"New research shows that many people risk dying from embarrassment because they will not call for an ambulance if they think they are having a heart attack.

A Newspoll commissioned by the Heart Foundation shows that 61 per cent of Australians would not call for an ambulance if they were experiencing heart attack warning signs.

Foundation chief executive Tony Thirwell stresses that ambulance officers will not make people feel silly if they call 000 and it turns out to be nothing serious.

"They [ambulance officers] worry that people just don't ring because they think they are wasting the ambulance's time or they get embarrassed," he said.

"If you have a symptom and you think it's a heart attack you should ring triple zero.

"If it happens it's not a heart attack, well the ambulance is more than happy to patch you up and give you some tablets for indigestion or whatever it might be."

Been there - done that

One of the benefits of getting very early help in these circumstances is that the damage to the heart that is a heart attack, can often be minimised or even completely repaired.

It's not just a question of survival in the short term it can also be a better "rest of your life"

If you have the symptoms get help - fast

glad your still here aloy

Us blokes can tend to ignore symptoms. :D

I saw a segment about this on the news last night, gave the usual symptoms, chest pain; pain down left arm; nausea etc.

Nausea is a bit of a worry, how do you tell that the difference between nausea from heart attack or something else? Can you get a symptom of nausea only when suffering a heart attack?

The difference between nausea with a heart attack and all other types of nausea is that nausea with a heart attack is usually accompanied by death.

Yes that's a real problem - I had been a long time reflux pain sufferer and I thought my heart attack was a severe case of reflux.

In hindsight it was different and there were other symptoms - but because reflux had been an on going problem I thought that was what it was.

But the main point is - get help anyway - if it turned out to be only reflux - OK - but if it was a heart attack - early detection, as with most issues, gets you better chances of recovery - don't worry about the embarrassment. :P

I'd think that this is becoming less of a problem, and will continue to do so!

Why?

Because people are becoming more selfish and self-centered, which usually is not a good thing, but just might save their lives in this case.

Now before you arc up with "Oh, Santa, you misanthrope! You need to put the pink shades on for a while!" :P

All I'm saying is, there was a certain Australian/British attitude of soldiering on, regardless of the signs, not wanting to trouble anyone ... not just in this situation, but in general. I know I've been guilty of it, as have many people I know.

However, this attitude is waning fast in the current "Generation Me!" centered society.

BTW: Yeah, we're all please you survived your own little "Packer moment", Al! :D

You may well be right about the "Me" bit - then again it's the "Me" folks who do a lot of the talking, you can't help hearing them - could well be that the"silent" folks are just the same as ever.

To share in your misanthropy - with your permission of course:

Those Ipod toting "I'm getting my exercise, don't try to make eye contact with me, this is my space" folks are very firmly fixed in their centre :D

Better not say this too loud or he'll get ideas, but ...

What are the chances JWH gets his son to insert a message into all downloaded songs.

So that the joggers happily listening along, get the surprise of their lives:

Last thing I remember, I was

Running for the door

I had to find the passage back

To the place I was before

Relax, said the night man,

We are programmed to receive.

You can checkout any time you like,

But you can never leave!

Urrr, urr, G'day, This is your leader,

I'd like you to vote for me,

I promise I'll stop lying,

I'm the best lil' Aussie bleeder!

:P:P:P:P

...and the ambos are never out of work!
