BribieG Posted May 6, 2008 Posted May 6, 2008 Just watched Dubya's wife lambasting the Burmese government, standing at the lectern with the subtitle "Laura Bush, First Lady of the USA" and a couple of things occurred to me: If Hilary Clinton gets elected in November will Bill then be referred to as "First Man of the USA?" For the last couple of centuries the president has been addressed as "Mr President", as in "Mr President, if we let these Commo Mo'fo's get away with this our position in Cambodia will become untenable........" You have to admit that "Mr President" has a wonderful ring about it, almost as good as "Comrade Chairman if we let these Yankees..." However what about Hilary? Three choices would seem to be "Mrs President" (feminists would hate that) , "Madame President" (Sounds too French or Regal for a country that fought a war to get rid of the aristocracy), or shudder "Ms President" (Rednecks and Pentacostal Christians would never stand for that) All leave a lot to be desired. I wonder how they'll work it out.
The D-Train Posted May 6, 2008 Posted May 6, 2008 Maybe she can deny having sexual relations with "that man" (whomever that may be). Cigar anyone.

Veefy Posted May 6, 2008 Posted May 6, 2008 (edited) Interesting question! Under the hypothetical situation you have presented most bets are that Bill would be referred to as "First Gentlemen Bill Clinton". The first Gentleman title has been used already for situations to describe the spouse of female state governors in the US. The situation is a tad more complex in the case of Bill, as he could also be addressed as "Former President Bill Clinton" or more informally as Mr President (even though he doesn't hold that position anymore). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Lady_of_the_United_States Hillary would be referred to as "Madam President" (without the e) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mr._President_(title) Anyway this is all rather theoretical given that Obama will almost certainly get the Democratic nomination. Steve C Posted May 7, 2008 Posted May 7, 2008 (edited) Interesting question! Anyway this is all rather theoretical given that Obama will almost certainly get the Democratic nomination. It is an interesting question... Not as interesting as a lot of other questions people should probably concern themselves with - but, interesting none the less. I reckon you covered pretty well all of the possibilities for the nomenclature the Clintons would face if Hilary gains the Democratic Presidential nomination and subsequently goes on to victory in the National plebiscite. I do feel that the Americans may opt for describing Bill Clinton as "The Husband of the President" or "Madam President's Husband"... or maybe "that philandering perv with a penchant for gullible and impressionable girls willing to pander to his needs so they can further their own careers, who the President has stubbornly stood by despite how little he probably deserved it - given the humiliation his acts brought down upon every member of the family." For my money - Hilary IS exactly what the U.S. needs right now. She's felt the humiliation and come through it at the other end with greater respect being paid to her by many who would have written her off, for her never wavering (at least in public) determination and fortitude as well as her resolve. She is an example to many U.S. women who've felt the sort of betrayal she went through, of the fact that you don't have to be a victim and dignity is a damned fine thing to keep intact whilst so many others around you lose theirs. America needs the qualities she is fully conversant with in the coming years. Obama is certainly a breath of fresh air on the American political scene, but apart from his direct and obvious appeal to African Americans and Hispanics along with a smattering of 'white' voters - his appeal is novelty rather than of serious consideration for the task of "Captaining the Nation" out of many of the reefs and shallows that the Bush Administration has mindlessly steered the "Ship of State" into. If Hilary can take those States where the politics of race are less pronounced, and the politics of gender are far more pertinent to win the Democratic nomination, she'd absolutely cream the vote for President, simply off the back of the female vote... I don't think Barack has that kind of general appeal when it comes to the Federal sphere - and a Obama democratic nomination could well polarise the voting during the Federal poll, which could lead to a possible Republican return to the White House off the back of a much closer and more difficult to predict federal vote. It's my belief that the longer this Clinton/Obama tussle goes on, the likelier it is that Hilary will get over the line. Her experience is already showing that she is able to deal with the inevitable muck dredging and the various crisis's of an election campaign for such a prestigious position with the sorts of responses that are expected from a person who's asking voters to let them run the country. I even suspect that some of Barack's falterings in the face of a crisis (even though he may not have directly started them...) would be making even some Hispanics and Afro-americans a little nervous about handing the reigns over to him this time around. Won't it be just so much fun to see what happens - like I really give a crap in the end... As long as Kevin Rudd does his job as PM here in a way that we can be justifiably pleased with; I'm happy. I reckon Kevin has already shown whoever wins the U.S. Presidency, that the relationship with Australia isn't going to be the one that George W. had with John Winston H. - and that's the more important thing from my perspective, regardless of how Kevin will have to address the husband or wife of the next U.S. President.
