migrane Posted May 4, 2007 Posted May 4, 2007 The latest Bing Lee catalog in our local paper lists the LG BD/HD-DVD player for sale at $1899. Didn't read when it was available - possibly now.

AndrewW Posted May 4, 2007 Posted May 4, 2007 Not. Agreed. It cost me a total of < $1200 for my HD-A1 and PS3, no way I'd drop $1900 on a dual format player. Andrew.
momaw Posted May 4, 2007 Posted May 4, 2007 I am very much against these joke players LG put out. All they do is harm HD DVD.
Tweet Posted May 4, 2007 Posted May 4, 2007 I am very much against these joke players LG put out. All they do is harm HD DVD. Well being an LG product it is only likely to last a year before failure so it really doesn't matter how much it costs ... it's problematic. C.M
laurie Posted May 4, 2007 Posted May 4, 2007 Just think though it could well be a collector item in a few years then you all be kicking yourself when Christies sells it for $50000 cheers laurie

laurie Posted May 6, 2007 Posted May 6, 2007 Noticed in the Bing Lee lift out in the Sun Herald the Blu-ray logo dominates the top of the player with the words HD HVD below it whats amusing are the words "Super Multi Bluray Player" on the disc tray cheers laurie

laurie Posted May 6, 2007 Posted May 6, 2007 That's bacause it isn't an officially licenced HD DVD player. hmmm sorry momaw for not being in the picture with this it states it supports Dolby True HD and DTS-HD I may have miss interrupt somewhere where you said it was not the full quid on HD-DVD because of the above audio formats! so its just the license issue but if it was licensed it would be the same player y/n? cheers laurie

So you couldn't even access the fancy HD DVD menus, you were just stuck with dodgy DVD style menus generated by the player. I was lead to believe that this new version fixes these problems though. Andrew.

diesel Posted May 6, 2007 Posted May 6, 2007 It still may entice a few to buy, given it's relatively competitive price - smack bang in the middle of the Samsung and Panasonic BD players
momaw Posted May 6, 2007 Posted May 6, 2007 It still may intice a few to buy, given it's relatively competitive price - smack bang in the middle of the Samsung and Panasonic BD players Which is my concern with this player. If you had no idea it was crippled for HD DVD and you bought some HD DVD discs and none of the features worked and the discs only had player generated generic menus, what would your opinion of HD DVD be in comparison to blu-ray?

Unfortunately most people probably don't research these things thoroughly enough to realise such things and will be left with bad impressions of the HD DVD format. I'm suprised the HD DVD camp has allowed LG to market this as it may damage their market?

They denied it certification and hence it can carry no logo's, but I don't think they can do anyhing more than that. Now if it carried the HD DVD logo they could take legal action, but it doesn't.
Tweet Posted May 6, 2007 Posted May 6, 2007 Somehow I think there would be limited demand for such a player at that price, and those that convinced themselves that it was a good buy simply deserve to be fleeced. Surely any reasonably intelligent person would at least get some valued opinion on the product before committing themselves to years of despondency. Indeed there would be many people who would simply buy on the expectation that a HD player that will play both formats will do it all. I know that sounds a bit negative, but to sell a product at such a high price with an 'illusion of HD compatibility' even if it states a vague 'HVD' on the case is just asking for a consumer backlash, an against LG. When the unsuspecting consumer of this product realizes he has been short sheeted in terms of HD DVD he is going to seriously ask questions why he wasn't informed by the salesman of its failings in compatibility. Sales people do have a responsibility to their customers especially when a product misrepresents the intended purpose for which it was bought. I can only see this product further enhancing the 'LG' label in the eyes of the discerning customer. Personally I think LG should recall the lot or sell it all off at a bargain price with a disclaimer. C.M
laurie Posted May 6, 2007 Posted May 6, 2007 C.M While I know where you are coming from at least give credit to LG for doing it. People said the same thing when Hyundai came out with the $13999 drive away car it forced other manufactures to bring their prices down and produce similar cars lets hope this may open the door for the likes of Denon to produce the perfect licensed universal player cheers laurie

T800 Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007 These are now out. Saw one at The Good Guys today, for a price of $1300. Was tempted to buy one, but reading reviews on it, the Blu-ray PQ is a notch below the PS3. Would be good for HD DVD playback as well. Interestingly it: 1. Offers all the new codecs on Blu-ray via 5.1 analogue only (except DTS-HD MA) 2. Offers all the new codecs on HD DVD via 5.1 analogue only (except TrueHD which is 2.0 only and DTS-HD MA) 3. Is Blu-ray region Free (from several posts Ive read from owners, but i haven't physically tested it myself) 4. Is 1080p/24
