100% Posted May 3, 2007 Posted May 3, 2007 hey guys so im thinking about a new dvd player (the dse cheapy is starting to skip) and was just looking for some ideas... id like a HD but i cant afford one and my projector doesnt have the res to warrent one either. After a bit of searching i think and upscaling dvd player might be worth a go. as there what seems to be around. My question is can you turn that function off if you dont want it?? i was thinking around the $150 - $250 range do i stand a chance of getting anything decent?? so i'm looking for recomondations of what new, cool and works well thanks Nath
Wing Nut Posted May 4, 2007 Posted May 4, 2007 I can recommend Oppo - http://www.oppodigital.com/dv981hd/index.html http://www.oppodigital.com/dv970hd/dv970hd.html I sourced both of mine from Oppo itself in the USA. Quicker delivery than I've ever had with locally sourced stuff and excellent after-sales service. As for performance, read the numerous independant reviews. I find them great 'bang per buck'.

Wing Nut Posted May 6, 2007 Posted May 6, 2007 ive never heard of them, can they be seen local??A year or so ago someone here was importing them, but not displaying. The multiple reputable reviews, user comments here and the price sold me - twice! Neighbours brought a rental copy of 'Phone Booth' over last night after their DVD player kept dropping out. They couldn't believe I was simply playing the same DVD through just another player (Oppo DV-981HD). Sent them home with my older Oppo (DV-970HD) which should work fine with their 42" Hitachi. Good movie too.
RichardN Posted May 6, 2007 Posted May 6, 2007 I Believe Merlin Audio in Canberra are the only people able to sell these locally. EDIT: The Oppo that is.

Yes i have one and think it's a great player for the price, be glad to answer any questions you may have. Also check out the SonyDVPNS76H thread in the "Reviews of products" section.
Sean_Melb Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 Try Denon their entry level range - they are above your budget but ive always been happy with Denon
Shonky* Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 I'm in the same position. Looking to buy the Oppo DV981HD but at the moment I'm without a TV. Considering buying an LCD but I'm going to try to fix my CRT first. If I do that, then I can't use the full potential of the DV981HD since my CRT doesn't have HDMI (duh) and the Oppo doesn't have component. Might consider the 971 instead

mazman1503559902 Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 Ive got the dvpns76h, very happy with it. It can be bought local, can be seen at work at harvey norman, dick smith powerhouse, jb hifi, powerhouse have a 14days return policy if your not happy with it Its cheap, power house had it on special for $199 and without even bargaining, i got it for $180, does upscaling, has hdmi(doesnt come with the cable tho!!! and the remote is kinda crap!), and will do ya until you decide you want to go the HD/BD way, theres no point spending more money if you will be going the HD soon. the only other one id buy in that price range would be the pioneer 696, but i wasnt able to see it in action and couldnt find it localy, plus there were more positive reviews about the sony for slight better PQ, but thats debatable i guess, either way, both would suit you nicely. I bought it to use until teh HD players become more afordable and to see what will happen with regards to who will win and wich format the rental company will start to carry etc. If nothing happends in 6months time, i will probably buy both/or dual player as you'll most likely be able to buy both players for teh price what ONE is now, or close enough.
100% Posted May 7, 2007 Author Posted May 7, 2007 thanks jimbo, my first question, is there the old style out put for 5.1 (all 6 plugs on the back L,R,C,S,SL,SR?) because i saw the back of it on the us web site and they weren't there?? second, if ther are there do they use the same L and R as the normal sterio output?? and finaly how have you found it as a whole?? remote.. easy of use... and how much can you change with the menu?? thanks for your time...
attilathepun Posted May 8, 2007 Posted May 8, 2007 I bought the Sony on the weekend - wow. I can't believe it took me this long to get an upscaling player. The difference, whilst not quite Blu-ray noticeable, is still significant. Best $180 I have spent in a long time. Sorry, I can't answer your audio question as I am running sound and picture through the HDMI cable. Remote feels very cheapo, apart from that it has been very easy to use. Menu is adequate for what I wanted to change (mostly audio options) - what sort of things were you after?
KOAZ Posted May 8, 2007 Posted May 8, 2007 thanks jimbo, my first question, is there the old style out put for 5.1 (all 6 plugs on the back L,R,C,S,SL,SR?) because i saw the back of it on the us web site and they weren't there?? second, if ther are there do they use the same L and R as the normal sterio output?? and finaly how have you found it as a whole?? remote.. easy of use... and how much can you change with the menu??thanks for your time... In Short: Pioneer 696 - YES - There the old style out put for 5.1 (all 6 plugs on the back L,R,C,S,SL,SR?) Sony DVPNS76H - NO - There is not the old style out put for 5.1 (all 6 plugs on the back L,R,C,S,SL,SR?) Can some one also confirm is their DD & DTS Decoding on the Pio 696 ?
hired goon Posted May 8, 2007 Posted May 8, 2007 G'day, I may be in the market for a similarly priced upscaling DVD player, so the recommendations above are beaut. But of the players mentioned above, is there any difference in picture quality between HDMI and component output? My TV has both HDMI and component inputs, but for various reasons I may use component instead of HDMI, and I'd like to know if any particular model above falls short in this area. --Geoff
100% Posted May 8, 2007 Author Posted May 8, 2007 well that stuffs me, Because i actually brought the poineer on the weekend set it all up and it is a very good pic quality, the remote is a little cheap, but all works fine. Then i did a little more reading on the sony and decided i liked the sound of that and was thinking about changiing it but will i guess im not going to now.. because i need the old 5.1 out put for my amp.
