Hussla Posted May 1, 2007 Posted May 1, 2007 Just saw at JB Hifi in Geelong they had some Soniq 42" SD plasmas' for $999 HDMI input and LG 8th Gen panels.
funkybits Posted May 2, 2007 Posted May 2, 2007 Looked Ok to me for a grand Latest JB Catalog says it's a 7th Generation Panel
GoForMoe Posted May 2, 2007 Posted May 2, 2007 I was in there on Monday and there was a nice big plasma smashed on the ground near all the other ones (and the pile of SD STBs). $999 sounds a bit too cheap for a plasma
unitedbythemoment Posted May 2, 2007 Posted May 2, 2007 We just brought one about 3 hours ago and ive just now got it all setup. It looks great as in the design, its clear picture and its sounds also great. cant see anything wrong with it. It's certainly better than the 63cm ordinary TV that we had previously

Just be a bit careful around here as if you don't buy a Fujitsu Plasma or spend $10,000 on your speakers then some posters around here can't believe that you will enjoy it !!! Have you go Foxtel ?? If so how does it look on your new Plasma ?

Yeah we've got foxtel, So far it looks fine, we had to buy a new cable (i think it was scart to componment, but im not 100% sure, i dont know much about cables). Ive heard people say that foxtel is bad on plasma's but i cant see the problem. Overall it certainly seems better than watching foxtel on the old CRT
beeHT Posted May 3, 2007 Posted May 3, 2007 Am interested in probably getting one of these for a second display, they seem like good value for money .... does anyone know if it has a computer input??
thejungle Posted May 3, 2007 Posted May 3, 2007 Hi! Which model Soniq are they selling for $999 - from their website (Soniq's) it's probably QV420PH or QV420PH/2 (although the specs look almost the same to me!). Also, and this is a stupid question I know but ... the resolution is listed at 852 x 480 and LCD screens are listed at 1366 x 768 so is the picture on LCDs sharper than Plasma. I was confused before today and now I'm getting more so!!! (I'm not taking over the thread as I'm asking about the JB product, and just added another query to it) Ernie

It also says you can connect the audio output of your PC to the unit PC AUDIO terminal using an appropriate cable (im quoting out of the manual) Hi!Which model Soniq are they selling for $999 - from their website (Soniq's) it's probably QV420PH or QV420PH/2 (although the specs look almost the same to me!). There are plenty of plasmas available with 1366 x 768, but this obviously isn't one of them.

nico6 Posted May 3, 2007 Posted May 3, 2007 ...$999 sounds a bit too cheap for a plasma That's what they said when Soniq was the first plasma under $2000 (Sept '05). Now it's first under $1000. How low can they go?

(I'm not taking over the thread as I'm asking about the JB product, and just added another query to it) Ernie This is a Standard digital TV.....by design it's good for FTA/DVD/FOXTEL.....but next to useless for HDTV/PS3/PC. 1366X768 can be considered as a 720p HDTV. LCD's are sharper by virtue of pixels and pixel formation. IMO, most of the affordable LCD HDTV's of 2006 are junk{with the exception of 26in LCD TV, but then, only as a PC monitor}. Wanna waste some money????....... buy a modern TV without doing much research.

digitalj Posted May 3, 2007 Posted May 3, 2007 Saw it today at JB HI-FI, They had an upscaling DVD Player connected to it via HDMI at (They said SD Resolution), I think they mean 576p. 1. what a waste of HDMI cable; 2. What a waste of an Up-scaling DVD Player. I also noticed their Blu-ray demonstration was on a 768p TV, that's a really poor demonstration of what it's capable of.
Quelch Posted May 3, 2007 Posted May 3, 2007 Would this model plasma be subject to the burn-in problem? I mean when a channel watermark such as ABC gets burned in permanently And then another channel watermark gets burned on top of it etc They can never be removed !

Wanna waste some money????....... buy a modern TV without doing much research. A very true statement. Must be a lot of people sitting at home watching their cheap LCD TV and in denial it's actually producing a worse picture for DVDs than their old CRT. I'm gonna stick my neck out here - the worst thing with the present TV market, IMHO, is there's no "middle ground" to find a decent picture quality in a television. Maybe (and a big maybe), cheaper plasmas provide a more reasonable option for people. When DVD entered the market, before thin flat TV panels, people could lash out $1000 on a CRT and expect a reasonable quality picture for their dollars. Now with the advent of the new TV panels, you either have to spend upwards of $4000 for something reasonable in a plasma or LCD, or the alternative is to hunt around for an almost extinct widescreen CRT. Let's be honest - a reasonable 76cm WS CRT for $1K is going to show a DVD movie much better than a cheap LCD panel for the same price, and I dare to say, just about any LCD under $2K! But as we know, people see the disadvantages of a large widescreen CRT in their bulk and screen size limit - and they're just plain un-sexy! (but the picture quality is still there). So people want, or are coerced into, the nice thin panel instead. Regardless of PQ. Despite what most that frequent this forum think, the average middle class family can only afford a $1000 at best, and those families make up the majority of the consumer market. At Westfield recently, I saw quite a few people snapping up an AWA LCD TV that was on special for $999. Suckers all of them. Unless they intended it for home PC use, they all think they're getting an upgrade in picture quality and DVD viewing I'm sure. However there's just no reasonable alternatives these days for a $1000 TV. Maybe the options are getting better with cheaper plasmas, I dunno. But in my opinion you either spend a massive amount of hard earned bucks, or you pay less to get lemons, much different to 10 years ago. I'd hazard a guess there must a growing number of dissatisfied flat panel TV owners at present. Then again, if you're happy with the picture then that's all that matters.
nico6 Posted May 4, 2007 Posted May 4, 2007 Would this model plasma be subject to the burn-in problem? I mean when a channel watermark such as ABC gets burned in permanently And then another channel watermark gets burned on top of it etc They can never be removed ! You could probably get a good idea of this by researching burn-in issues with the latest LG plasmas, because this one has an LG panel. (The original Soniq 42" had a Samsung panel, and can get "image retention" which dissappears after some normal viewing (i.e. this is not permanent burn-in))
PanaSung Posted May 4, 2007 Posted May 4, 2007 A very true statement. Must be a lot of people sitting at home watching their cheap LCD TV and in denial it's actually producing a worse picture for DVDs than their old CRT. Just for the record, I'm not knocking this particular TV.....it might be okay for SDTV, and let's not forget about it's size and widescreen. I was responding to the guy who clearly knew very little about the HDTV world, and was trying to impress upon him the risk of buying any old "thang". You know what, the only real problem with the latest HDTV's is how they handle Foxtel and PS3/360....they do everything else okay-excellent. I saw Samsung selling a upscaling DVD player for $180....also many of the Hdisc drive DVD recorders also upscale to 1080 over HDMI......so our problem remains Foxtel, especially when the content one normally watches is on the sports channels. A SP VHS recording of the Matrix via Foxtel was excellent on my 13 yr old 51cm CRT, however the broadcast quality of the World Cup cricket was close to woeful....I could only imagine what it'd look like on a large hi-res LCD......eeekkkk.
BribieG Posted May 5, 2007 Posted May 5, 2007 qtr73 is dead right about there being no middle ground, although having been in the market for 18months now since buying a good quality LCD I have seen the "middle ground" drop to around 2k. You can now get 40 inch good brand LCDs for around that price, Bravias and Vieras for example and they look brilliant displaying SD (which lets face it is most of our viewing, still). Our set was listed at over 4k, we got it for 3800 and could replace it today for 2400. I suspect the "middle ground" will shortly follow the plasmas and get within range of the 1k buyer. The other thing to be aware of is that what you see in the stores is woeful compared to a flat panel actually set up properly in the lounge room with a decent signal and all the options 'tweaked'. Same goes for the upscaling DVD players which have n options where n is a huge and bewildering number (warm or cool, theatre sound or church sound, 576, 720p or 1080i, WTF!!) I would never buy from JB or Kmart - go to a place where people with some tech nous have done a reasonable job of displaying the units, like WOW sight and sound in Queensland, or even the GGs.
gtr73 Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 This is becoming a good discussion, some real good points about buying a new TV in these days. Indeed signal quality is a big factor and as PanaSung points out with the Cricket World Cup broadcast, even pay TV can present a woeful picture (I was a bit surprised about that, not a good promotion for people to switch to Foxtel for sport!) It's true, the prices are slowly coming down to get a half decent TV for your dollar. Maybe with cheaper plasmas we'll get that more so. I guess I find the marketing a bit insideous regarding the flat panels - just their appearance alone is enticing to customers being that they're big, flat and thin, and I think some retailers play on that aspect and sidestep the actual reason for having a TV - watching motion picture. What I find amazing is that places like K-Mart, Big W, Target have a dozen flat panels running signal off the one SD box or DVD player, the picture looks crap on most screens, and some people still think the flat panels look amazing. The best advice I could give to people looking at a $999 plasma or cheaper flat panel is take a DVD of a movie with a lot of CGI and fast moving action (opening scene of Star Wars Ep III is ideal), ask the store assistant to play a scene using the one DVD player hooked up to the cheap TV, try this on a few different panels including the $4000+ TV's, and see for yourself the difference in PQ. Then if you're still happy with the PQ on the $999 plasma, go for it!

wheelz Posted May 8, 2007 Posted May 8, 2007 I saw this panel the other day playing an animated movie (which should look great) but it was shocking all the edges and even straight lines were jagged and very blocky.
