be out of your price range. Have you heard them at your local dealer and what were they being driven by? You can usually get a good deal if you buy the speakers and receiver from one place, so it may be woth asking for a price

You may wish to consider the Yamah RXV 663 if it is within your budget. I got mine overseas for USD 400. Good amp

Yep I've seen the 663 at JB Hi Fi in Melbourne for $1099... I'm sure you could get it for 850-900 if you pushed hard enough.

i would get the 606 more input and prob better firmware, not sure if it has hit shelves yet?

May 15 apparently.

Yep that's what I've been told but it will have a RRP of $1499... so the 663 is a far cheaper option.

Particularly if you can get a 605 for just $680... Not a huge difference in them.

4 HDMI would be nice but a good quality switch box would only be $100-150.

Yep very true... only thing it comes down to then is if you want the new audio codecs eg Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio for the future.

605 has them already. No issue there.

whoops....my mistake. I guess I need to get my eyes checked again :P

For ~$680 vs ~$1300 that's a lot of coin for essentially incremental features (apart from the 4 HDMI which i consider very useful - i.e. the extr $100 needs to be factored in to the 605 price).

Anyway, I'm going to JB this afternoon. If I can get a black 605 for $680 I'll probably take it. If not I'll get a price on the 606. We're buying a 40" LCD for work too so I'll try and get a bit of a deal if I can.

OK recce today.

First JB - no service after we bought the TV - gave up - 606 was out and marked at $1277. 605 at $994

Second JB - 606 still in boxes marked $1277 - guy was reasonably helpful and offered $1100 without any haggling. Said $680 for the 605 was way below cost. Said his cost was around $760-800 range. Also gave $15xx for the Yamaha 1800

Wow - useless - 605 was marked at $1100.

Clive Anthony - useless - 606 wasn't on the computer. Reckoned he could sell "clearout" 605 for $50-60 less than the $994 ticket price

So those people getting 605s for $680 did a pretty good job.

Also went to Todds "Yamaha" Hifi who whilst nice weren't exactly that much use. Was good to be able to listen to a real system (Yamaha 863 + Yamaha 5.1 system) though...

Did you try JB Hi Fi at Ipswich, that's were I got mine. Absolutely no problem getting mine at $680. Given the current price of the 606, i might get a second 605, or if I can find a cheap one, a 705.

I suggest you have a read in the AVS forum over in USA, the link is in my review of the RXV 663 in the review section

can someone please explain to be this BTB and WTW issue with the Yamah RXV 663???

It may have them but I read that it is not streamed properly and doesn't work well.

"streamed properly"?

What does that even mean? The audio is bitstreamed to the Onkyo and the Onkyo decodes it. That doesn't even make sense. Where did you read this?

A bit out of my way (Brisbane northside), but I might give them a call. A 606 for A$600 in Singapore sounds good though if I can get over there again for work.

Are you based Brizzy northside? If so you could try Harvey Norman at Redcliffe or Morayfield or the Valley. I drive past a couple of JB's on my way to work, will pop in and have a look for you.

I got my gear from Living Entertainment, Caboolture, but they do stuff like Denon and NAD - very good but may be out of your budget.

It means it does not decode it as advertised. There are firmware updates in the US to address this.

"This update will address the product’s ability to decode the Dolby Digital, Dolby TrueHD, DTS HD High Resolution and Master Audio bit stream signals" quote from Onkyo website. That's what I mean!!

Try reading the article though:

What's so special about the Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD decoding? Theoretically, the benefit of having onboard decoding is that HD DVD and Blu-ray players could send these soundtracks to the receiver to be decoded, instead of the players needing onboard decoders themselves. Unfortunately, that's not currently possible. At the time of this review, there are no HD DVD or Blu-ray players that are capable of sending Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks in bitstream format. Instead, some (but not all) players decode these formats internally, and then send the decoded signals to attached receivers via HDMI (via uncompressed linear PCM) or multichannel analog-audio connections.

Since there are no players (to date) capable of feeding encoded Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks to the TX-SR605, the feature is only useful insofar as you are "future-proofing" your AV receiver. On the other hand, the TX-SR605 is offering all of these features at a price point that's far below that of its competitors, so you're essentially getting this feature for free.
