Ch33Ch Posted May 6, 2008 Posted May 6, 2008 G'day fellas, just wondering if anyone out there has had any problems with "burn-in" or image persistance" for a more technical term, on their lcd or plasma screens? It was brought up in conversation with a mate the other day and got me thinking. Since i spend hours at a time straight on my LCD screen and moslty playing the same games its got me wondering if this will happen eventually. I have a Samsung 46" LCD and have spent over 10 hours straight on it, it usually gets on average a good 10 hours of gaming per week. Has anyone had these problems and/or have them resolved? It would be good to have feedback from people with Brand of LCD/Plasma, Average hrs of gaming per week, and longest session from memory. and state any problems. Cheers guys.
3daysofrain Posted May 6, 2008 Posted May 6, 2008 Hey mate, funny you bring this up. I was thinking the same thing the other day as I had my 360 turned off, and my yamaha amps screen saver was on. I realised it had been static for an hour or so and i'm though, ooh, better switch it off just in case! I have a 32" Samsung LCD that gets probably about 2hrs a night gaming and maybe 10hrs or so on a weekend if bored. My LCD still looks as the day i bought it. No signs of anything.
Shonky* Posted May 6, 2008 Posted May 6, 2008 (edited) Discussed many times if you search. Not from gaming but my Panasonic 42PX7A plasma gets fairly noticeable image retention if I fall asleep and it drops back to the PVR menu. It takes some days to go and even then it's still a bit faint. I'm waiting to see if the most recent case disappears. And that's just from a few hours (admittedly was solid white text on a black background) LCDs are much more resistant to burn in. Almost completely resistant. But I prefer the look of the plasma screen over the LCD. Edited May 6, 2008 by Shonky*
3daysofrain Posted May 6, 2008 Posted May 6, 2008 Shonky, I'm thinking of updating my LCD soon to a 50" Plasma. How do the plas go for gaming? It would be for 360 mostly then HD-DVD.
bevancoleman Posted May 6, 2008 Posted May 6, 2008 I've not seen any image retention on my LX508 at all, even after hours of playing games. That includes Forza2, Crackdown, Lego StarWars, Halo3, etc... I did see some image retention after turning it off a movie that had a very bright symbol in the center of the screen (menu), but it faded as I watched. I've certainly NOT seen any burn-in (which is not the same as image retention)... you would really have to try hard to get that!
MC DUI Posted May 6, 2008 Posted May 6, 2008 I've got a Panasonic 50" 500A plasma which was used a fair amount for Xbox360 playing. I never once experienced any sort of image retention, I often played for around 8 hours in a row on games and had no problems. I did make sure that I 'broke' the panel in first by ensuring I watched everything on it at half settings for the first few hundred hours of operating time. Now I've also got a Panasonic 32" 700A and I've had no trouble with it at all, I use it solely to play my games consoles with sessions lasting up to 10 hours and I haven't noticed any possible image retention.
bevancoleman Posted May 6, 2008 Posted May 6, 2008 I have to say that most games are probably better then our DTV chanels. Games nearly always have transparrent HUDs and they try and keep it to a minimum. Also many games have HUDs that change depending on the situation, or disapear when you are between missions or tracks. DTV chanells will have solid and huge logos and/or bannels being displayed for ages Regardless, I've only ever seen a small amount of image retantion which faded after less then 30 seconds... and that was from a movie menu which we had left running.
Shonky* Posted May 6, 2008 Posted May 6, 2008 I haven't used mine for gaming, but I'm considering getting a PS3 for GTA IV. I don't see why it wouldn't be any good. I think you'll find the games these days are designed with it mind. The developers know it won't be a good look if their game starts to burn in on plasmas. After maybe 6 or 8 hours, I can still see the text on plasma from where it said 'The Simpsons'. It's faint and not noticable unless there is a light coloured uniform background (white is best). It will probably go away after a few days but it's disconcerting that's for sure. Fortunately, the latest Mythdora 5 release properly supports the DPMS functions so now it blanks after 1 minute if not playing a video. i.e. I shouldn' have the problem any more.
bobbyf Posted May 6, 2008 Posted May 6, 2008 I've seen IR on my LX508 after playing GT5 prologue You could still read the position and last lap wording, which is in the same place on every race. It went after a few minutes of normal viewing though, and since i enabled ORBITER, it's never happened again. I reckon you've got to be pretty unlucky to get serious IR or burn in these days. Bob
bevancoleman Posted May 6, 2008 Posted May 6, 2008 It went after a few minutes of normal viewing though, and since i enabled ORBITER, it's never happened again. That was about the first thing I turned on (in fact the installer made sure it was enabled), that may be why I've never had any issues.
AndrewW Posted May 6, 2008 Posted May 6, 2008 I may have had a 7 or 8 hour non stop session playing Blue Dragon on the weekend , and not a sign of image retention on my Bravia LCD.
Matty_T Posted May 6, 2008 Posted May 6, 2008 Our 60" LG Plasma gets a pretty good workout of DTV incl. 4:3 programs/sport/gaming and have never had a problem with burn in. I've read in places that it's less of a problem with newer screens compared to those of a couple of years ago.
ascl Posted May 6, 2008 Posted May 6, 2008 LCD's don't suffer from Image Retention (at all), and only in very extreme cases suffer burn in (I don't actually understand the physics of burn in on LCD's, but have seen some very rare reports of it). Plasma's are a little different. Image Retention and Burn In are possible, but with 100,000 hour 'half-life' on modern plasma's, Burn In is very nearly a non-issue (burn in occurs when some pixels are more worn than others, which causes a difference in their relative brightness). Image Retention I have seen only rarely, once after (accidentally) leaving the TV on with no signal (it had the channel number info pane up) for a couple of hours, and this went away in a few minutes. I have never noticed it after gaming, even with long stretches of playing the same game (5 hours in a single session on GTA IV). I think plasma's reputation for burn in and image retention is based largely on earlier models, and with current models its really not an issue.
midlife5 Posted May 6, 2008 Posted May 6, 2008 Ive got a older plasma (a 2 1/2 year old teac, the model everyone had trouble with, circuit boards packing it in) i would hate to add up the amount of hours me and my 2 sons have spent playing the ps3 and 360 on it, over a thousand i reckon and never had an image burnt in. The only time you see anything left on the screen is when a tv show isnt in 16:9 you get a black strip up each side which goes after a few minutes. cheers, peter.
Sicarius123 Posted May 6, 2008 Posted May 6, 2008 My mothers 2 year old Panasonic Plasma had never had burn in and they're certainly not careful, leaving DVD menu's on it, or the computer screen running. I don't really see many things that could burn in on modern games with my PS3, HUD are very minimalistic and usually have effects on anything that stays on screen to keep the image moving, or fade away until it's needed. I don't have any worries for my LCD anyway.

Pioneer fix this by putting gray bars on the sides which gets darker/lighter with thr scene. Along with it's orbitor, and since I have it in power saving mode (I don't need/want it any brighter anyway) I can't see that I'll ever have any issues with IR or BI
