Absolutely BM ;Not the first time they have matrix encoded a back surround channel into the standard 5.1. The first Harry Potter movie was broadcast as dd ex as well; emulating the dvd :D

Amazing PQ. - especially the cityscapes, it was like being at Greater Union! (Gold Class, including the wine!)

Probably not the correct forum to ask this, but seeing as this thread is live:

I have an ageing Sharp 5.1 setup that I've never bothered connecting to my LCD as the TV sound is quite nice. It's a monster to set up with kilometres of cable which looks awful in our current lounge room. Thought I would set it up as a trial and if it makes a big difference might buy a new wireless unit. Seeing as we have some sound gurus on the forum here:

What is the diff. between 5.1 and 6.1. Is it just the case that the centre speaker of 5.1 has been replaced by a Left and Right speaker at the front? Is there much difference in the sound experience?

How do wireless units work - do you have to physically put batteries into them or do you periodically recharge them directly like my dust-buster that lives in the laundry?

hi bribie check the htfaq sticky via link in my sig. many answers there.

yes well worth hooking up a 5.1 setup if you have one. for both dvd and the odd 5.1 telecast we get. plus you could even jsut do a plain surround decode of the stereo telecast we get which gives some nice effect.

6.1 basically has an additional rear centre, typically on a back wall in between the two side surrounds.

wireless units are infact not true-lly wireless. still have to get power to them so either need a power point at each speaker and run power to each or they need batteries which is only ever good for tiny little speakers and can get expensive and a pain if hae to recharge.

my thoughts are wireless is a waste of time. if you are going to be running power to each speaker you might as well run speaker cable.

and you dont need to run ugly cables everywhere. check some system pics from people in the attachments area. alternatively post some pics of your room and people could provide you some suggestions what best to do.

Hi Bribie, like Al said, wireless is a waste of time at the current level of technology we have right now.... depending on your amp, even with only the 3 front speakers, it may be able to 'ghost' the back surrounds by having more information ie: 5.1 EX ... I only have 5.2 speakers, but the amp matrix the sound for the centre rear speaker... its seamless.....

I'm keeping the spidey as the show recording on FTA for now... replacing sixth sense.....

I've got a folder named 'Keep' where I store the best recordings... so far the channel 7 HD loop, gateway, 15 mins of Letterman Show, 10 minutes of HD footy & Spidey ... fantastic stuff...

Bear in mind that they actually DIDN'T "broadcast in EX" - they simply set the correct flag in the Dolby Digital stream (or the tape did it for them, more likely). If they hadn't, you still could have turned on EX manually and gotten exactly the same result, just as you can with any EX movie on TV (as long as they broadcast 5.1 audio) or DVD that was mixed for EX.

I'm new to this forum, new to audio visual, hi-fi etc, so please excuse my ignorance, or simple questions!

We recorded spiderman on to the hard-drive of our Panasonic DMREX85 DVD player--watched the recorded movie last night-no problem with the picture, & none really with the sound either, but the sound "logo" on our Z9 Amp showed we were only receiving a 2 channel signal from the rcording, although the amp still played through the surround sound system. I would have thought if the movie was 5:1, then that is what would show on the amp, or maybe because I was viewing a recording then the DVD player cannot reproduce 5:1 on the hard drive--Any views?

Cheers, GTO.

5.1 sound is only broadcast on the HD channels - most likely the panasonic is an SD-only DVD recorder/player... there are no DVD/HDD recorders right now which have a HD tuner in-built. SInce DVD only records in SD anyway, the argument goes, to have at best a digital SD tuner only.
