Can anyone give me an idea if its worth picking up a PS3 as platfrom for a blu-ray player. I have noticed that the players I have seen thus far are quite expensive, the PS3 being only $1000 to me seems a better option. Also could anyone tell me if the PS3 is good quality through the Pana 42PV60A??

Ive wondered the same thing a Blu-Ray 1080p player that ive seen advertised is $1000.

The PS3 which supposedly does the same thing plus way way more can be had for sub $1000.

So what is the difference, cos surely a Blu-Ray player that is just that wouldnt be more than a PS3 if play back wise its the same?

I've got a PS3 and a 40" Samsung F7 LCD (1080p) and it's awesome. I got my PS3 mainly for movies

Samsung stand alone Bray is now $999 at most places.

I would investigate this product before purchase though.

I found the picture to be to 'soft' on the Samsung, the PS3's quality is awesome, that's why i went for a PS3 over the Samsung model

Thats what I suspected. So in essence depsite the PS3 being only about $20-$100 cheaper than a Blu-Ray only unit. It is essentially far far more value.

The samsung Blu-Ray is $1000 but despite the playback cant do as much as the PS3.

Even if you never intended on using the PS3 as a game console it would still be better as a Blu-Ray device.

Perhaps Sony are on a winner here. The PS3 can also be used to some extent as a basic media centre and at a Sony info night I went to, there will be impending firmware updates that will expand its functionality.

I've also read that the PS3's bluray player is actually very good.

I have seen the Samsung Bluray via the Panasonic 65 and the new Sharp 1080 LCD, and I was impressed with it.....also the Samsung upconverts DVD's to 1080.....I don't think the PS3 does.

It may not be relevant to this thread though.

There are 'talks' of a firmware update for upscaling DVD's (c'mon Sony DO IT) and also a 1080p/24 update (this is the one I REALLY want) but DVD's look great on the PS3

Also, on the PS3 you can put music/photo's/videos and surf the internet.

I was going to buy the Samsung, but I am VERY happy I got the PS3. I also got to connect my PS3 to the Samsung before I bought it (and tested the Samsung) via Belkins Pure/AV HDMI cable and the Sony won it.

Just my 2 cents
