Hi All,

Just got a brand spanking new Hitachi plasma (55 inch). Set it up last night and it was working perfectly. Worked all day today as well. This afternoon my son switches it off whilst he does some homework. Next time it is switched on - no picture. Picture hasn't come on since. Sound comes through fine however. I have checked all cables including DVD (RCA), Foxtel (RGB) and free to air (BNC - I think thats what the name is!) - I just bought an STB and was looking forward to using it tonight. All have sound and no picture. I have changed cables i.e. used difference RGB cable to no avail. Also not getting any menu so screen is effectively blank. If I leave it sit for a while I can turn on and get a flicker of white noise (1 sec) before going black again.

I fear that the panel has gone. Not bad for a 2 day old TV with about 6 hours total use. Any other ideas?

Cheers

BTW - bought from JB - will call either them or Hitachi tomorrow unless there is some hidden setting or sequence of buttons I need to push. I am not to pi55ed off as it is obviously under warranty. I could do without setting the whole thing up agin. These babies are heavy.

Sorry to hear that.

Not to worry though, if it's only 2 days old JB should just swap it over for another one.

Yeah should swap it for you, it's within the DOA period.

What is the DOA period?

i.e. how long.

I think it's about 2 weeks

call the JB store you got it from, it will be swapped over. its well within hitachi's DOA(Dead on Arrival) period, so no need to speak to hitachi

Does the power light flicker? or/and can you hear a feint ticking noise from within?

Sounds like a power supply issue, which most times blow when you start them up like that due to the sudden spike of power to components.

This is probably one of the most common major fault for a display.

You shoudlnt have much issues getting it replaced given that its only 2 days old.

Even if they repair it I wouldnt be too fussed its unlikely to happen again.

Light is fine and no abnormal noise - just no picture.

Currently on the merry-go-round waiting for a service technician or replacement. I will post what happens later but this is an interesting insight into the customer service of a couple of places. No need to blow a gasket yet though.

I suspect its the power supply, especially if you cant hear any of the internals powering up, despite the no picture.

This is relatively common as far as faults go, and for some useless info, if it was a fault that developed out of warranty. It would still be generally cheaper to get repaired than what you'd pay for extended warranty.

Keep us posted what the issue was and part at fault. I suspect a high tension transistor.
