djOS Posted April 27, 2007 Posted April 27, 2007 Firmware Update Version: 2.2 Applicable Models: HD-XA1, HD-A1 and HD-D1. Overview: This firmware update addresses certain HDMI/DVI related problems introduced in FW v2.1. How to obtain and install the firmware update: If you have broadband internet service, you may obtain the firmware update over the internet using the Ethernet port on the back of your HD DVD Player. There are instructions for configuring the Ethernet port on pages 44-45 of the owner's manual. Page 57 of the owner's manual describes how to download the firmware update. Here is an overview of the process: * BEFORE BEGINNING THE FIRMWARE UPDATE PROCESS, BE SURE TO REMOVE ANY DISCS FROM YOUR HD DVD PLAYER. * Please configure the Ethernet port. You may need to turn on DHCP and DNS. Page 45 of the user manual explains how to do this. * After you have configured the Ethernet port, follow the directions on page 57 to check for a firmware update. * If a firmware update is available for your player, it will take about 20 minutes to download and install. Once the firmware update download process has finished, the player's power will automatically switch off. You must wait until this process has finished. * DO NOT UNPLUG, TURN OFF, OR USE ANY OTHER FEATURE OF YOUR PLAYER DURING THE FIRMWARE UPDATE PROCESS. Doing so will cause the writing of the firmware update to the player to be halted and the player may no longer operate properly. If the player stops working, please contact Toshiba Customer Solutions at (800) 319-6684. * If no firmware update is available, the player will quickly exit the update process. * Please refer to your owner's manual for additional details. If you do not have an Ethernet-based broadband connection for your player or prefer not to use one, you may contact Toshiba Customer Solutions and request that a firmware update disc be sent by mail. * You can update the firmware using this update disc by following the instructions provided with the disc. Please note that if you sent Toshiba the Firmware Update Request card included with your player, you will receive an update disc by mail from Toshiba as soon as it becomes available. Im in the process of updating to v2.2 now so I'll let you folk know how it goes. Sofar there have been many reports on AVS of this actually fixing players that stopped working with DVI equipped displays using FW v2.1. Btw, please dont be tools and get this FW Update thread thread closed too!
djOS Posted April 27, 2007 Author Posted April 27, 2007 Looks like some ppl are noticing speed improvements also: Here are my load times with 2.1 and 2.2 on a A1. I did these measurements right before updating.Boot up time with no disc in drive Timed from when I pushed the power button to when it displayed "No Disc" on my projector 2.1: 54 seconds 2.2: 40 seconds (!) Disc Load time - Chronicles of Riddick This is after the player has booted up and is displaying a "no disc" screen. Timed from when the tray fully inserted until I saw the first frame of the universal logo 2.1: 1 minute, 11 seconds 2.2: 1 minute, 9 seconds So for me disc load times are the same but the player itself booting up without a disc is quicker. I forgot to measure powering on with a disc already in the player since I've made a habit out of ejecting any discs before I power down.
bigblue Posted April 28, 2007 Posted April 28, 2007 Looks like some ppl are noticing speed improvements also: one word - brilliant!
djOS Posted April 28, 2007 Author Posted April 28, 2007 Yeah it's good to see Toshiba really stepping up to the plate and supporting Gen1 Early adopters! PS. at 95% right now.
djOS Posted April 28, 2007 Author Posted April 28, 2007 All done , I just powered on and ran a few quick tests and: from off to 100% on = 45 Seconds (about 10sec quicker than before) from tray close to HD DVD demo on screen for Aeon Flux = 60 Seconds flat (about the same) from full off to HD DVD demo on screen with Aeon Flux already in the tray = 1 min 35 Seconds (I dont normally do this so no idea of difference) All up, looking good folks! Signal Path: HD-A1 HDMI -> Yamaha HDMI AVR -> Gefen 2x2 HDMI Switch -> NEC 42" DVI-D Plasma & Sanyo Z5 HDMI Projector.
djOS Posted April 28, 2007 Author Posted April 28, 2007 C'mon the rest of you HD DVD A1 Series Owners, take the plunge and post your results!
djOS Posted April 28, 2007 Author Posted April 28, 2007 I just discovered another bonus of v2.2; HD DVD menu Systems created in Ulead DVD MovieFactory now work - previously they would result in a loss of HDMI connection to both my plasma and projector!

AndrewW Posted April 28, 2007 Posted April 28, 2007 So how'd it go Andrew? Didn't get a chance last night, will try today. I sort of forgot that I'm in the middle of finally finishing off the renovation of the HT room, and everything is covered in dropsheets to keep the plaster dust and paint off Andrew.

Hydrology Posted April 28, 2007 Posted April 28, 2007 In no rush so will probably do this on Wedneday arvo when I have a little additional "spare" time.
djOS Posted April 29, 2007 Author Posted April 29, 2007 In no rush so will probably do this on Wedneday arvo when I have a little additional "spare" time. I must admit that im rather looking forward to building my "New HT" when I get back to Adelaide. Because I'll be renting for awhile (prolly build/buy off plan), Im just going to keep it simple initially with a 50" HD Plasma, Toshy HD-XE1, HDMI AVR (YTD), Quad Tuner MediaCenter & Aussie PS3. Once I move into my new place I'll add a JVC HD1 and a US Spec BluRay Player.
franin Posted April 29, 2007 Posted April 29, 2007 finally finished the upgrade(took awhile), watching a movie tonight to give it's test.
djOS Posted April 29, 2007 Author Posted April 29, 2007 finally finished the upgrade(took awhile), watching a movie tonight to give it's test. Cool, yeah v2.2 took around an hour to complete vs about 45mins for v2.1.

Maverick Posted May 3, 2007 Posted May 3, 2007 For those of you that actually know how to use a computer  , the ISO can be DL'd from HERE! PS. It is 71.5Mb Thanks mate, do you know how reliable this iso is? Last time I downloaded an iso for the toshie it had been doctored to make it fail and brick the player, obviously someone who had a beef with HD-DVD. I found out by chance before I used it and downloaded the good iso image from another source.

That is just wrong. Some people really need to get a life, and that guy should be hung upside down by his nuts and beaten with a stick. Andrew.
Maverick Posted May 3, 2007 Posted May 3, 2007 That is just wrong. Some people really need to get a life, and that guy should be hung upside down by his nuts and beaten with a stick. Andrew. Yes it is wrong but some people would have sold their mother to see HD-DVD fail at that time. Don't think it is as bad now as it was then but it is a chance you have to take sometimes. I am just not willing to use an iso from an unknown source without some kind of verification. It is probably legit and I have made a firmware disc from it but I just cannot bring myself to put it in my player. I think I will wait for the Toshie firmware disc to arrive from the US and use it instead.
