Is that actually a LAW or does it change from vendor to vendor and extended warranty to extended warranty?

I'm pretty sure it's the law.

I don't know about extended warranty but my experience with manufacturer's warranty was pretty unsatisfactory to say the least. You may have better luck with extended warranty or worse, I don't know.

It seems ridiculous that a major manufacturer of a supposedly premium quality high cost item would refuse to replace it when it is anything less than perfect, except through mis-use within the warranty period. I always keep these tales of warranty woe in mind when shopping for budget blowing gear. To show Sony up, my first plasma was a very nice 42" HD Humax was a bit an unknown in the reliability and warranty departments. As luck would have it, it had a centre pixel stuck on red - not nice, effectively invisible but I knew it was there. Humax answered my call immediately with over-the-phone instructions on how to bring up the factory menu, resets and screen tests. Didn't fix it, but within a couple of days it was swapped free of charge delivered from Sydney to Adelaide.

Why can't all manufacturers be as supportive? Sony was once my brand of choice for decades, and a house full of electronics proved it, but now it's my last. There was no lesson learnt in the Beta/VHS wars since they still had the narrow minded attitude to other formats by providing slots only for exclusive/expensive MemorySticks in their camera, laptop and TV gear, at least until recently. That knocked them off my widescreen TV, notebook and camera shopping list. I bought other brands so my existing SD cards weren't wasted and Sony missed out on maybe $9000 worth of sales. Sony have just gotten too damn greedy.

well i think personally, items in similar condition should only contain televisions that are less than 2 months old. I probably had less than 100 hours on this TV. any ways if it comes to replacement, that will be somewhat great anyways.

Also to the person that wrote about merchantable quality" test, would you know where i could find some more information on this. Also extended warranty does not say anything about dead pixels, hence i do not know if that would have helped or not

This is a pretty good summary:

Just get the retailer you purchased it off to sort it out for you.

They can always pass it off to Sony as store stock and get a credit on it. You really need to kick up a fuss though.

I wouldn't put up with any dead pixels if I'd laid down that sort of cash on a panel!

Well anyways, this is where iam at now,

Sony have escalated the case to a officer, who will be ringing me apparently, it has been 3 weeks since the complaint was made and the inspection done. I assume it will be another 2 weeks before the matter was sorted out. Harvey Norman want to see a copy of the report (to help with me with the claim) that was made during the inspection. however the inspection agency will not fax this over to me.

Sony have said that they will try and repair the pixels first (God knows how! is this possible?) and then advise further action.

Edit - Just recieved the fax now .. +1 to telefix

Ok another update ...

case manager said, they will send another guy out to have a look at the pixels, and if confirmed that there are two adjacent, they will replace panel. Guy comes in takes a gazillion photos of the pixels, and then rips off the back panel to get the serial number of the LCD panel itself. Ofcourse this not possible to see.. and there is some conversation about taking panel to service centre, to which i say a straight NO. Guy repeatedly rubs the pixels with his hands to co erce them into beocming alright, but nothign happens.

He says he will contact sony n come back. He calls again in the evening, for another site visit tommorrow morning, to check with a MAGNIFYING GLASS, if there are indeed two of them.

honestly i dont even have time to say anything more about this circus... this is f****** P****** me of

Well i do not know if this is useful for any one else, here is another update

techie comes with a magnifying glass in the morning, one of those big ones, has a big look at the pixels and says there is only 1 dead one, and the other is miscoloured. i do not know what he is talking bout as at tht magnification all i see is red, green n blue. anyways i ask him to look at it without the magnifying glass and tell me honeslty if he thinks there is only one. it is obvious to me that he wants to see only 1. I have a gazillion fingerprints all over the pixel area where he has tried to rub them in a million times, in the hope that they will recover.

Anyways, he departs saying that some one high up from sony will come in and have a look and decide, i have had enough of him anyway.

the case manager calls me up, and gives me the information that when the techie had a look on monday itself he reported there was one. I said to her that is BS, as that only happened this morning (tuesday). Regardless of what this techie thinks, i tell her that I still have the fax of the initial report where the techie has stated 2 mis coloured pixels side by side. This puts her of suddenly, and she says she will call me back after speaking to the techie. I suspect that the **** is going to hit the fan for him.

Anyways .. she does not call back, but the techie does sayign that finally, sony will replace the panel, and he needs to get into the back again to get serial numbers or what ever crap. i say again no, and that i want a new panel, as the original fault was reported within 5 weeks.

anways so i call the case manager back to give her my opinion, but she is unavaliable, and i am promised she will call me back soon.

what do you reckon guys, am i acceptable in requesting for a new panel, as opposed to getting it repaired ?

It can't be fixed

It can't be fixed

If Sony is anything like Sharp, they can't repair them.

My business does work for for the company where all the Sharp Aquios panels go that get the reject from customers. Mostly dead pixels warranty returns screens with 2 or 3 dead pixels on them. They auction them off.

For those looking at warranty claim with the Bavia X's have a read in the instruction manual as it states very clearly what is covered and for how long.

What will surprise most people is that how useless the extended warranty is, and everything that it doesn't cover.

Bottom line your warranty as most people understand is really only valid for 30days if there is a serious problem with the panel. In this time replacement or refund options are available as stated. After that time, as most people find out they get expidited to the muck around stage where repair becomes first priority even though repair will not fix most peoples issues. I wish I still had a copy of my manual so I could highlight the important parts so that you can see what I am talking about.

I feel for everyone going through the faulty panel headaches.

liveonimpulse, I would love to know what happened next with your LCD. Replacement or refurbished?

Have you done the finger trick by pressing on the pixels in question seemed to remember long time ago that worked for some

cheers laurie

Was it a permanent solution? Is it possible that this problem could return, & maybe not until the warranty expires?

I had a dead pixel on my old Bravia X. It had some clouding issues that I was getting swapped for, and the pixel just annoyed me for the week I still had it. I pushed on the screen very gently, but enough to somehow 'pop' the pixel into place. I have no real definition of what I did, but the pixel worked after that. I felt bad for doing it, in case of future problems. But the screen is gone, so no more worries for pixels.

I haven't seen any obvious dead pixels on my screen, but I don't want to look too close. My laptop also had no dead pixels. So I guess I've been somewhat lucky. My digital camera had a few though.
