g12345567 Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 Ever since last weeks rain the signal quality of SBS has dropped to realy low, Below the level of the Government digital 44 cannels that usualy have the lowest signal levels. I am not sure what has happened. I tried deleting all the channels but when I rescan I can't get SBS anymore because the signal level is lower than that of the acceptable level for my set top box (topfield TF4000T) to pick up the channel. Just wondering if anybody has experienced a drop in signal levels or problems with SBS?

mtv Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 Have you checked the antenna connection and balun? Some older baluns are prone to water ingress.
«F1» Posted April 27, 2007 Posted April 27, 2007 (edited) I have no idea what a "balun" is. (I'm in a block of units) but I've noticed the same problem. Using a DVICO Fusion HDTV card on my PC and just downloaded the latest driver software, which I initially suspected of being responsible for kidnapping SBS. Edited April 27, 2007 by «F1»

A Bulan is the part of the antenna that the coaxial cable is connected to.
alanh Posted April 29, 2007 Posted April 29, 2007 g12345567, Firstly, do your neighbours have the same problem or the following problem? what happens if you watch SBS on an analog set from that antenna outlet? If the picture is covered in dots or there is many ghosts, then get the body corporate to get an antenna serviceperson in to fix the system. If not try another fly lead from the wall to the STB. Also read Get the Best Reception, Sydney and read the links. Particularly the apartment link. AlanH
FunkTrust Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 SBS is still stronger than D44 here in Beecroft. Sorry to go a bit off topic, but what channel is D44? Is it one of those community channels which broadcasts some really weird shows?
digitalj Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 Sorry to go a bit off topic, but what channel is D44? Is it one of those community channels which broadcasts some really weird shows? D44 is on UHF 35
alanh Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 Funktrust, D44 is the number shown on a set top box when channel 35 is tuned. It is a datacasting trial by the NSW government. It does not contain TV programs as such but is similar to the internet but one way. AlanH

digitalj Posted May 21, 2007 Posted May 21, 2007 Adam75, if you are wanting to start a new topic, you need to get your post count up to 5, but please do it here in one of the red text threads.

You didn't mention where you are, where you are receiving the signals from and what antenna you are using. From your description, I take it you are using a PC card, or USB tuner? If you are using a tiny antenna which is often supplied with those devices, that will be a major problem, so you will need to connect it to an external antenna, designed for the digital channels in your area. All Australian digital channels use a bandwidth of 7MHz.
rocksand Posted May 30, 2007 Posted May 30, 2007 i am using the small antenna they provided, it is an usb device, u got it all right ! And i live in western sydney 25km away from the city. Omg if its the case like u said, im doomed. My exeternal antenna plug is way too far from my bedroom (where my computer is). is there any alternative way to receive more channels? BTW my SBS channels (including HD and sbs radios) are really clear and stable by using that shitty antenna
mtv Posted May 30, 2007 Posted May 30, 2007 The best thing would be to have an additional outlet installed in your bedroom. You could try an indoor antenna eg: rabbits ears, however nothing beats a correctly installed roof-mounted antenna designed for the digital channels. The reason SBS will work better with the tiny antenna than other channels from the main TV transmitters in Sydney (and other Australian capital cities) is that SBS is on UHF and the ABC & all commercial channels are on VHF. UHF requires smaller antenna elements than VHF.
rocksand Posted May 31, 2007 Posted May 31, 2007 Sorry for the late reply, I really appreciate ur help! Thanks alot ! I guess I might have to put an extension on my outdoor antenna cable to my room. cheers~
steve89 Posted June 24, 2007 Posted June 24, 2007 I cannot get SBS at all now. I used get it very good signal
Rusty Juggler Posted June 24, 2007 Posted June 24, 2007 I cannot get SBS at all now. I used get it very good signal Steve, Before anyone here is able to advise you, you'll have to give some more details about your location and things like: -Do you have your own individual antenna or do you have a shared one (unit block, town house etc.)?-What type of antenna is used? Sometimes posting a picture of it may be very helpful).-Any amplifiers / splitters?-Which transmitter are you pointed towards?-How is your analogue reception of VHF and UHF channels? As a rule of thumb, if your analogue reception is satisfactory on the same (non shared) antenna you should have no trouble with digital reception of at least some of the channels, depending on the antenna though which may or may not have been designed for the entire digital spectrum. The catch is that some people call their analogue reception satisfactory where for the professional eye it clearly isn't. In such situations your digital reception is likely to suffer as well. Please post additional information and I'm sure you'll receive lots of suggestions. Regards Rusty
