Hi, whilst i am waiting for my 508 to arrive i started thinking about power consumption. We all know plasma's etc use more power but is it really noticable on your power bill? Has anyone noticed dramatic differences in your power bill since your plasma/lcd was installed? Interested in your feedback! Thx Chicken

A bit too late to look at power consumption, isn't it ?

Anyway, the 508XDA is rated as using 369W peak (all-white screen). I'm sure the consumption is lower when displaying normal images and even lower if you like dark stuff. You won't be using it in "torch" mode so your average may be around 250W. This is the equivalent of 4 to 6 lightbulbs and assuming a daily usage of 4 hours max it's only going to add 10 to 15 bucks to your quarterly bill.

A quick perusal an it would seem that

for your average 50" Plasma you're looking at 350-400W (Your 508 is rated at 370W)

for your average 50" LCD you're looking at 200-250W

Your 36" CRT is about 250W as well.

Standby for both seems relatively negligible (<5W)

Assuming power charges at 16c/KWhr, TV on for 4 hours a day, 6 days a week (ie 1200 hours) then you're looking at a running bill of:

The 508: $71 per year

Plasma: $75 per year

LCD: $43 per year

CRT: $50 per year

And they call it FTA :) - Just some extremely rough figures.

PS An then I found this site  Its in US dollars and assumes 8 hours a day watching TV (gosh they watch a lot) at 11c. They rate the 508 at $116 per year but using the above assumption and Oz currency this translates to $82 per year here.

Well all those figures are interesting.

BUT I've noticed our power consumption has doubled for the same period last year.

Of course, it is not just the plasma, both the Elektra and Toppy 7000 are on 24/7.

The receiver and plasma and other devices get turned off when not in use although some are in standby mode and some power consumption is happening.

The bottom line, to my way of thinking, is that if you can afford this high-end equipment, then you can afford to pay for the power.

HOWEVER, if your are a greenie, then you have a problem. :D

Yes, closing the barn door after the horse has bolted is not a solution. :excl::P

Well you average PVR is 40W and a plasma left on 4 hours a day is only expending 350W/6 = 60W so your 2 gizmos could well be adding more to your bill than the TV itself.

No doubt about it in my mind :excl:;)

When your plasma is set up and you are watching it, power consumption will slip in priority.

And then there are the times when I come home to find one or more (record is four) TV's on, with nobody watching them. Keeps the cats and dogs entertained, I suppose.

I wouldn't be able to stand the noise.

That's the price you pay for decent black levels :)
I suppose if you're green inclined you could get good black levels by turning off everything at 1am :)

Good for everything except PVRs, DVDRs or VCRs, anything with timers...

Plasma’s only use their rated power with a full white screen at maximum brightness, average consumption is much lower.

I bet there are plenty of other things in the house that are sitting in standby/switched on at the wall. Turn them off and save the extra power your Plasma is drinking

I find it rather odd that people will be concerned about the $ their plasma or LCD is chewing up - it may ad $50-$100 per year to the total - yet they won't have a second thought about spending the same amount per month on pay TV

With energy ratings becoming mandatory and manufacturers working on models with similar brightness but less power consumption, the future will be "greener", and who knows, if they can commercialise large OLED screens, they'll fall even more.

I bought one of these remote controlled mains outlet devices from Jaycar.

http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?I...=&SUBCATID=

I bought one pack which includes the remote for ($40) and an additional power point without the remote ($25) because one remote will power off four different power points.

I've had it for a month and it works great. The remote must use radio frequency because you can power off the mains points in the family room and computer room from inside the master bedroom.

You can buy a similar gadget from Ebay but I sent my Ebay one back because it sh!t itself after a couple of tries.

Maybe I had too much stuff connected for it in the family room. (TV, PVR, AV Receiver, VHS, Dvd player, Xbox 360, Voip phone.)

Electronic appliances all use standby power unless you switch the power point off at the wall. If you have easy access to the wall point then that's fine but ours are behind a large entertainment unit in the family room and behind a large desk in the computer room.

Btw, it's not just the standby power saving issue here. It's also a safety precaution.

A house down the road had it's insides covered in soot when the owners went out for the night and left the stereo on.

The stereo must have been faulty because it shorted and the sparks started a smoldering burn on the carpet floor.

Every room in the house was covered in black soot, even their clothes in the wardrobes.

Fortunately the house never caught alight.

Well this is one reason why I like my LCoS rear pro, its 71 inches and it uses a average of 115W on a typical pic. I have forgotton what it uses on a black and white test pattern, I will test again one day.

As for my 40 inLCD it uses 243W.

Just to clarify, I am NOT concerned at all about cost of running it.Was just curious whether anyone ACTUALLY NOTICED an increase in their power bill after plasma was installed and running for a while. Whenever you mention 'plasma' to the uneducated they nearly all say get ready for your BIG power bill. So i was wondering if there is any truth to it. I dont care much about being green, (green electricity and carbon trading is a BIG scam IMO).

So far nobody has actually said they noticed the difference.
