yamapro Posted May 3, 2007 Posted May 3, 2007 Projector...Check Screen... Check (sort of - half built and to be finished on the weekend) AM Lens...Check (I'm hoping Mark has sent it off already) OK so now that the hardware side of my HT is sorted (Complemented by a Marantz AVR courtesy of Yorac) i have the serious decisions to make Basically it looks like I have a busy weekend ahead of me preparing the system, finishing the scrren, installing the lens etc and putting the finishing touches on Cinema le Yamapro and then of course driving the missus crazy with setup refinements and callibration But then i have a massive dillema. Just what is the best Movie to debut a Scope Screen with? It should be a full house even and worthy of the finest cinematic goodness to grace this planet But then again needs to have some general appeal... So guys i put it to you, just what is the Best 2.37:1 Movie out there that ties in great cinematography with a reasonable script, top shelf acting yada yada... what would you play on opening night? Cheers, Alex

yamapro Posted May 3, 2007 Author Posted May 3, 2007 Hehehe should have known you'd reply first and with some search results Lyle Whilst that is a very comprehensive list of great TV shows and movies, i was hoping to generate some discussion specific to scope screen movies, which ones are the most impressive, favourites and the like. As well as finding out what other 'scopers have debuted with their set-ups. I was kind of hoping to generate some interesting discussion rather than filter thru 29 pages of thread that is only partially relevant. Thank you though, you certainly are King of the Search Cheers, Alex

c912039 Posted May 3, 2007 Posted May 3, 2007 Hey Yampro, how about playing a custom 'pre-show' presentation DVD to 'warm' up the lamp, before you put on that blockbuster movie. Ive made 2 for my setup already, and it gets quite a reaction. Cheers David

Just not sure what SW to use to chop a scene out of a movie and paste it together with another... Oh, and any of the LOTR movies are great for scope... Cheers, Chris

Cheers, Chris Hi Chris, Actually, the pre-show DVDs I have made, dont actually have any scenes chopped out of movies. They consists of an Intro 'slide', an opening animation, and then a series of fun 'slides' to keep guests interested and amused, all choreographed to suitable muisc. This is followed by some trailers of movies that have yet to be screened in theatres in the US (Apple's Quicktime website is good for those), and then I close off the DVD disk with another custom made animation for my HT. When I was out demoing some new kit, I had thought about creating a compilation DVD of scenes - however, I had already purchased a number of official DTS demo disks, so I just ended up using those instead (less hassle, and much less time consuming) Regards

Even if you only watch the first 10 minutes - the opening of Star Wars 4 is always impressive on scope screen. It is interesting that this year that film will be 30 years old, and it can still hold its own - bring on the HD versions... Mark

It is interesting that this year that film will be 30 years old, and it can still hold its own - bring on the HD versions... Mark Having only ever seen Star wars on TV - its a treat to watch it on full size screen, un-interrupted by ads. I'm really enjoying rediscovering some of the older movies that I never saw at the cinema, in the way the film maker intended you to see them. Acting , script and cinematography were the tools used rather than special effects. I've been looking through the Academy awards lists to find movies which I've not had the chance to see before. Check out the scenery on "Deliverance" as they travel down the river - (might not be a good opener depending on the crowd). We recently watched "Open Range" and that went down well. I really enjoyed the sound and cinematography of that one. A few of Costner's films have wide sweeping panoramas which work well in scope.
Nigel-L Posted May 4, 2007 Posted May 4, 2007 Anything by Pixar Cars Incredibles Monsters Inc A Bugs Life Etc Certainly sets a standard that is hard to beat in terms of Pic & Sound quality. You can do this to satisfy the younger audience - before sending them to bed ahead of the main feature. If you haven't got kids - you'll enjoy them anyway.
sm0241 Posted May 4, 2007 Posted May 4, 2007 If you want to view a movie that demonstrates how a cinemascope movie should be shot and how good the cinemeascope format can look then The Thin Red Line is a good start. I'm not a big fan of the movie but I remember how well it's filmed and looks in the scope format. Thanks, Steve

oztheatre Posted May 5, 2007 Posted May 5, 2007 A personal fav of mine. Much better than Saving Private Ryan IMO. One I look forward to on BR. There are just so many scope films out there; Idependance day Fear and loathing in les vegas planet of the apes K Pax Panic room Reign of fire Day after tomorrow the entire matrix series Spiderman 1 and 2 all the bat mans all the LOTR Kill bill 1 and 2 Gladiator Fight club etc etc etc. Family oriented... perhaps LOTR, spiderman and batman.... how about 'The Prestige', not a bad show, michael caine was quite good in that.
sm0241 Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 ok.. Braveheart maybee... but Predator? *heh.. its the film snob in me* Predator will look like this (nevermind the rubbish pic quality) on your scope screen since it's a 1.85:1 aspect movie, this is what it looks like on my 100" 2.37:1 scope screen, it's dark but you can still see how it can't fill the outer edge on both sides of the screen - http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f123/sm0241/Predator.jpg
yamapro Posted May 7, 2007 Author Posted May 7, 2007 yeah that's kinda why i started this thread sm0241 Was hoping to get peoples fave/most impressive scope movies And some dicussion on it too. I guess Predator strikes out (such a shame...)
