Not sure if this is the right place to post...but here goes

Looking at getting a decent internet connection I am currently using 8mb no download limits for about $40 aud equivalent.

Last time I was in Oz I used a 3gb unwired connection and found I busted the limits in next to no time and it was slow and unreliable (even in the middle of Sydney)

Can anyone suggest a decent setup in Oz, will be in the Beverly Hills NSW 2209 area if that makes a difference.

Will also take a look on the whirlpool forum as well.

Thanks in advance

Not beign rude - but if you cant find your answer on whirlpool you wont find it :-)

Just wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions or opinions...one thing I've found is not all bb providers are created equal some are absolutely shocking, wouldn't want to find myself signed up to a contract I have to stick with and have poor service the whole time.

Whilrpool have a good BB selector - you put in your criteria then it tells you whats good.. - pick a few ISPs from the results

Have a look in the ISP's section on whirlpool to see if anyones saying anything good/bad about them - use the search too.. also google the isp and problem or issue.. eg google "ISP problem"

Should give you a pretty damn good idea. Then have a good read the ISPs fineprint to see what the gotchas are :)

Exactly, it's not always the cheapest which are the best. Some will try and hide the fact that the total DL limit includes on and off peak times, while others will lock you into a contract where you have to pay a fee to get out, and others will require you to connect your home phone with them etc. As a rule, Telstra is shockingly overpriced, Optus is OK but its the small providers who are the most competitive I found.

Edit: and you don't want to be calling India everytime you have a problem :)

I am in SA and can't recommend Internode highly enough...

Not the cheapest by a long shot but the service is excellent, stable and fast and the support is fantastic. I have really appreciated their 'callback' feature (and more than once) where your place is help in the queue and they call you back on any chosen number once they reach your place...

I have been happy with aaNet's ADSL, even though they have reduced the value of many of thier plans recently, they seem worth comparing/considering anyway.

Been on TPG for the last 9 months here in Regional Queensland no problems at all touch wood.

Our exchange does not have ADSL2 though.

Seemed like one of the better priced plans at the time and I do get 150kb/s downloads most of the time no problem.

Another vote for Internode here.

I have been using them at home for almost 4 years and we have 2 connections at work for almost 1 year.

Well, you can forget about that to start with. While getting 8mb with no download limits maybe possible, there is no way in hell your going to get it for $40.

So, assuming that your prepared to spend the $$$ and while every ISP can have issues at times, if its speed, uptime, etc that is most important, then again Internode tend to get the vote, you'll just pay a bit more for it.

Apart from that, your best bet would be to use broadchoice on whirlpool to get plans that fit your requirements and are available in your area and then on those that seem OK, check out the forum to see what issues maybe happening. And while sure, those with problems tend to post more then those that are happy, you can still see what the outcomes are and if those with issues are happy at the end of it all.

I myself use Lizzy. <Advertisement-soundalike warning!> You get 30 email addresses (?? This confuses me), with unlimited webmail storage. They have excellent Tech support (Australians), and provide all equipment setup, so it's basically a matter of plugging things in, setting up yourself some email addreses, and volia! You're away. Best plan for 8192k I could find was 5Gb for $69.95, although you can get 1500k with 10GB of downloads for $64.95. Linky. If you find that colour scheme offensive, then you can try Australia Online, same company, just a different name and colour scheme (In fact, I use Australia Online webmail because the Lizzy webmail is blocked where I work). <end advertisement soundalike>

Yep I'm probably going to churn back to them in the next week or so.

I use optus adsl2+.

Generally works pretty well and is quite fast.

Sometimes (rarely) can't connect but i think that's due to the router and/ or modem mostly.

Cheers for all the replies guys, much appreciated. Ended up sending a email to all the providers I was interested in, got a few emails back a few days later from some. Internode phoned me the next day and took me through the options. From the reviews I've seen of them they are more expensive than most but with decent customer service.

So signed up with Internodes ASDL service, just waiting for them to test their asdl2 kit at the exchange and will transfer over.

Thanks again
