Aven Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 I finally got around to seeing a blue ray setup at Harvey Norman. The first setup was on what looked like a massive "60 plasma viewing 50 first dates. I really wasn't overly impressed with the resolution. I then had a look at a second setup with a smaller screen but using a demo blu ray disc. The resolution left me speechless. The footage must have been shot on a HD camera. It was just stunning! I'd be interested now is see a comparative demo of HD-DVD. Not sure where to go for that.

You'll find little difference if any in terms of PQ between HD & Blu ray.

Since you were viewing in a store you may have been a little close to such a big TV relative to how far you were from the smaller one. Also I just have a quick look at highdefdigest and they only gave 50 first dates 3 1/2 stars for the picture quality way back in June last so it probably isn't very good demo material. It was only the 2nd bluray movie they ever reviewed actually.

Aven Posted May 9, 2007 Author Posted May 9, 2007 Native film stock has a resolution of over 4K. It doesnt have to be filmed with HD cameras. Had a look at Casino Royale at the Samsung store. Wasn't that impressed and me thinks conversion from analog film to digital is still not perfect. I'd be interested to see what Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith would look like in a hd format. That was impressive on a digital projector at Fox studio.

I must differ in saying that Casino Royale is one of the best transfers i have seen to date. The color saturation was superb. Excellent depth. Oh and kick a** movie....

Excellent depth.Oh and kick a** movie.... Yeah, not sure how one could be unimpressed unless the panel was not calibrated well. I saw it on a samsung panel at JB and wasn't impressed but that was due to the panel itself. I personally am not impressed with those samsung 1080p panels, they seem to overemphasise grain and rather than giving a nice smoth 3d effect instead seem to have very harsh edges on moving items with a fair bit of alaising. Or it could be the samsung player as I have only seen the panels running with one of those.
Chesty Posted May 9, 2007 Posted May 9, 2007 I know where aven is coming from, go down to JB at the gate mate and it looks absolute crap on the set up they have it on, Pana BR and plasma, in fact they have an LG plasma with the Sammy BR player with Batman Begins on next to it that wipes the floor with the Pana, I was stupid enough to ask a staff member why and he told me it was the in store lighting, when I asked him about the fact that the LG was only 1080i he gave me one of those priceless looks that told me it was time to leave. Yeah i have learnt not to judge display set ups in stores. I can say its superb on my 46" x series thats for sure. I was truly blown away by it in fact...I just cant wait to upgrade my audio to see how that stacks up!

Hi Chesty, a little off topic I know, but go for the audio upgrade. I did a couple of months ago and was completely blown away (much more so than with the 50"Pio I got). I find myself listening to music more than I watch TV now!
LukeF1503559517 Posted May 9, 2007 Posted May 9, 2007 Saw a display last week at audio connection in Leichardt. They had a Pio 5000EX hooked up to a Pio blu-ray playing MI:3. Looked amazing, Im really looking forward to the 1080p plasma boom! if it happens

Supposedly it was suppose to be 1080p but the picture had that, I don't know how to explain it, mpeg look about it.
