neillh Posted May 4, 2007 Posted May 4, 2007 Hi all. Just wnated to know if there is a DVD recorder, with Hard drive AND a HD tuner out in the market at the moment. Why? Just bought a Sony 40'LCD with HD tuner built in and want to record in HD as well as play DVD's (upscaled). I have been told that I can't record from the LCD tuner in HD.

pgdownload Posted May 4, 2007 Posted May 4, 2007 Yep the question does pop up every 3-4 days it seems. Short answer is you can't record HD on a DVD (it will effectively be stored at SD picture quality). As an indication 1 hour of HD takes about 8Gb of space. If you want to record HD get a PVR Regards Peter Gillespie

If you read the OP I think that is what he is after. I have just bought a Panasonic DMREX75, which of course only has an SD tuner. It is a great unit but if it had an HD tuner it would be perfect. Even with only a 160GB HDD, that still allows 20 hours of recording which is fine for the kind of stuff my wife records, watches and then deletes the next day.
techo Posted May 4, 2007 Posted May 4, 2007 Build yourself an HTPC - seriously. My new one is way more powerful than even the most highly rated SD/HD PVR and alot easier to use and live with and less than $1000 all up. Full IR - 1080i HDMI - DL burner - 500gig SATA - Quad TV tuners (2 sat, 1 HD dtv, 1 analog) - 10/100/1000 802 networking, plus. (link in my sig for some pics). Sorry about my indulgence but I think an HTPC is the only commonly available media product in this country with HD turners and a DVD burner and enough grunt to properly cope with HD timeshifting, dual recording, and chase play.

Hi Techo, I have a Compro digital tuner in my computer If I install another digital tuner would it be better to have different brand to avoid conflict ? Would I be able to use the computer as a twin tuner PVR ie record two programs from different channels at the same time ? Knox

I have built several plain-vanilla PCs but am a complete idiot with HTPC. Please advise on the special parts (relative to a PC) one must/should have to make a HTPC, thanks.
