Hey all.

I have an older Fujitsu PDS4242 1024x1024 plasma screen. I understand that these screens interlace the image rather than use progressive scan. Based on what I have been reading on AVS, progressive of the same resolution is likely to handle movement in an image better than interlaced, with less jaggies on straight lines. I have a Toshiba HD-XE1 on order which should output anything up to 1080p. Assuming, of course that I can get the HDMI-DVI to work!! Can you tell me what you think is likely to give the better image going to an ALIS screen, 720p (which, if I have it right, the ALIS will convert to interlaced) or 1080i? I know that I could just wait and see for myself, but as the wait seems to be stretching out, and I have been spending some thinking time on this issue, thought I would raise it here.

Regards,

Allan

Your assumption that interlaced display handles motion worse then progressive is not usually correct, other factors normally dominate.

CRT TV’s normally run interlaced (576i, 1080i) and have better motion portrayal then any digital progressive display.

I would expect that you would be better of using 1080i input, but it very hurts to try other options.

That article is discussing true interlaced video compared to progressive video. It is not relevant to displays.

The negatives of interlaced video are also exaggerated, as modern deinterlacing systems can eliminate or significantly reduce the problems to the point where true 1080i 50/60 video can often look easily as good as 1080p 24 and has much better motion.

Happy to go off topic, particularly with a subject so near and dear to my heart daywalker. The guitar is custom made by Charles Cilia, a Sydney luthier. It's a cross between a Les Paul Junior and a PRS body shape, mahogany with about an inch of carved quilt maple on top. Neck is flame maple, headstock is birds-eye with a rosewood fingerboard. Pickups are Seymour Duncans, '59 in the neck and JB in the bridge - coil splitting with push-pull controls. Designed to my specs - usually preferring heavy blues rock tones (think Gary Moore), but also like to get a bit funky with a bright single coil clean tone (think play that funky music white boy - although I think that was a humbucker).

There is a better shot in this avatar:

It is very similar to the guitar Charles made for Sydney Jazz player Albert Calvo (although mine is a solid body): Click on the Cilia guitar at this web page:

I've been playing off and on for about 20 years, but usually in blocks as something always comes along to interrupt. At the moment I am lucky to pick it up once a week to give my son some lessons as I am studying for a masters. Haven't played in a band since uni many years ago, and then, not seriously. Just play for myself when I get the chance. I use a heavily modified Fender Blues Junior (which has a lovely clean tone at sensible volume) with MI-Audio pedals for distortion and a range of analogue effect pedals. Also plug into computer with a Line 6 POD for the recording. How about you?

Regards,

Allan
