100% Posted April 26, 2007 Posted April 26, 2007 Ok so here it is; Maybe im just a tight a## but im getting very sick of coming home to see my room mate kicked back infront of the home theatre !! So it's my house and all my h/t and i have asked him to not use it, or atleast ask if he wants to.(i dont think ive ever said no if he's asked) But last night i went to the movies with my girl friend which he knew i was doing, but had no idea of what time or anything so when we came back in the door at about 8.30pm SPRUNG... the look on his face priceless! The thing that really gets to me is he'll sit done and think hhmmm it needs to be focused or more colour or just whatever and start fiddiling with my settings so my question is how can i control or limit he's use perticualy when im not home?? (as i have a run of late night at work coming up) ive tried taking the remotes which just lead to more random button pushing, after i use it turn it all off let cool down the turn of at the switch. Any new ideas? It a benq w100 pj, and just a basic amp, dvd and set top box. it's mostly the projector im worried about Any ideas....? thank you, rave over !!! deep breaths wooosa wooosa
Gutty Posted April 27, 2007 Posted April 27, 2007 I have the same deal, my house, my gear.... only the new house mate doesn't fiddle. The last one however.... First i come home and find him "into it" on my lounge. Well that simply embarrised him so much i didn't want to take any action. But a few weeks later i see him poking his finger into my new LCD screen.... Kicked him out.. no if or buts. He had been told not to touch it...yet just had to. If it were me in your shoes, i'd lay down the law. "Leave it alone, or find somewhere else to live" Best of luck
anotherdavid Posted April 27, 2007 Posted April 27, 2007 does your equipment have security codes/ child lock sort of things? Maybe they will stop him....
100% Posted April 27, 2007 Author Posted April 27, 2007 i cant find such a lock but am i just missing it?? the amp wont forsure but maybe the projector?? and one got the w100 and know if there is a lock? or im thinking this might be one of those rare times where voilence is the answer... a swift kick to the bum maybe....................
Skid_MacMarx Posted April 27, 2007 Posted April 27, 2007 time for your girlfriend to become your new "house mate"
anotherdavid Posted April 27, 2007 Posted April 27, 2007 i cant find such a lock but am i just missing it?? the amp wont forsure but maybe the projector?? and one got the w100 and know if there is a lock? The projector won't but your sources may have parental locks on them (DVD Player, STB etc)
JoshH Posted April 27, 2007 Posted April 27, 2007 Somone posted this in their sig the other day There is no theory of evolution. Just a list of creatures Chuck Norris has allowed to live.Get Chuck onto your room mate Seriously though.. time for a new room mate or to buy a house.
Roderick Posted April 27, 2007 Posted April 27, 2007 You could buy one of those radio-controlled wall plugs from Bunnings, Dick Smith, or Jaycar and arrange it so its hidden away. That way, nothing can be turned on without the remote for the switch. The ones from Jaycar can be mounted behind the wall plug -- hidden away in the wall! Rod

100% Posted April 27, 2007 Author Posted April 27, 2007 wow now ive got so many ideas, first i think ill look into the child lock on the dvd player but the remote power switch is sounding like a good idea coz then he cant use the rest of it as his personal cd player either, i like the ejector seat though, but i havent seen them in any catalog yet where can i get such a thing???
Roderick Posted April 27, 2007 Posted April 27, 2007 ... the remote power switch is sounding like a good idea coz then he cant use the rest of it as his personal cd player either ... Trouble is, '100%', he can always run an extension cord from another power point in the house . Probably will! Rod
100% Posted April 27, 2007 Author Posted April 27, 2007 LOL i like it.. im trying to look for these wall plugs on the jaycar website, any idead what there called? doing search's for remote wall switch and nothing is coming up any ideas? http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?I...mp;SUBCATID=898 is that it?
nightbreed Posted April 27, 2007 Posted April 27, 2007 I had the same prob many years back. My first "pro-Logic" system with Laser Disc player. I had it set up for 1 day, got home from work and it was all totally covered with VERY greasy finger prints. It's looked like he was finger painting on the damm thing! I found that pressing the A and B speaker button both to off worked a treat! There was so many buttons on the front panel he had no clue and just gave up

Yep, that's it! You'll need that and the remote. Happy to do your own 240-volt wiring? Incidentally, Bunnings also have the same stuff under the name of SwitchLink, imported by Nelson. Not selling well, so they're getting rid of it -- could get it real cheap, maybe? Rod PS: The one illustrated via you link to Jaycar is actually a dimmer, I think. A plain switch would be cheaper.
100% Posted April 27, 2007 Author Posted April 27, 2007 ok thanks well ill keep looking and a quick trip to bunnings will help to by the sound of it. reasonably happy to wire it are they hard? coz i could always ask my old man...
Gutty Posted April 27, 2007 Posted April 27, 2007 got home from work and it was all totally covered with VERY greasy finger prints. Grrrr....that's the one problem i have with my current renter, dirty fingers all over my Harmony remote
Roderick Posted April 27, 2007 Posted April 27, 2007 ok thanks well ill keep looking and a quick trip to bunnings will help to by the sound of it. reasonably happy to wire it are they hard? coz i could always ask my old man... I don't think they are difficult to wire up, but I've never done it myself. You probably need a neutral connection and active to go through them to the power point. The two rotary switches you see in the illustration are for setting the device code, and you teach the switch with the remote once the code is set (or is it the other way round). They should come with detailed instructions. Just remember to use belt and braces when isolating the power point from the mains. After you throw the breaker, test the power point with a multimeter, or one of those little buzzing voltage detectors, to make absolutely sure the power is off. As a last resort, you can use the back of your fingers to test for live wires! That way when your muscles violently contract, your hand closes away from the wire, not around it! Not all Bunnings stores have a complete range of this stuff in stock any more. You might have to hunt around, but there is a plain switch as well as that maroon-coloured dimmer with "Dim" printed on it. Rod
Foggy Posted April 27, 2007 Posted April 27, 2007 Take your interconnect for the video signal to your display with you. He's probably too cheap to go out and buy his own one to use when you're not there.
Black Dawg Down Posted April 27, 2007 Posted April 27, 2007 Take your interconnect for the video signal to your display with you. He's probably too cheap to go out and buy his own one to use when you're not there. Or take the tv's power cable with you, if you don't mind connecting and disconnecting it everyday. Other than that the only effective solution is to live alone. There's no guarantee if you kick him out that the new renter won't be as adventurous as him.
pasty Posted April 27, 2007 Posted April 27, 2007 Increase his rent or share of the rent for usage of the home theatre. So far my new house mate (who was a mate beforehand anyway) and I get along well. He can use my gear and watch foxtel etc when I'm not around, but he knows I have preference to everything when I want. Same goes with his Laptop and PC and with the internet. I pay the fox he pays the internet. He also has his own TV and stereo in the bedroom etc
